Man, That’s A Lot Of Water!

written by John Chow on April 15, 2007

We finally got to see the world famous Niagara Falls and the only thing I have to say is, “That is a lot of water!” The weather was cloudy and damn cold! So cold in fact that some parts of the falls were iced up. The boat that normally takes you under the falls wasn’t operating because of the ice.

It’s kind cool that all I had to do was look over the Niagara River and see New York on the other side. I can see the US tourists on the US side of the falls. I waved to them but they didn’t wave back. I think it’s because they’re jealous because Canada’s side of the falls is a lot prettier. That, and we have a casino on our side. I was told that more US visitors come to the Canada to see the falls than Canadian visitors going to the US. Here are some photos.

Damn it looks majestic … is it just me or the pictures seesm abit ‘dark’. Shot in the evening?

Michael Kwan April 15, 2007 at 7:35 pm

And it was cloudy.

I’ve never been to the Eastern part of Canada. In fact, the furthest east I’ve been in our country is Edmonton/Calgary. I have been to NY though.

uncle sha April 15, 2007 at 8:42 pm

Ahh ok, i was wondering where’s the sunshine … cloudy around this time of the year eh

Dave April 15, 2007 at 11:32 pm

Yeah, the American side view of the falls sucks compared to ours! :)

Jonix April 17, 2007 at 11:51 am

beautiful photos indeed.

What camera did you used john?

Derrich April 15, 2007 at 8:21 pm

I bet that mist from the water creates a bit of a “cloudy” look to the pics. Either way, pics we can appreciate. Thanks for sharing, John.

Dave April 15, 2007 at 11:30 pm

Could’ve just been bad lighting

Vik April 15, 2007 at 7:27 pm

Nice pics..too bad you couldn’t go on the boat ride..boat ride is the bset

Dave April 15, 2007 at 11:32 pm

Not in the weather we’re having right now…the boat ride would be the coldest :)

Matt Jones April 16, 2007 at 3:27 am

I think its worth enduring a bit of cold for something as spectucular as that.

blabWire April 15, 2007 at 7:40 pm

Great photos, John! I’m really enjoying the posts on your escapades this week.

It’s great to see John experiencing all the great attractions around my stomping grounds :)

Matt Jones April 16, 2007 at 3:25 am

Yeah its nice to dream….

Chad Dangler April 15, 2007 at 7:55 pm

Oh yeah I went to Niagra Falls when I visited Toronto and that area. It was very awesome, and like you said, very cold. April is a bad month to visit it seems like.

Warren Buffett April 15, 2007 at 8:17 pm

8th wonder of the world!!

Ripley Norta April 15, 2007 at 8:21 pm

I was there a couple of years ago on my roadtrip across the US, and I do agree with you John. That is a lot of water. When you consider how much more water is backing up behind it, several lake fulls of it, the mind boggles.

I was lucky enough to be there in August, so the weather was nice and warm. Even so, the mist still put a bit of a chill in the air.

Kumiko April 15, 2007 at 8:31 pm

John, is the Canadian tourist board paying you $300 for each review of Canada’s landmarks? THAT would be evil!

Kumiko

Article Checker April 15, 2007 at 10:53 pm

I wouldn’t be surprised if they actually did pay him. However, if I were John, I’d probably charge a little more…now that’s evil to the nth power.

Ed Lau April 15, 2007 at 11:25 pm

Oh, he’s thought of ideas that are far more evil…believe me.

Dave April 15, 2007 at 11:35 pm

I can believe it :)

David Jones April 15, 2007 at 8:41 pm

Cool pictures. Ive never been to Niagra Falls myself, but people Ive known that has visited all had the same thing to say as you “thats a lot of water”

James April 15, 2007 at 8:51 pm

In Cantonese, water is money

Lots of water = lots of money.

Great photos of the falls. The falls on the Canada side are a bit nicier!! You will have to return some cold winter to see the falls when they are frozen!! Always nice to forget about business for a little bit and have some fun!!

Dave April 15, 2007 at 11:38 pm

I believe the falls have only frozen over once….it may be more, but it’s not a regular occurance.

Article Checker April 15, 2007 at 10:29 pm

Cloudy and icy yet it STILL looks amazing. Great pictures, John — made me feel nostalgic a whole lot.

Ed Lau April 15, 2007 at 11:25 pm

Did all that water really make you want to go take a wizz?

Dave April 15, 2007 at 11:41 pm

The falls are GREAT to visit during the Summer, you can go to the one side and stand in the mist to cool you down.

My friend does the sound at the Cirque Niagara that runs during the summer as well, it’s a very interesting show, (it’s currently setup in Woodbine in Toronto, you should check it out if you have time….amazing acrobatics.

While you’re at it, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Ontario Science Center are all places close by that are worth checking out :)

There is not even 1/2 part of water in the world, imagine global warming problems been ignore for few 10years later. Just this part of water already can flood our whole city. Beauty and power of nature when u treat it nicely.

Bob Buskirk April 16, 2007 at 1:57 am

Damn the falls look awesome!

Gath April 16, 2007 at 2:01 am

Definitely go back when it is warmer & take the boat ride.

Shawn Knight April 16, 2007 at 2:08 am

Very cool pictures, I wouldn’t mind visiting the falls sometime. I’d be snapping pics left and right! Oh and I got a nice laugh outta “they didn’t wave back” hah

Matt Jones April 16, 2007 at 3:26 am

I’ve always wanted to go there, I’m surprised you havn’t been there allready John!

Christina April 16, 2007 at 7:16 am

I live in Syracuse. Believe me, the weather is always crappy. It shocks me that anyone even lives here sometimes! Great pics, though. Come back when you can go on the boat. It’s well worth it, I promise.

Niagara falls are neat, but Iguazu Falls are amazing

Matt Jones April 16, 2007 at 2:34 pm

I heard about those, they are yet another place to visit and spend the vuture blogging millions!

Tyler April 16, 2007 at 8:59 am

No night time pictures? They light up the falls in a display of colours! Though I guess if the weather isn’t great it won’t show up nicely. I noticed that one of the observation areas (next to the lower part of the falls) was either a) covered in snow or b) covered in ice..

Crazy

Niagra falls is something promising that everyone must see at least once in their lifetime. the size and the volume of it is amazing

Cindy April 16, 2007 at 11:54 pm

I have never been there during winter time, looks nice :)

Russell Rockefeller April 17, 2007 at 7:10 am

Considering that Niagara Falls is about 5 minutes from where I live I’m surprised I don’t get to see it more often. I try to make a trip over there at least once a year but it’s such a tourist trap now compared to how it was ten or fifteen years ago before the casinos. If you ever come back during the summer definitely take a trip on the maid of the mist boat ride under the falls. It’s very pretty because it showcases a lot of rainbows due to the sunlight coming through the mist. At night during the summer there are fireworks and a light show.

Simonne April 17, 2007 at 7:25 am

It surely looks like it’s the end of the world. And all those people there, waiting to be sorted and directed either to heaven or hell

Jennifer Lynn April 20, 2007 at 10:42 am

Hey John – wish I would’ve known you’d be in town. I live about 10 minutes from Niagara Falls. The American side is unfortunately more ghetto but the Falls are truly stunning.

=^..^=

Russ April 21, 2007 at 12:35 pm
