Make Money Online Search Results Update

written by John Chow on March 29, 2007

Make Money!

make-money-keyword.png

Here is an updated on the results of my Make Money Online anchor text test. As you know, I have been trying to get on page one of Google for the search term “make money online.” I’m happy to report that as of today, I am now ranked number two for that term across every single Google server.

Even before locking the number two spot, being on page one offers some nice benefits. In my first update, I showed that make money online was the number two most used keywords to find this blog.

The above chart shows the keywords used to find this blog for the week of March 22 to 28. As you can see, make money online have taken over the number one spot from my name. Ranking for that term has also ranked me for “making money online” and “making money.” Together, all three key terms have sent me 746 visitors in one week. This number should increase as my number two spot on Google’s SERP takes hold. I believe ranking for this keyword will be worth at least 4,000 new visitors every month.

According to my Google AdWords control panel you would need to bid $1.75 to $2.62 per click in order to get into the top three sponsored ads spot of the Google SERP page for the term make money online. By getting on the organic results for free, I am saving some serious money. Even if I were paying for AdWords, I would not get the same level of traffic as being in the organic results since only 12% of Google users click the sponsored ads.

Now that I locked the make money online keyword, I’m going after make money on the Internet. I am currently at the top of page three for that term. It shouldn’t be too long before I hit page one. According to the Overture Keyword selector Tool, there were over 20,000 searches last month for make money on the Internet. Free feel to link to me with that term. :)

Someone would a sharp eye may noticed that 49 people came to my blog last week looking for “whores.” Thanks for visiting, but the only whores you’re going to find here are Google whores (and comment whores).

Well, I’m almost there when you search for “Efficient Market Hypothesis”. But I bet you get wayyyy more hits than I do :)

Life Training - Online March 29, 2007 at 12:14 pm

lol. I actually thought you were joking, but it IS a popular keyword.

John – congrats! You continue to be an inspiration.

lyndonmaxewell March 29, 2007 at 9:51 pm

Yea I guess the most important thing is to go for keywords that are popular/ most commonly typed in, and are related to your blog.

Thank you,

ilker March 29, 2007 at 12:20 pm

I’m number 1 when you search for “The Thinking Blog”

DanyO March 29, 2007 at 1:00 pm

but then, how many searches are there to that keyword?

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 4:23 pm

i suposed few, it’s not easy someone search for “the thinking blog”.

Loved that part of the “whores”

ilker March 29, 2007 at 7:30 pm

Really few I suppose :???:

Dave March 29, 2007 at 1:22 pm

Yeah, it’s not too hard to rank for trafficked terms. My blog ranks for a lot of them :)

ilker March 29, 2007 at 7:31 pm

Such as?

Dave March 29, 2007 at 8:38 pm

Crazy Web Entrepreneurs
Dave and Jay
Crazy Web Ideas

To name a few :)

lyndonmaxewell March 29, 2007 at 9:49 pm

Well those are not common terms that people will search for, so they are not that useful anyway.

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 9:54 pm

If you have a good group of “not that useful anyway” terms, that will do the same has a big term.
It’s the ranking power of lover phrases/keywords.

It’s like small $2 clients. Alot of them, make a company big (like hosting).

Marc March 30, 2007 at 5:26 am

Also known as the long tail which is where most websites get their traffic.

Dave March 30, 2007 at 7:08 am

Yes, those terms are useless, I said so before listing them…and no having a bunch of little terms does not add up to the big terms unless you have thousands of them. Trust me, we are ranked for a lot of other useless terms to, I just gave those as an example because I was asked.

A hosting company that has $2 clients is setting itself up for failure.

Dave March 30, 2007 at 10:28 am

Oops, I just realized I made a typo that would make this whole reply string confusing.

Originally I meant to say “I’m ranked for a lot of NON-trafficked terms” not trafficked ones.

My bad!

