Make Money Online with YouTube

written by John Chow on September 28, 2007

How to make $593 in less than one hour

It looks like Google’s $1.65 billion takeover of YouTube is about to pay some dividends. YouTube is rolling out a new video unit with Google ads embedded into them. Publishers who run the unit will get a share of the income generated.

From the looks of things, publishers will be displaying videos from Google’s choosing – you will not be able to earn money showing your own videos in the player. YouTube is claiming the video content will be targeted to your site because you can choose the categories or have Google choose the video based on your site content.

I checked my Google AdSense control panel but so far the new video unit has not appeared. However, YouTube has already put up an information page about it.

Oh man, I didn’t believe it when you sent me the link…

Michael @ tech September 29, 2007 at 1:28 am

What do you mean?

Philomena Ojikutu September 29, 2007 at 1:46 am

Thanks ohn for this info,

The U Tube would explode beyond imagination when this comes on stream. Everybody would want a bite of the pie of the Google Billions, mabe it is a 9th birthday anniversary gift by Google to the web.

Michael @ tech September 29, 2007 at 3:41 am

You won’t make any significant money with this Youtube thing. But it is worth a try. John might make a lot with this because he has got tonnes of viewers.

Shaun C September 29, 2007 at 6:55 am

HOLY COW, that is like … the coolest thing ever. :D

Tyson Williams September 29, 2007 at 10:01 am

I think this is the end of YouTube, who wants to sit and watch commercials before the video is actually played. I will not for sure… It is terrible decision on Google part and there is a lot of talk already about user backlash.

Phil September 30, 2007 at 7:38 am

I think you didn’t read well. Those are not pre or post roll ads. They appear outside of the video content so I think it might work. Let’s hope Google implements this for people who use their own embedded player.

Shawn Knight September 28, 2007 at 9:17 pm

Interesting. I was wondering how long it would be until YouTube added ads.

I wonder, will you get paid based on video plays, or will the user be required to click the ads in the video or something totally different?

lyricsreg September 29, 2007 at 12:18 am

I believe they have to click. There might also be a small amount for impressions

Googlelady September 29, 2007 at 2:03 am

You get paid when someone clicks on the ad but if the advertiser choose to advertise in your site, you receive per impression. Anyways, this new advertising method you have to pay per impression and not per click.

Kemal Inanc September 29, 2007 at 4:50 am

I agree. Most users would avoid from the site if there is forced clicks. Google will not risk its investment, i think.

boring bro September 28, 2007 at 9:30 pm

Interesting but I really don’t understand about how to generate income..
Still wondering whether it is useful or net..

Michael @ tech September 29, 2007 at 1:06 am

You may get a few bucks but this will be nothing major.

Googlelady September 29, 2007 at 2:05 am

Depends on your niche it will be usefull. Now some vblogs will be more than happy to use adsense (Tip?)

Zeila Rich September 28, 2007 at 9:37 pm

How timely?
I was about to launch Adsense Resurrected, of how I made Adsense come back alive again. Well, proof of earnings on my blog. Made $50K since August 2007 from just one account.

With YouTube Adsense, I think our earnings will just keep on adding.
Thanks for that.

I think it’s about knowing how to use Adsense right. They could be coming up with so many new formats, but if you don’t know how to use them right, and profit from Google’s billions of advertising revenues (and increasing), you will lose out.
Look at John Chow. He uses Adsense for the wrong niche. Most of his readers already know Adsense. We are so used to seeing Adsense Ads.

Well, if you are interested, you can join our mailing list to be notified when we launch. There’s even a chance to win the book without paying for it. My blog has more information.

Thanks for the info John. Now I have to update the book before we launch.

bob cobb September 29, 2007 at 7:12 am

Yeah, I’m gonna have to call BS on that. Seems like a tactic just to try to sell books.

GPT Sites September 29, 2007 at 9:15 am

I’ve never heard of you.
I doubt you made that much.

Zeila Rich September 29, 2007 at 11:08 am

I am not doing a hard sell here, as I don’t have too.

I use Google Adwords most of the time for my business.

IF it kills the cat, like curiousity does, you can have a look at my blog, and see for yourself the proof of earnings. I know it’s not easy to tell people that, look here, I made so much, unless you show them.

