I’ve been thinking about switching my blog over to word press. I’m attracted by the extended feature set it seems to have but considering I’m not web savvy enough, I’m wondering if its worth the hassle. How you you explain the word press experience to someone that has ever been a web publisher?

I like the service I’m using now because it has a great GUI back end.

Still using the “old Blogger” for now, switching over to the “New Blogger” won’t work for my blog, I get some message that it says it will take a while for changes or some crap.

I’ve used Wordpress for another site that I had, and I must say it is really easy to use.

Maybe try getting a free wordpress.com hosted blog to play around with it? That way you will know if it’s for you or not.

The only thing you don’t get with the wordpress.com blog is the ability to add your own plugins and themes. But those are basically just files you upload and turn on.

For now I like the new blogger. Although I use the old blogger template

What is the time period on your top commentators? I suddenly dropped off but noticed that a lot of the people who are on the top commentators list have less total comments than me. Is it a weekly cycle?

What I seriously don’t like about Blogger is that is requires one to have a Blogger account to comment.. I would usually skip over any such blogs, knowing that I wouldn’t be allowed to participate.

I wonder what exactly those “security” features are…

I saw there was a new WordPress update from my Dashboard, I’ll need to upgrade soon.

It is a good idea to keep up to date on the releases when running the various blogging/CMS solutions. At times it can seem to be monotonous but as John mentions, try to install security updates as soon as possible.

I wonder what impact this release will have in terms of plugin and theme compatibility. I haven’t seen much talk about this yet.

Can anybody point me to a Wordpress - Blogspot comparison ? Any big differences that make one better than the other ?

Assuming you were on one of the more recent 2.0.x releases, I don’t think the plugins/themes will be impacted too much.

I’ve been going through mine and haven’t found anything yet that has been a problem (knocking on wood).

For those wondering about switching to their own Wordpress or other self hosted blog/cms, I highly recommend you look into it. It gives you so much more flexibility in layout, features, and deep customization if you’d like.

Patching to latest versions is a must however.

I haven’t used Wordpress personally, as I started out with Drupal, but from what I gather it’s quite straight forward, and is definitely worth learning.

StrnageProgress, WordPress is no doubt useful and easy to learn, I’m not using it myself either because (imho) it lacks the extendability of the CMS i’m using right now (MODx).

John - Sometimes, overwriting (instead of delete and upload) can go wrong. Ftping might not overwrite completely. I had that problem during my 2.0.5 upgrade.

I took a look at the word press site last night. I think ill take your advice Gareth and try a regular account first. If i like it I’ll start another site with it and then decided if i wanna switch my blog over. It seems word press is the standard for hosting your own blog, and every site I go to seems to be word press friendly.

Wordpress took less than 5mins to set up when I was playing with it one day. I was actually using it only to figure out how I could make a plugin for my RecentPost Dynamically Created Image for Wordpress.

A friend of mine showed me the backend to Wordpress for his site and I must say everything is layed out really nice.

But like other posts if you want to play with it to see if it is for you check out Wordpress.com. They host it for you. If you like it and want to use it I would suggest obtaining your own domain name, hosting it on your own site and downloading the wordpress.org version.

My site is custom made and it’s backend isnt as extensive as Wordpress but I’m happy with what I have and if I need to add something/customize something I can.

My blog has had a host of problems, and still has a few, that I wonder how most people figure out. I consider myself extremely tech savvy, so I usually just drill down straight into the code to fix the problem, but what about the people who don’t write PHP or MySQL etc? How would they go abouts fixing these problems? I’ve searched up on WordPresses’ support database and most of the tickets are from last year which looks like a time period with a much different wordpress version.

Hopefully this version of wordpress will fix a problem I’m not looking forward to fixing /rant

Ed - No you don’t. Those changes will be maintained.

Well I’d think that would depend on what files were changed. I mean if you’re just uploading and overwriting all the Wordpress files, some changes could be lost.

Of course one could always just grab a CVS diff file and manually apply the changes.