Adam Henningsen March 29, 2007 at 11:52 am

Go John, Go John, GO GO Go John. That is great news. Isn’t it amazing what you can achieve with so many people admiring you. Like I said earlier, I am shooting for “Hopeless Romantic” that should be fairly easy if I do enough articles and get some anchor text link back. Awesome Job keep up the greatness. You Evil Evil man!

ilker March 29, 2007 at 12:21 pm

Who are those people?

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 4:25 pm

What people?

ilker March 29, 2007 at 7:31 pm

“so many people admiring you” people

Abdul Aziz March 29, 2007 at 12:02 pm

Wow, this is simply amazing. Hope we too get a part of your success making money online!!

ilker March 29, 2007 at 12:19 pm

Marc March 29, 2007 at 6:34 pm

Come Ilker, you can’t tell me you’re not reaping some of the rewards ;)

ilker March 29, 2007 at 7:33 pm

Ummm.. I don’t know, maybe if I spend hours to write so many comments, then maybe!

Marc March 30, 2007 at 6:27 am

Well you have been… So?

Dave March 30, 2007 at 10:32 am

Being on the top commentator list, is helpful in terms of new readers to your own blog :)

lyndonmaxewell March 29, 2007 at 9:55 pm

Well, you have to do your own part in sourcing for some evil strategies for your own self. What may work for the big guys may not work for you as well.

StormVideographer March 29, 2007 at 12:06 pm

I’d love to be known as a Google whore one day. Too the 49 folks looking for whores… how surprised were you to find a Make Money Online blog! Disappointed?

ilker March 29, 2007 at 12:23 pm

8092 hits from Google is not bad, is it?

StormVideographer March 29, 2007 at 12:28 pm

Not bad at all!

ilker March 29, 2007 at 12:35 pm

Hmmm.. I got 580 organic hits from Google for these the most:

the thinking blog 39
calender 2007 :?: 14
calendar 2007 11
thethinkingblog 10
ilker yoldas 6
thinking blog 6
abby and brittany 6

haha.. I like that 666 in the end – evil!

How should I do SEO and what words should I choose, I don’t know!

Josh Rives March 29, 2007 at 12:57 pm

I would love that much from google

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 4:26 pm

for one month is bad, for one day, is very good :)

Marc March 29, 2007 at 6:46 pm

I think it’s for a week unless he changed the default parameter in Analytics.

ilker March 29, 2007 at 7:34 pm

It’s one week.

lyndonmaxewell March 29, 2007 at 9:58 pm

I guess the people who stumbled onto here from that search are totally disappointed.. And, disgusted.

Dave March 30, 2007 at 7:08 am

I’ll just have to settle for “comment whore” for now.

Mubin March 29, 2007 at 12:13 pm

I’m sure they were really pissed when the didnt get porn.

http://www.youtubedownloads.info

ilker March 29, 2007 at 12:28 pm

Porn sucks!

John Chow March 29, 2007 at 12:32 pm

I hear there is a lot of sucking in porn.

ilker March 29, 2007 at 12:37 pm

ROFLOL!!!

derrich March 29, 2007 at 1:04 pm

Dave March 29, 2007 at 1:27 pm

Haha okay that was funny.

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 4:27 pm

      (silent comment)

HMTKSteve March 29, 2007 at 12:14 pm

I beg to differ John. Your blog also has us, your comment whores!!!

ilker March 29, 2007 at 12:27 pm

“Someone would a sharp eye may noticed that 49 people came to my blog last week looking for “whores.” Thanks for visiting, but the only whores you’re going to find here are Google whores (and comment whores).”

Did JC write this after your comment?

John Chow March 29, 2007 at 12:32 pm

Yep

ilker March 29, 2007 at 12:38 pm

Hey you are replying my comments!!

Mubin March 29, 2007 at 4:24 pm

Sheesh when I made my first comment it was like number 4, and that I forgot that everyone comments on comments, now my first comment is like number #25.

