New Blog Milestone - 10,000 RSS Readers

written by John Chow on October 18th, 2007

It’s amazing what a little competition can do to a RSS count. At the start of this month, my FeedBurner counter showed 8,585. Today, it’s showing 10,315 RSS readers. Not bad at all.

I noticed Shoemoney pulled out the big guns yesterday with the announcement of $13,000 in prizes for his RSS contest. That post ballooned his RSS counter to a impressive 12,591, from 10,833 at the start of the month.

Shoe should be worry. You figure he would pull massively ahead after that kind of announcement but when the FeedBurner chicklet updated last night, I gain more new readers than he did. I am now trailing by just 28 readers. I fully expect to take back the lead after tonight’s update.

This Friday, I’ll be rewarding some prizes to readers who subscribed to the RSS by Email. There are five pages on the Million Euro Wiki up for grabs as well as two copies of An American Hedge Fund and two $25 Barnes & Noble gift cards by Shaun Carter. In addition, Team Tutorials has offered a $100 New Egg Gift Certificate. All will be given away this Friday. subscribe now to enter. Good luck.

Enter your email address:

*Update - As I predicted, I have taken lead back from Shoemoney.

Pulling what?

You’ll win this John although you may have to make your design somewhat uglier. Shoe’s got the wood on you there as I wouldn’t want to visit that web page every day.

Referring to the sneaky, post someone else’s feedburner chicketlet to gain more subscribers tactic?

Yea, how do I know your not using my chicktlet as your 11K RSS readers John? Oh thats right. Because I don’t have 11,000 subscribers. YET

Congratulations on 10K. It’ll be interesting to see how high you can get it.

I was wondering what happened to the blog challenge from a couple of months ago. You know, the one where you were going to start a new blog annonymously and try to make it proffitable. Is that still ongoing or did it get put on the back burner?

Although I am only envious about the large number of subscribers, considering that shoe and john are both encouraging people to subscribe effectivley numerous times - is the gain a real gain or just fudging the numbers, cause I can easily create a feedburner chicklet saying 20,000 without much effor at all - without going through all of this

Sorry John, but some of your number are wrong. You are ahead just by percentage (You gained 13.8% users and he just 12.2%), but he gained 122 more users than you.
Where did you get your starting numbers? Feedburner says that you had 9063 Readers on the 1st October.

As usual, you can check the numbers on my blog.

We agreed with what FeedBurner displayed at the start of the month. http://www.johnchow.com/john-chow-vs-shoemoney-rss-competition/

Don’t know where you got the 9063 readers from. I was at 8585 on Oct 1 and Shoe was at 10833.

maurizio said on October 19th, 2007 at 10:12 am

Ok. I will correct my stats. BUT you both are mistaken. I mean you decided to take 30th sept as starting date then.

The stats on my blog comes from feedburner. Check here:
http://api.feedburner.com/awareness/1.0/GetFeedData?uri=http://feeds.feedburner.com/JohnChowdotCom&dates=2007-10-1
http://api.feedburner.com/awareness/1.0/GetFeedData?uri=http://feeds.feedburner.com/JohnChowdotCom&dates=2007-09-30

As you can see from the links, the number is from the day before. Tell this to Shoemoney, maybe you need to clarify this or you can fight about it at the end of the contest :-)

Or just leave it like that. It’s not that important when you start..but when you end should be very important. Use Feedburner date to get the right end date.

Won’t these contests that push up RSS counts reduce quality of your RSS readership? I mean if some of these are self-updating type RSS’s readers that would show up in your count, then they would dilute the ad value of the RSS readers.

I don’t know, I heard rumors that shoemoney has a surprise $10,000 grand prise drawing, I think this would probably draw a lot more members considering your odds are like 1:300 or in that range of winning.
