[...] As I have previously posted, I am really happy with the rise of search engine traffic. Back in August, I received just 269 visitors from search engines. In September, that number jumped to 2,585 search engine visitors. For the 26 days of this month, search engines (well Google) have sent me 9,028 visitors. The numbers look even more impressive when I do a week-by-week break down. [...]

You can mediate the Digg Effect by using a "cacheing" option in the back-end of your blog.

It can greatly lower the stress on the mySQL side of things.

[...] However, as John Chow pointed out recently, you get an ugly red error splotch if your post is Dugg from upcoming stories instead of the story post itself. What can be done? It would be nice to control which posts get the button. However, the ‘Digg This’ plugin does not give you that choice. Normally, you cannot run PHP code from a post. Or, can you? Thanks to another superb plugin by BlueSome named Exec-PHP, you can do just that. [...]

Bandwidth isn't a problem. The blog will consume only 45 Gigs this month. Most webhostig plans allow way more than that. Blogs are mostly text and as such don't consume a great deal of bandwidth.

What is a problem is consuming too much of the server's resources. The reason an ISP shuts down account because of a Digg is not that they’re doing too much bandwidth, but that they're taking too much resources. A Digg can spike memory and CPU usage and make other sites on the shared server not accessible. To protect those sites, the ISP will kill yours.

John,

Since you've been getting dugg ever so often in this month, how much it would cost you for the bandwidth and a typical hosting account/server rental?

This is merely to factor in and understand how much are the expenditures for the site to stay up and how much it really comes to after deducting such expenditures. I understand that you're probably hosting this blog on the same network as your tech sites and probably getting a good deal on bandwidth, but do let us know how much bandwidth it consumed and how much it's gonna cost to an average person.

Cheers :)