I;m trying to rank for the word comment…

Dave March 30, 2007 at 7:11 am

I don’t think commenting on blogs will help you get ranked for the word comment :O

lyndonmaxewell March 29, 2007 at 9:59 pm

Ahh.. maybe that was what they were looking for. :D Comment ‘whores!

Dave March 30, 2007 at 10:36 am

I find that highly doubtful Lyndon :)

ilker March 29, 2007 at 12:19 pm

LOL! You get 49 clicks for whores

What is “steve manoeuvre”? :?:

John Chow March 29, 2007 at 12:34 pm

It’s an investment trick to make your mortgage interest tax deductible. I wrote about it in this post.

ilker March 29, 2007 at 12:39 pm

Wow dude.. you have like 1 comment on that post! Isn’t that embarrassing? :?:

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 9:23 pm

compared to all the last posts…you are right eheheheh

DanyO March 29, 2007 at 1:02 pm

yeah it seems to be an effective way to turn your mortgage interest tax deductible, too bad there aren’t too many other tax deductions I can apply to my salary

derrich March 29, 2007 at 1:03 pm

Exactly…LMFAO @ “whores”

Dave March 29, 2007 at 12:29 pm

I’m a comment whore and proud of it! :)

ilker March 29, 2007 at 12:40 pm

Shut up Dave! I’m commenting on this blog the whole day trying to pass you on Top commenters!!

ilker March 29, 2007 at 12:43 pm

OK dudes.. no more commenting!! I’m not the Top commenter

DanyO March 29, 2007 at 1:07 pm

you are now!

Dave March 29, 2007 at 1:08 pm

Enjoy it while it lasts :)

Marc March 30, 2007 at 7:31 am

Yep, we all seem to take or turn. It’s fun being at the top, but the ROI just isn’t worth it anymore.

DanyO March 29, 2007 at 1:15 pm

let the games begin!

*sits back and watches.

Marc March 30, 2007 at 7:32 am

You’re late to the game DanyO, the games began a long time ago ;)

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 4:33 pm

here’s my contribution

ilker March 29, 2007 at 7:35 pm

Damn you Dave!!

Dave March 29, 2007 at 8:45 pm

There is a method to my madness, and my comment whoring :)

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 9:24 pm

Let’s do the club of comment whores

derrich March 29, 2007 at 1:05 pm

Dare I say…?

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 4:34 pm

say it say it :D

ilker March 29, 2007 at 7:36 pm

LOLOL!

Marc March 30, 2007 at 7:33 am

Ok, I think the top commentators plugin should filter out anything that is combinations of Ls, Os and punctuation.

Geiger March 29, 2007 at 12:32 pm
Sean March 29, 2007 at 12:33 pm

Cool, congrats.

A big LOL to the “whore” searchers. LOL

ilker March 29, 2007 at 12:41 pm

Congratulations John!

(I’m kinda tired saying those words.. when will it be our turn? )

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 4:39 pm

maybe “tomorrow”, keep the good work ;)

ilker March 29, 2007 at 7:37 pm

I’m trying.. tomorrow is not coming!

DanyO March 29, 2007 at 12:41 pm

Well,

John once again proves his marketing skills to the world. Good One, I’m happy for you. It’s a nice little experiment.

ilker March 29, 2007 at 12:42 pm

It’s an evil experiment

DanyO March 29, 2007 at 12:52 pm

yes, evil, but good marketing.

I saw your comment asking how to look for keywords.

You can always use the Google Adsense bidtool, or the Overture Keyword tool, and http://www.wordtracker.com/ (frede trial shows data from MSN only, but you can extrapolate).

There is also a ton of articles on tools for keyword research.

ilker March 29, 2007 at 12:44 pm

Hmmm… there aren’t any more comments to reply to. GOOD!

derrich March 29, 2007 at 1:05 pm

Maybe we should just start a new topic. *shrug*

ilker March 29, 2007 at 7:37 pm

Ok.. what is your favorite color?

