Road To Lincoln Nebraska

written by John Chow on June 29th, 2008

Here’s a little video I made on my way to Lincoln Nebraska for the Top Affiliate Challenge that will start tomorrow. At first, I thought I was going to be flying for half a day because the ticket information said I would fly out at 11:30AM and get to Nebraska but 7:00PM. However, I forgot there was a two hour time zone difference between Vancouver and Nebraska.

The flights were pretty uneventful except for the landing. The Midwest seems to have some very high winds that makes for quite a bumpy take off and landing. However, once you’re at cruising attitude, everything was very smooth.

My impression of Nebraska so far is, it’s very flat and there sure is a lot of corn. I’m waiting to come across my first cow. I’m sure I can get a funny video out of that.

I’ve always heard that you can’t film inside of airports due to them thinking you are a terrorist scout. Guess that’s only true for the US.

You just can’t film around security check points, I’m pretty sute any other area is okay.

I shot this video inside the old CN train station. When I was done, a security guard approached me and said no pictures please, not realizing that I had already shot a video on my Flip. (The Flip does look like a camera instead of a camcorder.)

My Mum always takes loads of film in the aeroplane and around the airport - she gets so excited when her holiday starts she has to film everything!

Rant - How much of that corn is being diverted to Bush-subsidized ethanol production and causing high corn prices leading to food riots in 30 countries including Mexico (high tortilla prices) and Italy (high pasta prices)? Food inflation will affect us all, including fine diners.

Some restaurants are not giving out free bread anymore. Others are adding more exotic meats (like buffalo, ostrich), which are cheaper to buy, but can still charge a premium for them.

New menus = new prices. (I’ve encountered this quite a bit in the last few months.)

If they don’t want to import Brazil ethanol they should at least copy the model and stop using corn to produce fuel.

If you find a cow, go back early in the morning and do a little cow tipping.

It’s a classic past time here in Yorkshire. Find a cow that is sleeping while standing up. Whip out the flip. Push the cow over. Watch it wake up and freak out. Then laugh your ass off for a good half hour.

You must go further west to find the elusive cow creatures that roam Nebraska.

Nebraska in my mind has always been the home of the Cornhuskers and their old football rivalry with the Oklahoma Sooners. Now I know where the nickname came from.

Hey, what’s with all the Nebraska hatin? Show us some love. I grew up in Nebraska and lived both in Lincoln and Omaha. I live in New York now. There’s more to Nebraska than corn. Omaha actually has a healthy IT community there. Famous people from Nebraska: 311, Bright Eyes (Conor Oberst), Henry Fonda, Johnny Carson, Marlon Brando, Warren Buffet. The Olympic swim trials are going on in Omaha right now. It’s a good place to live. Good post, but show us some love John Chow
