Monday Odds And Ends

Email Still Down – RedHat Expires

My email has been down for the past few days. The only working emails I have right now is my hotmail and Gmail account. My server admin is looking into the problem but so far haven’t figure out what is wrong. He did tell me that two of the server’s Red Hat license has expired and needs to be renewed. However, I was unable to renew them at because the licenses were purchased through Dell, a RedHat reseller.

A call to RedHat got me the voice mail of Dell’s RedHat rep. I left my information with instructions to call me back. I’m now waiting for that call.

Damn Ping Spammers

We have the comment spammers, now we have ping spammers. Iโ€™ve been getting a lot of pingbacks from spam blogs with nothing but links on them. The links have nothing in common with each other. If the blog has content, the content is complete gibberish and makes no sense at all. The purpose of these blogs is to get pingback links from other blogs. They link the title of your posts and hope to show up in the blog comments as a pingback. Luckily, the spam filter is able to detect most ping spam.

Where Is The Bonanza?

So far, the Q4 Internet Bonanza is starting with a whimper instead of a bang. I have not noticed any great increases in CPC rates from Google. Normally advertisers increase their bids during Q4 because of the holiday shopping season. However, the rate increase this year is not as high as it was last year. I’m hoping this is just a ramp up and we’ll be seeing ad rates increase to the same level as last year.

Banks Have a Deposit Limit

I have to go to the bank today to try to re-deposit a check. I tried depositing this check last Friday at about 7PM (my bank is open till 8PM). However, the bank teller informed me that they can’t accept the check because it exceeded their deposit limit. After 5:30PPM – the official close of the bank business day – a bank can not deposit a check over a certain limit. The limit is different for every bank. For the TD Canada Trust, it’s any check over $25,000. The bank offered to hold the check and have it deposited today but I elected to just take the check back.

Many of my advertisers pay me via wire transfer but this company has so far refused to set that up for me. Not that I mind going to the bank to deposit big checks. Seeing the reaction on the tellerโ€™s face is always fun.

Oopsy. I referenced you twice in my last post about my first month’s blog experiences:

    I hope I didn’t get ping-spam-blocked (say that real fast 3 times).

Also, with regard to your bank and deposit limits…that’s odd. My bank doesn’t have such a thing; however, I’ve heard that about various bank. Makes no sense that they would place a deposit limit when they are trying to grow deposits. Regulatory, schmegulatory.

    Turn off your trackbacks.

I had a lot of problems in the past with bots trying to leave trackbacks on my old posts. I set my blog so that all trackbacks require moderation and any comment on a story over 7 days old also requires moderation.

John, for a big Internet mogul you don’t seem all that knowledgable about the blog you are running.

PS: Can you install a spell checker? I always misspell words when I use these tiny laptop keyboards!

HMTKSteve – That’s because I’m new to blogging. I don’t want to turn off trackback because I want to link to legit pingback. Turning off trackback to kill pingback spam would be like turning off comments to kill comment spam. ๐Ÿ™‚

Where so I get the spell checker plugin?

    I don’t know, I don’t use wordpress ๐Ÿ™‚

and… don’t turn it off, just have it moderated.

I delete at least ten fake trackbacks every day on my blog and I don’t have near the traffic you do!

Also, my blog does not “pingback” to yours no matter what I do.

Pingbacks are moderated. So far, the spam killer has managed to catch every single pingback spam.

You don’t use WordPress? Damn! That’s like saying “I don’t use Windows!” ๐Ÿ˜€

  6. HMTKSteve says:

    Oh, yeah, I don’t use Windows either…

I’m posting this from a Linux box.

  7. Derrich,

I would not be surprised if you were blocked. Your blog is obviously in design and outlook a poor duplicate of

True, this dot com guru is a secret mentor and inspiration to many of us. We would be uttermost failures, if we cannot creatively carve out our peculiarity from his resourceful lectures he gave us here.

Let us be more creative pls.

I don’t want to bea copy of anybody, because, every copy is a counterfeit of the original! I want to be me! Period.

I hate it when this happens. The other day I tried to deposit a check for a bazillion dollars. They tried telling me it was counterfit.