Tamar Weinberg March 29, 2007 at 12:46 pm

It’s nice to be transparent, John, but don’t you consider this very suspicious and a way to game the search engines? I actually blogged about it a little while ago.

I’m not sure many people are finding much relevancy in “make money online” from your blog. You tell others how YOU made money, but unless they had the same link juice as you, it does nothing for new folks and would have them running in circles. If anyone’s making money online, it’s the companies you’re promoting, particularly 1234pens.com with the contest you’re holding. I’m not sure why folks would want you to review their service either; a lot of people are truthfully getting overwhelmed by those paid reviews, myself included.

I could be in the minority here, and it seems that you have a very big community of stauch supporters, but I even question that…

Don’t get me wrong, John. I subscribe to your blog and have been reading for a good amount of time. But even you admit to being “evil” and I think the money is getting to your head.

derrich March 29, 2007 at 1:06 pm

Speaking of which…where’s my PS3?

Dave March 29, 2007 at 1:16 pm

While I agree not many of his posts are about making money online. The occasional posts he does have are solid gold. Like his adwords affiliate marketing + getting traffic to your blog post.

Tamar Weinberg March 29, 2007 at 1:43 pm

And that’s why I’m here.

I guess it’s just the way I see it. Would you watch a 6 minute TV show in a 30 minute time slot knowing that the other 24 minutes were commercials? Probably not.

John’s got the audience and he’s smart. The problem is leveraging that audience and keeping them interested. Right now, that audience includes individuals like you and me, who find value in those “golden” posts, and also individuals who are interested in investing in him financially. It is his responsibility to take a vested interest in both sides. I would say, however, that the interest is skewing in the favor of where the money’s at, which for him really is not his readers. That leaves people like me and you questioning whether he should really be ranked for “make money online” because Google is *very* concerned about relevance and this site begs the question whether the blog really is relevant.

Would a better solution to be creating a site that has only the tips to make money online? Of course not, because all of these advertisers would never get the exposure if he did.

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 4:47 pm

Some good points in here.
You must agree that this blog is “art”, and john is a very clever “art painter”.
This blog is a excellent example on how to win money and how to make users move to one direction.
It’s almost a step by step guide on How To Create A New Religion.

John Chow March 29, 2007 at 6:49 pm

There is a reason I am ranking for Make Money Online and Making Money On The Internet. You’ll see in the weeks and months to come. It’s all part of a grand evil plan.

Dave March 29, 2007 at 8:57 pm

Is John planning on entering the ebook market? :) Make money online with John Chow – the ebook!

Marc March 30, 2007 at 7:35 am

Well that has my interest piqued. I’ll be paying attention John :)

Dave March 29, 2007 at 8:55 pm

That’s a good point, in terms of the lower amount of “golden posts” However, there is only so many things you can write about in terms of making money online. John posts several updates a day, so it’s natural that some of the posts will be off topic.

Also, he has the top post section, which compiles a lot of these “golden” posts for his users.

lyndonmaxewell March 29, 2007 at 10:03 pm

Listen to the man! He has a greater evil plan coming right up! That should keep some interest and suspense here..

Dave March 30, 2007 at 7:13 am

I’m sure John has a plan to leverage his traffic to make even more money on this blog. No suspense here…I just know it :)

Dave March 29, 2007 at 1:18 pm

Also, I forgot to mention…even if the 4000 users who come here every month from Google for the make money online terms don’t have an interest or become repeat visitors, I’m sure he’ll make some money off them…for free. Doesn’t get any eviler than that :p

DanyO March 29, 2007 at 1:37 pm

yeah, it increases his exposure, didn’t cost him a whole lot, so that’s good business.

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 4:45 pm

A very good business, like everyone said is “evil

Hawaii SEO March 29, 2007 at 6:23 pm

Aloha Tamar,

I think it’s very relevant. Making money online is the only reason I subscribe to and read this blog.

