Playing With My Food

written by John Chow on March 2nd, 2007

How many times have your mom told you not to play with your food? Well, she may change her mind if she saw what I had for dinner. Either that or she’ll faint. Some will no doubt use the following video as proof that I am the root of all evil. Not only do I slay baby pandas, but I also torment poor helpless lobsters by showing them what their insides looks like.

The lobster is served raw. Well, the tail is served raw. They separate the lobster between the head and tail, cut up the tail meat and serve it to you while the lobster is still alive (no doubt wondering where its tail is). This proves to the dinners that the lobster is fresh.

After you consume the raw tail (which is really good), they take the lobster away and fry it so you can go after the claw meat.

After finishing that, they take it away one more time and use its skeleton as the flavor based for a soup.

Nothing goes to waste!

In asian countries, most seafood animals are brought to the customers for ‘inspection’ to ensure that they are fresh, lively and kicking before they consume them. That was the way to show that they were ‘fresh’.

Reply to this comment
Michael Kwan said on March 3rd, 2007 at 3:20 pm

Not just Asian countries. Here in Vancouver, if you go to a Chinese restaurant and order live king crab, crab, lobster, etc., they’ll typically bring it to you fresh from the tank for inspection.

May I point out that Lobsters don’t have feelings because their nervous system is not as developed?

Any animal that is primitive enough to survive while having its flesh hacked out is not advanced enough to feel disrespected, or feel pain or agony. They simply consist of reflexes through hormones and signals. There’s nothing to respect.

Oh, all the things people to do feel self-righteous.. animal rights, SPCA.. gahhh. There are people starving out there, damn it.

Agree. All the carbs and fats will make a layer of glue like substance covering the inner wall of the intestine, preventing the absorption of nutrient, and putting more toxin into the body. Adding the high sugar content drink and we get a perfect ingredient for  big O word.

I dont think i could ever eat a live animal. I personally think that animals should be killed humanely and as quick as possible. Usually with a lobster that means a very sharp point of a knife directly into the head.

Cutting the lobster in half and have it squirm about at your table is a little sick if you ask me.

Lobsters probably actually don’t feel pain and the best way to cook them is to throw them live into a pot of boiling water.

You people are giving these creatures feelings and personalities…like we’re eating something with human traits but the reality is, these are animals and they are here for us to eat. Whether or not we do so while they’re still alive seriously doesn’t matter.

THe mid-section, where all the flesh is, is hacked and cut into nice thin strips of sashimi.

The fish head is still alive, and the gill will flap, and its eyes will move.

Alternatively, if you put it water that is a temperature that is “comfortable” for the lobster and slowly increase the temperature to boiling, the lobster will not struggle at all. It’s the sudden change in temperature that puts it on alert.
