Welcome To The New JohnChow.com!

Big Idea Mastermind

Well, after over 5 years, I thought it was finally time to update my home page. I’m sure most people were getting sick and tire of my picture splashed across this home page.

For the first time visitor, this site use to be call The Wired World Of John Chow. Now it’s call the John Chow dot Com The Miscellaneous Ramblings of a Dot Com Mogul, because that is what I am – a Dot Com Mogul – and that is what I’ll be doing – rambling.

A little somethinig about me. My name is John Chow (as you no doubt notice from the domain name). I also go by the nick name “Moto”, named after the old video game Moto Racer. I live in Vancouver, Canada pretty much all my life. Before discovering the internet, I was a partner in a local Richmond printing company. After over a decade of running a print shop, I decided it was time for a change, and the internet was where I was going to stake my claim.

On April 1999, I started a little technology site call The TechZone. That site has risen to become one of the largest hardware tech sites on the net. Currently the site has over 10,000 pages and gets over 200,000 page views per day.

Besides taking care of the day to day business at The Tech Zone, I can be seen riding my bike around Vancouver, working out at Fitness World or climbing Grouse Mountain. I am best known for his famous quote “My World! My Rules!” and “Oh well.”

Nice work John – love the site…love to partner on theurbanmale.ca…it’s going to be big…coming June 1st, 2007!

Steven August 22, 2007 at 12:57 pm

It’s now August 22nd, 2007 and a new theme has once again been launched!

Joy August 13, 2008 at 1:36 am

it is happy reading about u….

Enwikopedia August 30, 2007 at 7:31 am

I’ve got to take it to you John. This is a nice first post.

boulet January 30, 2006 at 1:18 pm

Shame your site quality doesn’t match the quantity. Digital Zoom Versus Optical Zoom @ Digital Grabber was ther biggest pile of shite I’ve ever read! Give it up abd go back to printing.

Damien Passehl February 5, 2007 at 1:06 pm

The thing that really saddens me is the fact that people like boulet tend to drift from blog to blog harassing others hard work. It is really sad when you figure in the fact that yeah he probably does have a website and odds are it performs very poorly. Keep up the good work John, Your blog is a killer read!!

Enwikopedia - The Paid Encyclopedia August 30, 2007 at 7:36 am

who on earth is that? Why his name blanked out?

Shaun September 7, 2007 at 7:27 am

He’s making money, and your an idiot. Hahahaha! Pwnt!

John Chow January 30, 2006 at 5:46 pm

boulet, I didn’t write that article, but I’ve been in this business long enough to know that you’ll never please everyone no matter how good you are. So if you don’t like it, that’s fine. I judge success by traffic numbers, not how good someone thinks an article is.

If you think you can do better, then by all means, step up to the plate and show me. I’ll even help you.

Dale Ng February 18, 2007 at 11:11 am

Well said, John Chow. Keep it up.

anz May 3, 2007 at 9:52 pm

just wandering will you make money with your blog if you are living here in the philippines? If so how do you get your money?

Lorie Therese Locara October 9, 2007 at 2:39 am

Hi. :) Well, I have to agree that your “about” page is a tad obnoxious. People do tend to get irritated with others who sound like they feel that they are God’s gift to creation or whatever.

BUT, I do like your content; very helpful, Mr. Chow. :)

As for the question on how people who make money online get their money, PayPal now has receive capabilites. You can access your money through cash advance on a Visa/Mastercard credit card. You may also apply it against your credit balance. You can also withdraw the money through a debit or prepaid card. You can even do the same with any bank account with an ATM that has the Visa/Mastercard logo. :)

There are also other options, like Western Union, Ikobo, Moneybookers, Xoom, and so many other merchants you can make use of, like G-Cash’s Advise and Pay, Moneygram… So many options, really!

My apologies, Mr. Chow, I really just can’t resist telling the skeptics about how netrepreneurs do business. I bookmarked your site, and will be visiting every now and then. More power to you!!!

BlastYourAss.com May 30, 2007 at 4:02 pm

This is why Moto is a good guy. Way to go Mr. Moto.