The other results that rank well for the term are selling products & get-rich-quick schemes.

John is teaching general theory and providing real life examples & results. At this time, John seems to be the most relevant listing on the first page of results.

Can you recommend some other resources for making money online that don’t get the attention they deserve?

John Chow March 29, 2007 at 6:45 pm

The money is getting to my head? He he he. Maybe if this blog starts making serious money, it would.

Dave March 29, 2007 at 9:00 pm

I don’t think some people realize that you run the TTZ, or how much money it makes compared to this blog :)

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 9:19 pm

Well said Dave. John, you must (if you want of course) do some posts about TTZ income and power

Dave March 30, 2007 at 7:14 am

I doubt he will, If I owned a network that big…I wouldn’t be discussing the financials. I am quite sure it’s revenues dwarf the blogs revenues.

Marc March 30, 2007 at 7:36 am

Yeah, John’s loaded. This blog’s income is peanuts to him

lyndonmaxewell March 29, 2007 at 10:06 pm

Gosh! Even $1000 is serious money to me.. Not to say $7K! Guess that’s the difference in age, huh?

Josh Rives March 29, 2007 at 1:00 pm

I wonder what you have to do to pass bidvertiser for number one. That sounds like a good post idea. Getting from the top ten to the top one.

DanyO March 29, 2007 at 1:38 pm

although an ambitious goal, I’m not sure if it’s worth the effort… would be nice to see though the difference between rank#1 and rank#2…

Josh Rives March 29, 2007 at 2:27 pm

I thought it was a pretty big difference. Something like 70% of traffic goes to the first result, but I could be wrong.

DanyO March 29, 2007 at 1:05 pm

So, just doing an unofficial post here, but how many people here implemented John’s Idea for site review backlinking(verbatim, or a variation) on their own site?

derrich March 29, 2007 at 1:07 pm

*raises hand* ish

DanyO March 29, 2007 at 1:14 pm

anyone else?

Dave March 29, 2007 at 1:17 pm

I plan on doing that with my blog when it gets more trafficked.

DanyO March 29, 2007 at 1:30 pm

yeah, I guess a lot of the marketing only starts to be effective once you have a good following.

Dave March 29, 2007 at 9:03 pm

Leveraging traffic once you have it, is very important. John is an expert at this :)

Abdul Aziz March 29, 2007 at 1:18 pm

Not me

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 4:49 pm

I know at least 3, but is supose that “hundreds” are doing that.

lyndonmaxewell March 29, 2007 at 10:07 pm

Yea, I got afew emails from some people around here too.. :D But I have rejected them all.

Dave March 30, 2007 at 7:16 am

Yeah people keep asking me to review their blog too, I don’t think it’s a fair proposition when the blog in question isn’t highly trafficked. I would exchange reviews though…if the blog was relevant.

James March 29, 2007 at 1:18 pm

Considering it. Those are some pretty good result JC, keep’em coming.

DanyO March 29, 2007 at 2:03 pm

will be nice to see what kind of variations people will come up with.

James March 29, 2007 at 2:15 pm

I pretty much keyword spamed the phrase in my last post so it’ll probably get banned for that phrase.:)
Maybe I should go for mispells. I suffer from typlexia anyway.

James March 29, 2007 at 2:19 pm

The race for top commenter here is hilarious. I just noticed that it was happening this morning.

DanyO March 29, 2007 at 2:24 pm

Yes, it is hilarious, but it’s all fun and games… until someone loses an eye, or a finger..

Dave March 29, 2007 at 9:04 pm

Haha, I’ll take all comers! :)

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 9:22 pm

Let’s join forces and make an army

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 9:16 pm

This is war! lol. And of course an experience.

lyndonmaxewell March 29, 2007 at 10:10 pm

Well, I guess I would settle for any place in the list though. Takes too much effort now. It’s Crazy!

