Slashdotted Again
written by John Chow on January 11th, 2006
The TechZone got Slashdotted again yesterday. As a result, the server decided to keel over and died until most of the Slashdotters have left. This of course affects site revenues. If the site is not available for reading, it can’t make any money. Normally a Slashdot means an extra $1,000 of income but because the server keeled, it won’t make anywhere near as much.
The truth of the matter is, the servers can handle a Slashdot without even blinking. However, the same can not be said about the Content Management System (CMS) that runs the site. The TechZone is powered by NePHP Publisher and it’s a piece of junk and I will be very happy when it’s finally replaced by the new custom CMS I am making.

Are you personally programming a new CMS?
I suspect the overload is caused by MySQL/Apache. You may want to load lighttpd for your static content and cache static content. There really is no point to query the database for static content.
I’ve been doing a lot of this tricky server stuff for a while since my site started to get over half a million page views daily.
Cheers
