I get lots of gifts from companies during the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show. Most gifts are branded item so I get a reminder that I visited those companies while at the show. Some gifts are really nice and some are, well, junk. Normally I leave the junk behind in the hotel and let house keeping get rid of it. Then I remember the old saying, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure. With that in mind, I’ve decided I would give away the gifts that I have no use for.
Our first piece of junk up for grab is a gift from ECS. The is the company that flew me to Taiwan and China all expenses paid, but when it came to giving me a CES gift, all they can managed was a fountain pen and a 128 Meg USB flash drive. I didn’t know they still make flash drives that small!

The contest is really simple - just add John Chow dot Com to your Technorati favorites and you are entered. If you already have this blog in your Technorati favorites, then you don’t have to do anything. Right now, the blog is favorited by 68 members, so your chances are winning are 1 in 68 (for now).
On Monday, I will draw a random name from all the Technorati members who have this blog in their favorites and that person will win a nice pen and flash drive. It comes in a nice black box too.
*Update - The winner will be announced in a new post, and if they have a blog, a link to their blog will also be posted.

Good idea on giving away the “junk”. What other loot bags did you get from CES?

John - That is an ‘innovative’ way that you have come up for to part with the junk.
Though I think, the link you might get on Technocrati might be way more beneficial to you than the ‘junk / treasure’ I might get in return !
John Chow you clever dog…..im guessing the winner will be ‘featured’ on here? or at least have a mention?
Even though it’s just 128mb, it still looks nice
I don’t do any of that bookmarking stuff.. so I won’t be entering this, nice idea though.
I’ve added you but please hang on to it if I do win!
That is a nice price for the 1 that has you in their favs on technoratie, I have
hope I will be the lucky one, than you can send something to the netherlands :p
I picked up some 64MB USB thumb drives from Staples last week for about $5 each on clearance. They do not hold much but… I still remember the days when a 10MB hard drive meant you were super-cool!
Yet another brilliant example of your skills at building your rankings and popularity. Just added your site to my favorites and noticed you are now up to 80 members.
I will bite I was looking for some tech antiques:p
And yeah I live in Australia so I may actually until something really heavy comes up
Very nice, I’ve had you in my favorites for a while already, so no action from my side is required. That USB stick is indeed pretty small, but I wouldn’t mind receiving a free one - I’m still using a 64MB one right now, I didn’t require much space until a while ago, only documents are on it most of the time
Hi, I like your website. I saw it a few days ago. I don’t remember from where. Anyway, you’ve got a hair cut of a man from the northern part of China. Classic Beijing man’s hair-cut.
You’ve got 84 now.
Oh, and what kind of random number generator will you be using?
Woo 128Mb, I’d guess it go with my collection of 32, 64, 128, 256, 512 ones I have laying around at my desk here at work.
Though it is pretty and has ECS on it
Throw in a mention in one of your posts and I’m in.
Arrr what the hell, technorati favorites don’t cost anything, you’re added!
Great, now everyone is going to start doing bribe contests for Technorati favorites. Congratulations on making their ranking system illegitimate. Not that I hold it against you.
I do not think favorites affects yout technorati rank, only links do.
There is a separate top 100 page based only on favorites. If favorites meant nothing why would Chow want them?
John, you’re evil.
Luckily you’re already on my technorati favourites.
Haha what else you got? What would I do with a 128 MB one?
This man is the devil.
Got anymore pens, John?
What other junk do you have to give away?
[...] 2. “Have a contest”. John Chow is an example of a blogger that uses contests all the time. He currently offers a crappy fountain pen and USB flash drive if you add him to your Technorati favorites AND am lucky enough to be chosen as a winner. No thanks, John. You could however, do something similar. Offer a cash prize (it works all the time) for something in return..maybe get some innocent readers to review your very excellent blog? Or you could do it the easy way: Write a post and set up a poll to get a feel of what your readers want. [...]
Cool contest - very clever John. But does it help your Technorati ranking if more people have your blog as a favorite?
“Favorited by: 107 members”
By the way, you’ve broken into the Technorati Top 1000 - congratulations! I’m sure you’ll be able to brake into the Top 100 by the end of the year
Niiiice
Hey John maybe you should sign it as well, since you’re such a celebrity. I bet most of us will be adding you to the technorati favs just for the backlink
John strikes again
Hey next time, maybe you can have us as “slaves” to do your evil bidding for more treasures.
you .. . . .you. . .forget it! you really have been bribing us reading your blog. . .first the backlinks for google, then this technocrati thingy. . .you are onto sumthing very ambitious…planning to become a google whore or sumthing? unluckily(maybe luckily :-)] i am not a technocrati user. . .

Another good johnchow.com promotion idea from John Chow.
Once again another great idea John, and especially a great way to bring more attention to your site.
This should be a great year for your blog!
W00t! Free stuff.
Seeing the amount of interest your post has generated I am sure you have quite a few members to make your lucky draw from - when are you doing that ?
The draw is on Monday.
Mmmm…I already have a usb flash drive…
Haha…nice one John. I’ve entered.
Consider yourself technorati-favoriteded - everyone loves free stuff!
Dam you and your evil schemes
Matt
Oh hopefully I’m the winner! A perm-link from John’s blog could help with a bit o traffic. Though looking over my stats I do get a fair amount of traffic from here.
Youre on there bud!!! cant wait.
[...] I plan to give away most of the booty haul to blog readers over the next few weeks. The first contest has already started. If you haven’t gotten in on it, better do so now. [...]
LOL
Added your blog
This is a great marketing idea john, to give that away for adding your blog to everybodies favorites, it got me thinking, i need to hold an action as this to on mine
[...] Someone said something or other about John Chow which led me to this post at his site titled “One Man’s Junk is Another Man’s Treasure.” I never read blogs like John Chow dot com so until now I never knew that such blog entries existed. If you haven’t taken the moment to go and read it, I’ll explain it in short. [...]
haha…I still use a 128 Meg Flash Drive. I keep getting heat from friends, but will I given to the upgrade, heck no…
Today’s the day!
[...] Congrats goes out to Eric Meeks of Modern Self. Eric is the proud new owner of an ECS fountain pen and 128MB USB Flash Drive. Eric’s name was drawn from the 184 people who had me in their Technorati favorites. Thanks go out to everyone who entered the contest. [...]
[...] It just goes to show how popular his blog is. Funny thing is, there have been over 120 bloggers who have written a review of John Chow Dot Com in order to get a link to their blog and all I did was post a video! In all fairness though, John’s blog is a fantastic read (although the people at Digg don’t seem to think so, but that’s another story), especially if you have time to browse through the archives there are some brilliant tips and it’s very entertaining - one of the few blogs I actually frequent every day. It wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up in the Technorati Top 100 eventually, especially with his crafty linkbaiting schemes!! [...]