Michael Kwan March 29, 2007 at 2:24 pm

I rank for “300 This is Sparta”

ilker March 29, 2007 at 7:43 pm

Haha.. that is funny!

Mark March 29, 2007 at 3:00 pm

Look at this site had to say about John. Ugh, stupid people

http://ultraentertainment.blogspot.com/2007/03/john-chow.html

James March 29, 2007 at 7:18 pm

He’s trying to look like he is not trying to do a review of John’s blog.
Talk about dishonest reviews.

Ben Hoffman - Internet Marketing March 29, 2007 at 6:01 pm

Great work John, I will link to you via make money on the internet, but do I get another link back in return?

Dave March 30, 2007 at 7:18 am

Only if you do a review of his blog on your site following his rules.

Miriguy March 29, 2007 at 6:15 pm

Wow.. with those vulgarities that he is using. I wonder how he could survive AdSense. Craziness.

supermom_in_ny March 29, 2007 at 6:47 pm

Great!

I’m sandwiched between you and your buddy Darren! Yes, I’m the supermom_in_ny from the Squidoo lens. It’s currently found on the first page of Google, under your blog and above problogger.net.

In case you don’t know which site I’m talking about. Here’s the name and URL:
Make Money Online
http://www.squidoo.com/supermom_in_ny/

I guess there are worse places one can be, right?

Ciao!

SuperMom in NY!

lyndonmaxewell March 29, 2007 at 10:14 pm

I’ve read about you and your posts long before, and they are rather interesting and helpful! Kudos to you supermom!

Stuart Hannig March 29, 2007 at 8:04 pm

Interesting techniques

David March 29, 2007 at 8:13 pm

Which program/plugin do you use to keep the stats on your google searches, John??

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 8:15 pm

That screenshot is from google analytics

David March 29, 2007 at 8:20 pm

Ahh…thats what I was looking for…thanks!!!

lyndonmaxewell March 29, 2007 at 9:48 pm

Interesting.. Sooner or later, everyone who wants to make money will pop up here at JC.com!

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 9:52 pm

that’s a (almost) proven fact

Dave March 29, 2007 at 10:28 pm

I dunno about _everyone_ I mean, the Internet is a big place :)

Paul. March 30, 2007 at 12:21 am

John,

What analytics package do you use?

Abdul Aziz March 30, 2007 at 4:29 am

This was quite a clever way of getting to the top of Google for one of the most popular search terms on the internet without spending a dime. Kudos to you, John!!

lyndonmaxewell March 30, 2007 at 9:35 am

He had the help of everyone here. :D God beats me if he doesn’t appear there instead!

Mark March 30, 2007 at 5:17 am

Interesting update John. Where did you get the statistics that ‘only 12% of Google users click the sponsored ads’. This seems rather high to me.

Mosley March 30, 2007 at 6:58 am

its aways funny when you see strange keywords… you alway wonder how you came up. Right now my server is dying or I would tell you what some of mine were.

The funny thing is when every I type the keywords in I never seem to find my site anywere in the frist 10 pages of results.

It depends on which google data center i guess. And, that person searching may have randomly clicked on your site after the first 10pages.

How do you add google analytics to a Wordpress blog? I don’t see an option for it. Did you have to go in and manually edit the code?

Hey!

Just did a Google search on the term MAKE MONEY ONLINE and I come up second today.

It changes regularly, so the three of us will be switching the 2-4 slots often.

I’m not making the kind of money you make…yet.
I’m not going to stop trying until I do. It may take me awhile, but I have you and Darren to thank for all the great tips!

Enjoy your weekend!

Nice work John, I like your transparency in sharing this information with your readers. This is why your blog rocks.

My favorite part, as others have mentioned, is the whore listing lol. Normally that would be a bad thing, but i think we can all agree its the opposite here hehe

I might be wrong in wondering but what program do you use for that search engine record?

“Comment whores”…that’s just too funny, John. You know what, you should start your own urban dictionary someday; that’d be legendary!