If people utilized this blog for their benefit then they would be able to explode their blog traffic. But you have to be clever like me to know how.

First time poster here, not sure if the post will show up properly. Besides John Chose, are there other people on this blog who are also making this kind of money on the internet ?

Fez September 26, 2006 at 6:48 pm

Don’t you have to be, like a millionare or something, to be a mogul?

Nice blog though, esp. the “Google Whores” post. I hope we’re both on that list one day =)

bill November 19, 2006 at 6:45 pm

can you build a good price finder for Vancouver and Victoria?

We need one here as its so damn hard to get a deal anywhere.

Michael November 20, 2006 at 12:30 pm

Love the site, your Top 10 Wordpress plugins blog was great. Lose the ads though.

The World hates advertising, even the text kind.

Lady Aeval March 14, 2007 at 11:40 pm

Michael, I must not be “the world” because I don’t hate advertising. What I don’t like are holier than thou types who claim they hate advertising because the Internet has taken their perfect little world away. I used to be one of those types, techie UNIX admin and holier than thou, until I found design in a Mac world using UNIX and now the world rocks.

momo November 21, 2006 at 10:54 am

I personally don’t care about anything else, if you made lots of money, who did you help today? What have you done to give back to those who didn’t have access to the same resources you had.

You seem nice enough, but “…it is easier to pass a camel thru the eye of a needle than a rich man gain the gates of heaven…”. Help someone today, make a foundation that provides education for those who would never have the chance for a formal education. Provide guidance to those who need a guide. There are better things to do than update your blog.

K8 March 21, 2007 at 12:57 pm

I never usually comment on blogs or reply to people who generally don’t have anything good to say, but since we live in a supposedly free speech world – I thought I’ll give it my *more than 2 cents* … particularly since I know I’m not the only one who thought this way.

I’m trying to see the REAL intention of this person’s comment, and though it seems that his intention is to promote charity… one would also think that such a person who goes promoting charity/help/etc. should know that he should not go and solicit people to do it insensitively, nor imply that a person is a certain way or that he can do something better with his time. You’re pretty much saying you’re either better than, or he’s less than (which makes me wonder what it says about you).

Yes, a majority of people are unaware or don’t care and sure we can lead them to a certain direction by providing links, emailing them personally etc etc – RATHER THAN – as you have resorted, publicly commenting on John’s choice of activities and how he wants to spend his time with a touch of subtle disrespect.

Now in saying all of this, someone may blast me and say I don’t know what I’m talking about – but I can only say that actually I don’t know John or even really know his site enough to make any observations about him being “nice enough” as you say. But that the only thing that I observe and wish for anyone in general especially in this “free speech I have to share with you how I feel world” (haha and yes, thats EXACTLY what I’m doing)… is that I would just wish for people to put more effort in their thoughts and basically think before they say anything – is this necessary, is this judgemental, how is this beneficial? is this constructive etc etc.

So yes “Momo”, I’m trying to see your real intention, but since its clouded with your blunt opinion delivered quite insensitively, its really hard to see that.

But hey… you’re probably thinking (or not b/c I doubt s/he will see this again), that “what you think of me is none of my business”. And good for John, that seems to me exactly what he thinks  (though correct me if I’m wrong).

Sabrina March 23, 2007 at 10:43 am

She missed the point of your entire blog, ahem, make money online – I don’t care John Chow – I think your site rawks! I love how people just comment without having any basis in fact.

Rosie Rosie! March 23, 2008 at 5:16 am

Hey Mr Anonymous, who did YOU help today? where are the links to YOUR charities and works of good deeds? And how do you know who John Chow helps – do you live with him? He is a blogger, not Jesus. There are better things to do than sitting anonymously on a computer spouting pointless Bible quotes. – Thou shalt not envy. There’s some guidance.

Yomama November 21, 2006 at 4:55 pm

John,
Congrats on your success with your Tech Website. I just found out about you on Wickedfire. I also live in vancouver. So it is great to see a somebody living in your area making it big.

