Guess My August 2007 Blog Income
I am sure everyone is wondering how much the blog made in August. With the release of the new money making theme, everyone is expecting me to set a new blog income record. However, you have to keep in mind that all those banners ad sales are for September, not August. I may have been paid for those banner spots but they won’t be included in the August recap.
With the above in mind, why don’t you go ahead and take a guess at what August blog income will come in at.
Faster Loading Theme
Speaking of money making themes, Nate Whitehill of Unique Blog Designs has been busy optimizing the graphics of John Chow dot Com so it loads faster. The Graphical elements have been reduced in size and I’ve reduced the number of posts on the front page from ten to five. Page load time has been cut in half. Nate still has to correct the side scroll problem at 1024 resolution. That should be done this weekend.
First eMonetized 125×125 Button Winner
Congrats to Daily Moolah for being the first winner of eMonetized’s John Chow dot Com banner contest. Daily Moolah will have their banner running in the sponsor section for a full 24 hours. There are four winners in total and each will have their banner on this blog over the next four days.
Two Hours of Blogging In Two Minutes
Matt Jones of Blogging Fingers recorded himself doing two hours of blogging and using the Net for blog related purposes. He then 60X the video speed to make it fit into two minutes. Did he visit your blog?
Two 24″ or One 30″ LCD?
I’m going to be upgrading my display setup next month. I’m trying to decide between running two 24 inch or one big 30 inch LCD. Before you go recommend I get two 30 inch, I would if my desk was big enough. What would you do given the choice? A 30″ LCD would give me a 2560×1600 resolution. Two 24″ would give me 3840×1200. One thing for sure, you won’t hear me complaining about having to scroll down to see the first post on this blog. ![]()

Two monitors are always better than one. 30″ is just overkill.
My 2 cents
Reply to this commentAgreed - 24” will do well!

Reply to this commentMy guess for the August income is $14,349
Two monitors is better, but that doesn’t mean he can’t have a 30″ too. If it were me, I would go 1×30″ + 1×20″ in portrait mode. This solution would allow John to re-use one of his existing monitors. The ideal matching monitor in portrait mode however is a 20″ non widescreen with a resolution of 1600×1200 that way it’ll match the 30″ (2560×1600 + 1200×1600)
The amount of space that would take up on a desktop wouldn’t be much more (if any) than if you were to have 2×24″ monitors.

Reply to this commentThat’s not a bad idea!
Reply to this commentThat is a good idea. I vote for Kenny’s idea!
Reply to this commentIt provides the most possible desktop space, over 6 megapixels!
Get a bigger desk!
Reply to this commentMaybe the room where the computer is kept is limited on desk space too, lol.
Personally I would go with the 30″ one way or another whether you decide to keep one 20″ as a second or not because as you’ve said before, you always upgrade, never downgrade. Going up to 30″ guarantee that you probably won’t downgrade that monitor. If you happen to have space later on, two 30″ would be badass.
Reply to this commentBuying a new house would solve the not enough room for a bigger desk problem.
Reply to this commentJust get it wall mounted which removes the size of the desk from the equation!
Reply to this commentI would go with 2 24″ monitor too…I think it is more systematic this way
Reply to this commentI’m guessing $10,000 (Because it was a slow month I think….)
Reply to this comment- Ramyond (MONEY BLUE BOOK)
Me too!
Reply to this commentI’ll guess with $11,111
Reply to this commentChoose 2 monitors. It’s more stylish and impressive than 1!
Reply to this commentDepends on what you’re using them for. If you were primarily gaming, I’d say the one 30″ would be nice (assuming you have a couple of beefy video cards in SLI to power it).
Reply to this commentOn the other hand, your unique field of work requires lots of open windows, and I shudder to think of how many IMs you get over the course of the day, so I’d say the two 24s would be best.
I think 1650 x whatever res would look crap on a 30″
Reply to this commentI thought leaving a comment here in the vid would help persuade you
Now that is comment targeting
Reply to this commentVery evil!
Reply to this commentBuy 2 Apple Cinema Displays!
Reply to this commentI’d guess $11,112
I’d go with two monitors, but I use Visual Studio, and like to have code on one screen and tool windows on another. If I was just surfing the web and reading email (or something better suited to one screen) I’d go with the bigger one
But as has been said, 30″ is rather overkill!
Reply to this comment$12,029.40
It’s a cool video, saw it on his blog. Interesting to see the processes people go through with blogging. I’m a lot more “post and be done with it”!
Reply to this commentThat is probably a much more efficient strategy!
Reply to this commentI’d go for the 30” - big is always better!
Reply to this commentHmmm, $9999
Reply to this comment$11,108
30″
Reply to this commentI think your income is over 15.000$ for this month. I”m pretty sure
Reply to this comment$12,500
And definitely use 2 monitors, more real estate and it is handy if you pop a DVD in and watch it on one while blogging on the other.
Reply to this commentI agree, you can open up your email program on one and browse with the other so you never have to switch tasks, it’s all there for you. (I have 3 LCDs now…with the iMAC 24″ and 2 PCs hooked up to 3 PCs! with those virtual terminal things that let you switch between the PCs. Yes, I am wired too and I need it for hacking serious…)
Reply to this commenthere’s a video of it kind of, just watch the beggining and it will show you my screens:

Reply to this commentA Warm Welcome to all John Chow readers @ Daily Moolah dot Com. I look forward to your comments and feed back, and hope you enjoy my what you see on my blog.
I’d guess that John’s income will be around the $14,000 - $16,000 this month. Do I get more free advertising if I’m right John?
Reply to this commentBest Regards,
Dev - Daily Moolah dot Com
A very nice introduction - I hope you got some replies and some traffic. I wouldn’t hold out for any free advertising though!
Reply to this commentIf I have two 24’s, you BETTER have two 30’s! But at the same time, if Al Gore has three Apple Cinema Displays, you better have a fourth!
Reply to this commentWell I’m assuming we are guessing on revenue and not net income because it’s hard to say what your expenses were this month with the redesign.
I’ll guess 14,525
Reply to this comment9750
Reply to this commentI always prefer a 2 monitor setup because then I don’t have to worry about resizing windows to fit within the one monitor, I can just maximize windows on both sides.
That being said, if you upgrade to one 30″ are you going to be giving the others away in another contest?
Reply to this commentReading this makes me feel suddenly inadequate with my one screen!
Reply to this commentUS$13,234,45! Congrats!
Reply to this commentId guess 8963 dollars for august and definently go with 2 monitors, I dont have two monitors exactly but I use my laptop and desktop at once and it really makes things easier to have a giant monitor for general things and a smaller screen for more focused work.
Reply to this commentI loved your Ebook John. I am recommending it to everyone!
I just don’t get how come you still have your Agloco banner. You have 20,000+ reps!!! and no news of income.
I guess $11,000
Reply to this commentHe had a good review me month. It would be bad if did not cross his preview 12k earnings. I am sure if must be around $13500 for Aug month.
Reply to this commentJohns Aug income must be 13,000 $$$$$
Reply to this commentlol i dont even earn $10 a month lol
around 13,000 $$
Reply to this commentIn that case I would prefer 2x 24″
Or get a bigger desk and buy 2x 30″
Reply to this commentMy guess is $13,488.
Your problems are nice to have. My 19 inch monitor keeps getting jealous when I look for bigger monitors on-line.
Reply to this commentMy guess is 13,684.20
Next month will be huge, september is pretty much the start of the advertising season and it ramps up to the holidays, slows down a bit than picks up again, than right before summer it goes crazy again and than summer itself is pretty slow!

Reply to this commentWhat about the 18 cents!?!
Reply to this commentMy guess is $ 13,333
Reply to this commentlike 3″s this month
Get a bigger desk and two 30″ displays John - you really won’t regret it. I’m using a 30″ Apple Cinema Display here, and have the temptation to pick up another at some point in the future.
Either get one 30, or two 30’s and a bigger desk.
Reply to this commentMy guess for August income is $13,259.68
Reply to this commentI say either 1 or 3 monitors. If you go 2 you have the seam right in the middle which is bad. I would go either the 1 30″ or 3 smaller ones (my setup).
Reply to this commentI would like to change my guess to ahem…..1 miiiiiilllion dollars!

Reply to this commentJohn, you’re a money machine! Love your site. Go with the 30″.. it will change your life! Have been using a Sceptre 30″ from Costco for about two years now and pump two macs and a pc through the multiple inputs. Watch High Def in the PIP at the same time, split screen, crank up the monitoring camera in the hallway outside my office, etc. Just can’t pull that off easily when you’re trying to figure out which screen you left your mouse pointer upon.
Have been working your tips on our new social network at Trikepilot Social - Wild Flying Videos and have seen a ten-fold increase in traffic and revenue. You’re my hero!
Check an image of your page on my screen (tons of room!):

