Maxed Out Apple Macbook Air Unboxing

Maxed Out Apple Macbook Air

The Fedex man dropped off my maxed out Apple Macbook Air today. This is the fastest and most expensive Air you can buy. The 13.3 inch Air weighs in at only 2.9 pounds and looks impossibly thin. If you add a handle to it, you can use it as an axe and cut people up for Halloween.

I’ve only played with the air for a few hours but so far, the experience has been awesome. The solid state drive is amazingly fast. Boot up time takes only 14 seconds and it wakes up from sleep mode in less than a second. This air will be my new trade show computer and it’s near perfect for what it does. I went with the maxed out config to make sure I can process movies and photos on it.

At $1,799, a maxed out Macbook Air isn’t cheap but it’s still cheaper than the original Macbook Air that Neil Patel gave me a few years ago. I’ll have some comparisons between the old and new Air later. I’ll have more to say about the new Air once I have more time to play with it. For now, here’s an unboxing video that I processed using the Air and uploaded to YouTube. The new Macbook Air comes preinstalled with iMovie 11 and offers 1080P upload so this is a 1080P unboxing.

Congratulations John, I know you are going to have a blast with it.

That’s awesome! I think this will be a good alternative to the iPad if you need a little more power.

    1. John Chow says:

The 11″ would be a good alternative for the iPad. The 13″ is more of a replacement for the 13″ Macbook Pro. I can fit the 11″ Air into my Scottyvest. Can’t do that with the 13. 🙂

i like this, Mac always better than windows

    1. d3so says:

Not really. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

      1. Harshad says:

Try using Windows on a Mac machine and there will be no disadvantages 🙂

  4. Mathew Day says:

You’re right, it could make a really expensive axe. 🙂 Would love to get my hands on one. Nice video, the screen resolution is quite impressive. Let alone the incredible size and capabilities that bad boy has!

  5. Keith says:

Never had a Mac, but after seeing that, it sure looks good. Nice and light for bathroom reading.

  6. Abhik says:

I always wanted to have a mac air, but just can’t afford it.. It’s a expensive one compared to dell’s alienware.

    1. John Chow says:

Mac are expensive compared to any other computer. However, you do get what you pay for.

      1. Abhik says:

        I know..
But, I refuse to pay for the Brand Name.
If it’s the quality which matters, I’ll go with Dell.

Well, everyone has their own opinion.

        1. Harshad says:

With Mac, it’s not about the brand. Their hardware and OS is far more better than any other machines. Problems like machine running slow, freeze etc. are almost zero in Mac. I have never come across such issues on my Macbook pro…. It’s simply amazing.

      2. fas says:

Allienware does not stand a chance in front of OS X…

        1. Harshad says:

As far as my knowledge goes, Alienware uses windows vista. Mac OS X is much better than Vista. It has also been proven that Windows 7 works best on a Mac machine.

        2. krillz says:

Do you even have the slightest idea on what you are talking about?

What you just said was something equivalent to that a v12 engine is better than a Volvo.

          OS X = operating system
Alienware = assembles computers with awesome specs for gamers.

So hardware-wise alienware would put apples comuters down the drain any day. However they are used for different task thus you can’t really compare them.

          1. Harshad says:

You said Alienware is better than OS X, so I thought you are comparing the OS.

          2. Harshad says:

I mean fas said it, not you.

Wanna benchmark against my maxed out Alienware M15x (which comes out at over £2500)? Nope thought not.

I own a couple of Macbooks. Relatively speaking they are toys. The day OS X becomes as popular as Windows is the day you lot will suddenly discover just how many holes it has in it. True it’s not as buggy as Windows but the way fan boys bang on about it being unfallable is hilarious.

          4. John Chow says:

If anything looks like a toy, it’s the Alienware laptops. It would look right at home next to the transformer toy. Alienware looked OK when they were independent. But now that Dell owns them, their looks has gone completely downhill.

Also, why would you compare an ultra light notebook against something that weigh more than twice as much? Anyone looking at an Air wouldn’t consider a M15x and vica versa.

  7. David says:

Generally speaking the smaller and more advanced a gadget is makes it harder to pry into and this model is much harder to get into than past systems.

  8. Is the new MacBook Air realistic if you do a lot of video editing, especially HD video? A 128 GB HD seems very tiny, especially if you’re working with a 60 GB project in iMovie.

    1. John Chow says:

If the movies are for YouTube (under 10 min), it’s no problem. My unboxing video was done in 1080P. If you’re doing more serious movie editing, it’s better to stick with a high end Macbook Pro.

  9. Looks sweet John…I’m looking to get another laptop..I might check this one out and give an go..

    This is my dream…

  11. Stephane says:

If know this is off-topic but does anybody know which video editing software John Chow is using for most of his videos?

    1. John Chow says:

I use iMovie 11. It comes free with the Mac.

    2. Harshad says:

I have seen John use iMovie, he is really good with it.

  12. zakton says:

It feels great to have a new Macbook! Have fun with your new Air, John!

  13. Harshad says:

The best thing about the new Macbook Air is that it has a Lanport. I’m gonna gift it to my wife on her B’day…was planning for an iPad but it seems this would be a better choice since she already has an iPhone.

    1. Harshad says:

Aahh….this one does not have an ethernet port too… damn!

  14. Rich Dennis says:

Looks awesome. I just picked up a new iMac and iPod Touch. Next, I’m thinking about a 2nd generation iPad when they come out.

  15. John, Have a blast with your new toy!

I am a PC man myself – I just like Windows better (don’t like Finder).

  16. Salman Ahsan says:

This Air is so slick!! darn :). i bet this would replace my iPad.

    1. John Chow says:

The 11.6″ would make a good iPad replacement. But I would keep my iPad with the 13.3″. The bigger Air does make a good replacement for the 13.3″ Macbook Pro.

  17. That is fast! Hopefully next year I can upgrade my Mac Book Pro. Maybe I’ll get this or the new MBP. I think I would keep my iPad with this as well.

  18. Chris S. says:

Awesome!! I want one. My only concern is a lack of firewire 800 or a faster port for external drive video editing on larger projects. Otherwise this Air slays my current 3.5 year old MacBook pro!

  19. Hey john I am from future and that’s why know that it’s your first investment in this month for mac, will be second also soon in this month only.