Michael November 27, 2006 at 6:30 pm

Wow, i’ve been reading your blog and didn’t even realize your from Vancouver.

lee December 3, 2006 at 11:07 am

John, great site! I’ve only been reading it for a few days, and I’ve already learned a lot. Thanks for sharing! I’m a little blown away by the negative comments, though. Momo needs to get a life! As for providing guidance, you’re doing it! I’m a blogging newbie. I’m writing a book and plan to use blogging as part of my marketing. Your site has helped me a great deal in understanding what blogging is about. You, your site, The Tech Zone, etc. is also of great inspiration to me. God Bless!

John,

I haven’t read through your site yet as I’m in the midst of exams. However, on a first glance I am very happy to see a fellow canadian doing well for himself.

I’m in T.O. btw.

Back to studying, i’ll be back in the new year :)

Elizabeth December 16, 2006 at 6:23 pm

I have just been fired, Dec 11 and I am going through a rough time because I found my dream company, earning money that I thought I would ever earn here in Canada and had planned to pay my depbt and put a may be biy a small condo.

I am heavily in debt and low on moral. I have strugled over the past 13 years, contant lookimg for jobs. Moving from company to company after contracts and sometimes in search of better salary.

I have skills, and I think I am good at what I do. But the turmoil within is too much to burden.

I need help with my debt and just finding a career path. I am tired to the very core of my being.

John, can you help?

sal December 19, 2006 at 12:43 pm

Now the million dollar question is, will you help poor elizabeth above escape her predicament ?

She needs you john, she’s tired to the very core of her bieng, and you seem like a good man.

Thanks

Elizabeth December 19, 2006 at 12:58 pm

I will help. I have been helping as soon as I left University. I can’t recall not sending part of my pay check to needy relatives — this is a burden that some immigrants carry through out their life span.

I am surfing internet for money making resources, and first suggestion from many sources was to create a web site. I did it. Now it was time to make it popular, and again searching. During this 2 and half year of time I realized that nobody gives you free informations until I cam to some blogs. And to my surprise, every thing was there. And to be honest, most of the opportunities, suggestions were free and legit.

I am proud to say that few months ago I started my first blog. And happy to be a blogger, because this is the place, where you can survive by sharing.

Your blog is one of the inspirational blogs, which are a milestone for new bloggers like me.
I am going to link your blog at my blog.

Hey John,

I started a blog just last week and I came across your website from one of the ads haha, anyway… how do you do it? Right now I wouldn’t mind 50 CPD, I want to know how I could improve.

I live in Vancouver Langley I am currently attending a university called Trinity Western. And I am interested in either having a talk with you through e-mail or whatnot, if you could give me a msg that’d be great!

I am currently working full-time for the summer here in Hong Kong in a company called ISL. I do adverts, photography, html scripts, editting and other unimportant things hahaha… but yeah, i was looking through a lot of your stuff and you’re amazing with what you do.

Yours,

Hi John,

Every successful entrepreneur has a story. It’s nice to hear yours. Inspiring and motivating for beginners like myself.

Wish you success in your endeavors.

Nick August 13, 2007 at 9:24 am

Hi John,
Thanks for all the advice you give to the community! I’ve been involved in IM for the last 2 years but have been really getting in to it since May. I’ve been reading anything I can find on the subject and your site (and your free “make money online” e-book which I’ll review on my site soon) is one of my resources.
Keep up the good work, congratulations on all of your success (both personal and professional), and thank for being an encouragement to people like me!
Nick

Okay, so I’m jealous, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Some day, I hope to be yanking down some bucks on my blog too. I’ll probably have to start a whole new blog and change my name or something, but it could happen. (couldn’t it?) Anyway, your blog rocks! I’ll be back.

