Last week, I sat down (well, more like had a Skype conference) with Murray Newlands of PMI-TV. Murray wanted to get my opinion on the Pay Per Click business model and why I think it’s more of a game than a real business model.
John Chow is probably one of the most famous bloggers in the performance marketing and affiliate marketing game. Murray Newlands sat down with John Chow this past week to ask what was working with affiliate marketing and we found that he believes that many affiliates are just wasting money to make a few bucks here and there. According to him, media buying is not a business model and is nothing more than a game that will not make you money long term.
Reading the comments over at Performance Marketing Insider, it looks like half strongly agrees with me, and the other half strongly disagree. What do you think?

One of the most common complaint (or excuse) I hear from potential new bloggers is they don’t know how to install WordPress. Terms like FTP and CPanel are like a foreign language and setting up a database might as well be setting up the space shuttle for a launch. Because of the technology barrier, many would-be bloggers never start their blogs...

Wow, you called it a game, well now I know why you don’t use PPC much.
uhmm, i have learnt a lot from how to build personal brand and delvelop social network around ideas .
Nice interview John, It is very cool that you were interviewed at performance marketing insider.
Building a loyal subscriber based is the answer! I have been thinking about that lately as well. Your interview confirms it for me!
Thanks John.
Hey,John
I think it is but isn’t a game.I think it is a game because it’s all about getting the most quality traffic which is like competing with someone to win all the money.
But then I think on the other hand it isn’t a game because you have to work
hard for traffic which could be frustrating and time consuming.
All together,I think it is a game and not because you compete with your competitors but it can be frustrating and time consuming gathering what you need to succeed.
Thanks For Sharing John,

I agree with John even though I drive paid traffic to affiliate offers myself….BUT…you can’t build a brand out of thin air. You need funds to do that, and the quickest way to get cash flow is through paid traffic campaigns in my opinion. Even if you don’t agree with the business model, you can make $100k within 5-6 months, stop and then try to build something more solid from the profits you made.
Awesome John!!
And, thanks to Murray for hosting just a great interview.
Thank you
Great interview. Very insightful tips on the industry.
