On The Cover of The Ming Pao Magazine
written by John Chow
When the Ming Pao, one of the biggest Chinese language newspapers in the world, contacted me for an interview, I had no idea they were going to put me on the cover of their magazine. The Ming Pao magazine is part of the Saturday edition of the Vancouver and Toronto Ming Pao newspaper. I am not sure if it will be going into any other editions of the Ming Pao.

Getting the cover is my biggest tier 1 media coup to date. The Ming Pao magazine is read by over 140,000 Chinese reader in Vancouver every week. I’m sure the Toronto edition reaches more. Unfortunately, I can’t read Chinese so I have no idea what it says. My wife skimmed the five page article during today’s Dot Com Pho and told me it’s very detail and more focus on my life than any of the other newspaper or magazine articles about me. No doubt the Ming Pao took this line because I am Chinese.

If you live in Toronto or Vancouver and can read Chinese, maybe you can pick up a copy and tell me what it said. I’m sure Sarah will translate the article for me later.

Ming John Pao Chow (well thats the translation I would come up with). A pitty you don’t know what it is said, and I bet they will write again about you John, with the title: John Chow, the Chinese that doesn’t know Chinese
Nasty…no?
Congrats John
John is blessed, cause he can also count on an immense(in terms of numbers) background. It doesn’t matter much if he doesn’t speak Chinese
I doubt John doesn’t speak Chinese, he might simply not read Chinese (it is a complicate alphabet). But are you trying to tell me that it doesn’t matter if you don’t know your mother language? Do you think before you write or what?
Cool down.
are they Japanese?
No need to get personal by statements such as “Do you think before you write or what?”
It is surprising to me that someone could be Chinese without being able to read their mother tongue as is the case for John Chow [who wrote: "Unfortunately, I can’t read Chinese so I have no idea what it says. So let’s all be kinder towards one another and try to bring peace one to another instead of bickering.
Otherwise, you might find the WebMaster will cut off your record setting comments posting with the sword of a samurai…..
Sorry, John. You know what I try to convey.
Keep up the good work.
Even tho it is reasonable if a Chinese who left his country when he was 7 (read John’s comment bellow) can’t read Chinese (i repeat, it is a difficult alphabet, not a easy thing to learn) it is not reasonable to state “It doesn’t matter” (i don’t know, I might have been educated in a wrong way).
Said that, i have respect for John, and i was just teasing him with that line that I said, but Konturas comment really did not made any sense (at least to me).
As far as it regards the comment score, that is not the reason WHY i comment (i would actually prefer a chat room instead)
I dont know German or Gaelic
I can speak Chinese, I just can’t read it. I came to Canada when I was seven and went right into the English school system.
Ah no worries, i was just teasing you. I love languages (wish I knew at least how to say Hi in chinese) and some what I have respect for mother language, so as i said, i was just teasing you and not to cause a discussion.
Very kewl John! More readers = your cash!
It says:”We wanted to interview the cow, but ended up with chow”
Second best isnt that bad for a cover though
This cow is just amaze me everyday he even knows chinese!
Congrats on the mag cover, but too bad you don’t know what they had to say hehe
John in radio, magazines and tv shows. When would you let me to conduct an interview with you regarding experience of contextual advertising programs?
I do have plenty of things to ask you.
Congrats John! I guess you really are a Dot Com Mogul.
Wow, that’s huge.
Congratulations.
Great! Use Google translate
Or Babelfish
Media coverage is quite an honor, especially outside of your own media type. From web to print is a big leap. Great Job! Hope your wife can translate all of it.
Very nice progress, John. It’s always good when the print world gets ahold of you (in a positive light)
Congratulations.

Always nice to see good success. I am always encouraged to read such blog articles.
Best wishes for a good sunday, and keep up the good work.
Congrats! Also one part of the article says ” John Chow, visits his comment writers blogs and posts comments on theirs as well ”
Once again congratulations!
Ritu >> That must be a mistake, because he hasn’t commented on mine, and I would certainly feel honoured if a person like John Chow ever paid a visit to my blog. His comments would, no doubt, be as incisive and constructive as his fine articles on his blog.
He’s also never commented on mine, and mine’s better than his
I bought a Ming Pao today in Toronto, but you weren’t on the magazine. That magazine here is called Ming Pao Saturday Supplement instead of Ming Pao Magazine.
I was told the article would be syndicated to the Toronto Ming Pao. I guess it didn’t show up on today’s edition.
Gongrats to Cow, ups Chow
for getting on the front page
wow, you should be on some more mainstream tv soon.
John,

Yes, the interview was done last week.

It was a long photo session.

Congrats Mr. Chow! I never knew you were Chinese, I thought you were Korean. Learn something new everyday.
He is a celebrity now..
“Blog celebrity.’ John CHow.. maybe popular than Jackie Chan…
Maybe after this he will appear on commercial tv…
This is like a delirious life moment for me because finally there’s something I’ve done that John hasn’t….
I’m surprised that’s your biggest media coup John, you could seriously get so much more coverage than that.
You just have to understand that most media don’t look for stories, they wait for the stories to come to them
I wrote this article on Feb:
7 things you need to know about getting your business into the media.
I’ve learnt more since then…. But I was on the national news on all major channels in Australia, on the morning shows the day after, on all the major radio stations in Australia. (Literally. It was a very, very tiring process.)
Then the international media picked up on it and BBC reported it, The Guardian in London wrote about it.. I made front page of New Zealand’s biggest newspaper (they didn’t even call me for an interview so I found this one out 3 weeks later..!)
Jeff Crilley’s book Free Publicity is tiny but absolute gold. I would recommend it to anyone. I know I can easily replicate what I did into another national story given the right circumstances.
You could easily parlay your experience in blogging into national tv in Canada.
So could Darren Rowse for that matter.. hmm….
Oh by the way John I’m making money online thanks a lot to your help and others such as Kumiko and Maki, I’m currently doing US30-50 every day so am grateful for the help, it’s helping me pay my way to Spain for a visit for 3, 4 months
And when I get there I don’t need to have as much $ as other people because I have an online income!
God bless the internet
Old Chinese men are probably reading the article and yelling and pointing at him because he doesn’t have a real job
so true, so true. lol.
LOL
LOL … the good ol’ days
Internationally recognized. That’s just awesome dude