John,

hello Mr.John Chow..am much junior to you and you can call me a newbie in blogging stuff..what prompted me to start blogging for promoting my money making sites was the concept and the wide range of opportunities in blogging and then after a certain period creating a website..i really wish to make one but am still not sure about what? ..i think its normal for an aspiring newbie.. ..i read many of your posts and they were really informative and i thank you for continuing your writing on your site too with frequent updates as your site is serving as a guide for newbies like me..keep up the good work…!!i wish to achieve what i aim for which is nothing more than promoting engineers e-books and guidelines for aspiring MBA students..and for the funds to start that website and other required things i joined various money making programs and never thought they will make it that big..!! ..i truly believe internet is something worth of your free time….i’ll always be looking upon your site to have some basics cleared about blogging and you may not know but many of my crew members are your regular visitors too  …so once again..keep posting and rocking..!!

rey October 26, 2007 at 6:11 am

I’m new in blogging and I love this job. By just observing your site, I am indirectly learning a lot while wondering what’s ahead of my effort in this new adventure. Congratulations for having such great income. It’s nice to have that… but it’s really for you… it’s your destiny… On my part, I don’t have my own website at this moment though I like really to have – I just have my sub-domain which is practically free for blogging. But you can be a model for this new adventure I choose. God bless!

One Buck Wiki November 1, 2007 at 1:37 am

Hi John!
Great blog post. I think sincerity and honesty is why I read this blog everyday. The real thing that got me interested about you was the fact the you were contestent for Ultimate Fighting Championship. (Do you have any videos of this by the way?)

Money Blue Book November 10, 2007 at 4:17 pm

Wow you’ve really come a long way since this time…the template has completely changed and your income has completely surged to unprecedented levels. Interesting to see how it got started though.

John Motson November 11, 2007 at 6:35 pm

Wow John,

Congrats on your success!
I’ve been hearing about John Chow everywhere I go, so I had to come check it out for myself.
Man you are a true inspiration to up-and-coming bloggers like myself. Do keep it up!

I love your about page, hehe way to get a lot of reactions… the funniest are the people trying to put you down because they think you have a high opinion of yourself :) .

In the end, what’s wrong with having a high opinion of one self?
( I know you were joking, but still ). Thanx again for inspiring me to work harder on my blogs and good luck in all your future ventures!

John

Gerard November 17, 2007 at 8:13 am

i haven’t really gone halfway reading your blog. i run over 6 community sites which i juggle with med school. am only earning around $500 in a month and it’s terrible, demanding work. i have a new community which has a medical theme. i’m now gonna read your blog and see if finally taking advantage of my education as opposed to running “gothic communities” would serve me well online. the site is at MEDLYF.COM but i just realized the irony of how much harder it is to convince fellow asians with a medical background to join it. it sucks. if it were another goth site of mine i would have jumpstarted it in no time with traffic. but right now i’m treading in a familiar territory, but which betrays my expectations.

i really hope i could upgrade my earnings from reading your blogs as my internet life is starting to jeopardize my real life as a 3rd medical student.

Hello John. I wanted to take a moment to congratulate you on your success. I read your article in the Feb. 08 issue of Entrepreneur Magazine and it really inspired me to follow my passion to become an Entrepreneur/Philanthropist. I have never blogged before, infact this is the first time I have ever done it in all my 24 years! anyway, was wondering if you had any helpful tips and advice on how to start with basically nothing…(I’ll be working at godaddy.com on may 5th! and seriously never want to go back to broke.) and do what you have done. Also want to start investing. Thank you for being an inspiration to us. God bless and much success!

You know, you have a shitload of javascript errors on your site. As a developer I have script debugging enabled and each javascript error pops up a message box. On this page alone, I had to hold down the N key just to get passed all of the errors. I am not sure what percentage of your readership is developers… You may want to considering spending some time on the issue.

Well done John, whilst there are a lot of informational blogs in the blogosphere there are few that go out of their way to help the newbies come to grips with the painstaking task that lays ahead of them. I fully commend you on your efforts and your supporters & critics are a vital aspect of blogging. The good’s far outweight the bad and at this rate, you’re going to leave most of them behind and they’ll never quite come to grips with what they missed. It appears to me that you are totally focused and that shows a strong inclination for newcomers to feel welcomed whilst at your site. There are few mentors willing to teach but a lot of procastinators who want us to bend to their logic at our dismay.
I’m not in Canada…No, I am in Western Australia but my Grandchildren live in Oshua. Thank You
