Raising 16 Children

written by John Chow on April 16th, 2006

I’m watching this show on TLC right now call Raising 16 Children. It’s about a couple trying to raise 16 children. I guess they couldn’t come up with a fancy title for the show. The children range in age from new born to 17. That means this mom has been pregnant for like 17 years, starting from age 21.

What shocked me was their grocery budget. You figure with 18 people in the house, including the parent, their monthly grocery bill would be in the thousands. Well it is in the thousands but not that much - they only spend $1,500 to $2,000 a month on grocery. Damn, I use to spend that much each month just eating out! Then again, if that family ate out everyday, I’m sure they’ll spend more than me. :)

I hope the parents are dot com moguls like you. How can anyone afford that much money just for food? And you cant put that many people in a tiny house either…..

The mom is a stay a home mom (no kidding). As far as I know all the income is made by the dad, who is a real estate agent. He must sell a lot of houses.

I think it’s awesome that somebody can have that many children and love them equally. It’s interesting to see that many kids and not be in debt. If you can afford it, and you want that many kids well then go for it…

I don’t think it’s awesome at all. It’s the taxpayer buying those groceries really…