Reply to this comment30″ gives you the room to do multiple inputs (two machines), High Def Ditigal OTA PIP signal (watch tv while working), input from security cam or otherwise, and you never have to remember where you left your mouse pointer on the screens. Check out them image of MY SCREEN
Vizio Baby, Vizio. Get a Vizio 30″ for the income from one of your 125×125 monthly ads!
You’re my hero. Using your techniques, I cranked up the traffic and revenue on my Trike Flying Video website tenfold in just one month! Unreal…
Reply to this commentKeep up the great Karma.
spence
John you should turn this into a contest, next month.
I’d guess $14,480. No idea why but hey, why not?
Reply to this commentOh, also, it’s not really the home page that has been taking so stinking long to load, it’s the post pages. Any way you could cut that in half?
Reply to this commentTwo monitors increases productivity by 30%. All companies should make their employees work with double monitors.
Reply to this commentHe could cut down on all the comments posted.
Reply to this commentI think $16,432.
Reply to this commentI would get two. Two are better then one!.
Reply to this commentPretty cool website!
Reply to this commentTotally go with a dual monitor setup. I run two 22″ widescreens now and absolutely love it. A 30″ would be nice but the flexibility and increased resolution of two 24’s would easily win over IMO.
I wish I had went with 24’s instead of the 22’s
Reply to this commentExactly $14,590.27
Reply to this commentHmm…I’m guessing $15,333…seems like you had a good August!
Reply to this commentOK its September now, so what ya earn mate
Reply to this commentI’d definitely recommend two monitors over one. The productivity boost of two monitors is enormous. I’ve always found that too high of a resolution (using one display) makes me spend too much time dragging windows around. A slighter small resolution doubled on two monitors gives you the ability to maximize windows to each monitor.
If you decide on two monitors, Ultramon (http://www.ultramon.com) is a must have!
Reply to this comment10,324$
Now is that CND or USA we supposed to be guessing in now John?
Reply to this commentDoes that matter anymore?
Reply to this commentNope not really, it’s only about a 5% difference now:
1 USD = 1.056 CAN (as of Sept 1st)
Although I still think it’d be nice for you to differentiate though.
Reply to this comment$15,673
Reply to this commentGoing for 2 monitors is always better than one in my opinion. I used to have two monitors, but one was a CRT, hurt my eyes, so now I am back to one…
Two monitors did provide a productivity boost, while I was using them.
Reply to this commentIf you’re graphics card can handle it I would recommend 2x 24 inch ones
Reply to this commentEasily more than $15,000!
2 monitors are always better than 1.
Reply to this commentJohn Im guesing $20,000 or better. Your just that good.
Reply to this commentOh yeah john I think one big monitor is better then two, that way you can do 4 reviews all at the same time. Put one review in each corner:)
Reply to this commentNo wonder John’s going into overdrive on ads this month… he’s needing to feed his desire for ever larger and larger monitors…
Why stop at 30″? Just go the full hog… a 60″ LCD monitor… they must be available… That way he can watch a movie and blog at the same time…
Reply to this commentBuy a new table that’s big enough to fit 2 30″ LCD monitors, then get those LCD monitors.
Voila!
Reply to this comment2×24. If you go for this, definitely get the Dell 2407’s, they’re amazing.
Reply to this commentCongrats John for the month of August.

My guess $12,666 . Since john got evil theme this month
, It should contain evil “666″ also
Reply to this commentA new record, maybe around $15k.
I’ve just bought a 37″ lcd to as my home monitor. Wireless keyboard + mouse whilst reclined on the sofa is the only way to work!
Reply to this commentYou made in the neighborhood of 9,500.00 is my guess. You’ll make more next month. What impact will the google ban have on the site after the next pagerank update though? In other words how much, if any, of your traffic is coming from Google?
136 errors, down from 160 last week, is a good sign. Your tech guy is headed in the right direction. There is apparently a hidden area underneath the bottom of the “popular articles” section, it looks like everything below that is pushed up underneath about 30 pixels due to .css positioning. Although it all lines up on the right visually the code indicates that everything below that point is still wider too. (actually it shows up as wider if you highlight the entire page)
Gotta love code fixing though
Unsolicited advice of the day : run a network wide adbrite cpc campaing. Set your price at 0.05 per click, daily budget at 50.00 and enjoy 1000 visitors per day of highly untargeted visitors who won’t click on your ads. It beats paying 0.50 per click for only 100 visitors who won’t click through with adwords!
Reply to this commentI hope I can reach half of what you are earning now, John.
Reply to this commentWow, this guy is wired! Nice job with the video. I like the part where he was checking Awstats on his web server to check his visitors. That is one thing we the bloggers do right? Always interested in who came by….

Reply to this comment$14,100 is my guess.
And definitely 2 x 24″ panels.

Reply to this commentHeheh it just hit Netscape page1 at the URL I entered
Not bad for just recording what I normally do anyway
Reply to this commentGood to know that the designer has worked on using as minimal images as possible and the cutting down the displayed posts number in the homepage is a sleak move, indeed the smaller the size of the site is the better and faster the spybots can crawl the site.
Hope that I did gave you the hint of the image size (and if thats the case, i hope Nathan doesn’t hate me for that :P)
Reply to this commentIf you used PNG’s instead of JPEG’s, you’d be able to compress/optimize the images with little or no quality decrease.
Reply to this commentI highly recommend you opting for two 24in monitors as opposed to just one 30in monitor. IMO, you can get more done with two big ones over one bigger one.
Also, I think you were in the 12k range again this month as your new blog design hasn’t been in affect for long enough to see any results.
Reply to this commentYea your site feels lighter already
Reply to this commentIt’s a cool video - nicely put together and I like the ending. Clearly a lot of work goes into his posts.
Site is definitely running quicker but I’m still getting the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the page.
Reply to this commentOne LCD should be better… it is more enviroment friendly I would say…
Reply to this commentIt’s nice to see there’s someone on this site that cares about the environment and not just completely about evil money making!