By the way, did you happen to notice that John Chow didn’t show any proof of earnings for August, except listing down how much he earns from each stream of revenue? And yet, you believed him.

Well, it’s fine. We started out underground. We make money from adsense, and not on Internet Marketing. So we are unknown. But it’s ok. We don’t need the fame to make money from adsense using our tactics.

For John, he has too. He has to be famous to make money, not us.

Tactic to sell books? If I could just let you guys download it for free I would. But most people will not take action, unless they feel the need too, especially after they pay for something. We give most of the price of our products back to the ones who referred us. We used the profit margin to pay off the bandwidth and production costs, that’s about it.

Believe it or not, it’s up to you. We’ve learnt to move on. But at least give yourself the benefit of the doubt, and check out our blog. We have not launched though. If you really want, I could give you the book for free, when we launch. Just email me.

Reach for the Riches!
P.S. Remember Rich4Life.us, Shaz bought for us the AD on johnchow. We are the owners of that site, and Shaz is the marketing agent for that.

Brian Vaughan September 28, 2007 at 9:41 pm

Thought this would be coming soon, could be a lot of fun to see how it works out. Checked my account I don’t have it activated yet either.

Money Socket September 28, 2007 at 9:51 pm

This looks very interesting. I can imagine it will be beneficial for both publisher and advertiser. A video attached to an ad seems more appealing to the plain ol adsense, which everyone is immune to now anyway. First smart move I’ve seen with this youtube acquisition.

Liberty and New Creation September 28, 2007 at 9:57 pm

Yeah, hopefully this new blood will inject some life into adsense earnings.

lyricsreg September 30, 2007 at 12:49 pm

Neah … video ads don’t pay squat … nothing’s changed

Liberty and New Creation September 28, 2007 at 9:54 pm

Yeah, I’m confused. How does this earn us income?

Israel September 28, 2007 at 9:59 pm

simple. you serve adsense based youtube ads. depending on googles metrics you get paid. just like adsense.

Israel September 28, 2007 at 9:57 pm

this is actually cool. now all google needs to do is buy out wikipedia and serve adsense ads on that.

lyricsreg September 29, 2007 at 12:20 am

Oh yeah … now we’re talking money ! :)

Klaudio September 29, 2007 at 6:23 am

Dammn, then I will not say internet. I would say ggg

GPT Sites September 29, 2007 at 9:16 am

Oh wow, that’d be crazy.

Make Money Online September 28, 2007 at 10:16 pm

Wow, that’s a cool feature. Video ads in more opinion are so much better than text link ads.

dcr September 28, 2007 at 10:16 pm

I’d rather be able to choose the videos I display on my site, and then get a percentage of the ad revenues for ads shown in that video. As poorly targeted as I have seen textual AdSense ads, I don’t really trust Google/YouTube to display videos that match my content.

Chris Jacobson September 28, 2007 at 10:41 pm

AdSense is a lost cause now isn’t it?

Zeila Rich September 29, 2007 at 1:21 am

Anyone who thinks like you should read my blog of how I resurrected Adsense… Adsense is not dead.
50K a month from one account is a lost cause?

Guess not… :)

GPT Sites September 29, 2007 at 9:20 am

Self-promotion  .

Zeila Rich September 29, 2007 at 11:12 am

not really, i rather promote through Adwords

It’s serendipity. We were about to launch, and John Chow talks about a new format in Google Adsense Program.

Since, I am adding content to this blog, I might as well, benefit myself too from commenting on his blog.

Don’t you think? Isn’t that what you are doing too? No worries, I will be getting a ReviewMe by John Chow too, so I hope by then you don’t call it self-promotion.

Phil September 30, 2007 at 7:44 am

Hey, we’re talking about videos ads, so stop spamming the comments with your lame self-promotion and your lame website. You make money on the net? Woo-hoo! So do we. Now get lost.

TBO September 28, 2007 at 10:54 pm

sounds cool, but not sure if it fits the theme of my site.

Michael @ tech September 29, 2007 at 1:26 am

You should be able to change the layout

TBO September 28, 2007 at 10:55 pm

btw…if anyone can use 1000 bizcards for free…sign up for my newsletter.

Blog Contests September 29, 2007 at 1:54 am

One comment that didn’t make sense and a second promoting the VistaPrint affiliate offer I presume… tsk tsk

Xacur September 28, 2007 at 11:33 pm

I think it will be like the video ads of AdSense, well it seems a better way to get clicks, but the question is how well related the videos will be. BTW, I’ve just seen a blugrush link and I tough it was to this same web, but when I clicked it was johncow.com, hehe, my mistake.
I hope this video unit thing comes soon.

Kemal Inanc September 29, 2007 at 12:46 am

Very interesting. When I heard that google and youtube agreement, i was wondering how the $1.65 billion come back to google in a short term. But this is a good idea i think, why am i not think that?

lilian September 29, 2007 at 1:19 am

I’m earning 15,000 Malaysian ringgit ! dollar to dollar , vis-a-vis u’re not anything better than i do ! damn !

Michael @ tech September 29, 2007 at 1:24 am

It is very easy to understand how it will earn you money. But there are doubts of how much it will earn you. You will have to have a massive amount of audience in order to earn a little money.

Zeila Rich September 29, 2007 at 2:38 am

I disagree…

Kemal Inanc September 29, 2007 at 4:44 am

We can not know this without trying out.

goldfries September 29, 2007 at 2:21 am

bah. sounds like it’s gonna be annoying. :(

well, I’m just hoping youtube doesn’t spoil the user experience.

BlogsTheme.com September 29, 2007 at 3:03 am

I know other video sharing websites are paying their users on a CPM basis. $3-4 CPM. Which I think is better than this, and they have the ad at the beginning of the video that is being played.

Israel September 29, 2007 at 10:54 pm

can you email me these websites. i would like to learn more.

CKacey September 29, 2007 at 3:49 am

Someday…..
Adsense is using our computers like ad agencies use television. The advertising agencies pay a premium for high traffic time slots. Perhaps sometime in the future we can demand our own rates based on a similar idea.
I think many of us are underestimating our own potential/power and that of this medium to bring financial gain. This move by Google is a step in the right direction if, we utlize it correctly.

Making The Money September 29, 2007 at 3:52 am

Text ads are one thing but the load time delay from this might just be a little too much for my users. Will be good for those of you running video and MM based websites though.

Neven September 29, 2007 at 5:01 am

Hi John!
Here’s an idea for your next post… Go to Agloco blog, they’ve made a distribution plan… which is hmmm… very crapy? to say the least… I’d love to see your perspective in all of this.
Greetings from Croatia!

Home Recording September 29, 2007 at 6:34 am

It makes sense that advertising revenues have to come in to keep the service operational. How much of the advertising will be the right mix with viewing area will make it worthwhile or not.

Collin September 29, 2007 at 6:48 am

Wow can you say Google is one day going to rule the world.

chica with issues September 29, 2007 at 9:25 am

Interesting, but not relevant for all bloggers sadly.

Karol Krizka September 29, 2007 at 9:34 am

Has YouTube been making any profit up till now?

Btw, what’s propeller? I saw “Submit to Propeller” in your footer thing.

Israel September 29, 2007 at 10:52 pm

its netscapes version of digg.

Promotion Techniques September 29, 2007 at 11:15 am

Sounds like a great idea but I doubt that I will be able to put it to use on my current sites. But for an arcade/funny picture sort of site I bet this would probably work real well!

Teddy September 29, 2007 at 11:19 am

I am not using a gmail account for my adsense service. Can I join it in the future ?

Webmaster Money September 29, 2007 at 5:42 pm

Sounds interesting kind of advertisment. I am wondering what would be the CTR.

Neil September 29, 2007 at 8:17 pm

More than happy to give it a try. Maybe not so much the personal blog but i have a great niche that`s really getting some legs now.

Deepak Dutta September 29, 2007 at 10:10 pm

My Adsense account does not show any video unit

Seems YouTube delete the page! The page is not available any more.

I was looking for something beautiful from Google. Adsense sucks. Takes away all visitors. hope this will keep the good looks apart from making money too
