Some Photos I Took with The Panasonic GF2

written by John Chow on April 3, 2011

You’ve already seen what great videos the Panasonic GF2 can do. Now check out its quality on normal photographs. To see the full sized photos, go to my Flickr gallery.

The GF2 is a 12 Megapixel Micro Four-Thirds Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera. It’s basically a DSLR in a compact sized camera. With the 14mm f/2.5 lens, the GF2 is small enough to easily fit into a jacket pocket or purse. Size is very important to me since I’ve found that the bigger the camera, the more it stays home. What good is a product if you don’t use it? I take the GF2 with me everywhere and it’s always available to take that spontaneous photo or video.

The image quality of the GF2 shocks me every time I use it. People can’t believe this level of quality can be achieved with a compact digital camera. The 14mm f/2.5 wide angle lens is very good for taking low light shots and has a depth of field which allows me to blur the background or foreground and focus on the main object. Focusing is done with the 3″ touch display – just tap what I want to focus on and the camera does the rest. I can also take pictures by tapping on the screen.

The only downside is the price. The GF2 with the 14mm lens sells for $699 at Amazon.com. That’s not inexpensive by any means. However, for the blogger looking for the ultimate in quality and compactness, you won’t find a better digital camera than this one.

I luv it , definitely a nice camera for sure! it looks crystal clear as if the picture is real!

Hey John,

Great pictures especially the blurring of the background is impressive. Can you zoom in with the original lens that comes with the camera? If so, I wonder at what ratio. 3x or more?

I can’t wait to see the camera up close. Small size is really important to me too. If it fits in a pocket then I want it.

John Chow April 3, 2011 at 11:06 pm

The prime lens I’m using has no zoom. There are many zoom lens available for it. The zoom lens are bigger and will make the GF2 less portable but still way more easy to carry around than a DSLR.

Abhik April 4, 2011 at 2:47 am

Go with a 2x tele converter :)

Email List Building April 4, 2011 at 11:23 am

Thanks John,

I think I’d better wait till I see the camera up close when you are in Vancouver. There’s nothing like being able to examine it closely before buying it.

I don’t need zoom most of the time but a few times I really needed it and I know that once in a while the need to zoom will arise. Carrying the big lenses around is a burden so I’d be doing it only very rarely when anticipating the need for zooming in.

When I was in Hawaii for example, at the annual surfing competition of Billabong Pipe Masters, not having a zoom was a real handicap.

John Chow April 4, 2011 at 1:09 pm

Yes you really have to anticipate the shooting situation you’ll be in. If I were going to Hawaii and taking nature shots, I would bring the zoom for sure. While the zoom lenses are bigger than the prime lenses, they’re still a lot smaller than a normal 35mm DSRL lens.

John Rampton April 5, 2011 at 6:20 pm

So true! They look good

Justin April 3, 2011 at 6:44 pm

Damn, Those pictures are so clear. My Nikon sucks.

PPC Ian April 4, 2011 at 9:53 am

Agreed, those photos are some of the best I’ve seen! Awesome stuff John. You’ve been blogging about this camera quite a bit and I can see why. It’s amazing.

Abhik April 5, 2011 at 11:30 am

I bet you have a normal point and shoot digital camera.. Go for a DSLR :)

Ottawa Web Design April 15, 2011 at 5:02 pm

I think, it depends upon camera quality.

entertainment news April 3, 2011 at 8:56 pm

Pictures are looks super and clear

semmy @ Make Money Online April 4, 2011 at 4:29 am

Yep it’s very clear, and the price also it’s not expensive at all. $699,

Bacolod Blogger April 4, 2011 at 10:47 am

I have to agree.. its almost a steal at $700.

Fazal Mayar @ Make Money Online April 4, 2011 at 11:18 am

700$ only? im definitely consireding getting it when I get some money… I need a camera as my family is big and we need some recording sometimes . :P

PPC Ian April 4, 2011 at 7:53 pm

Agreed, $700 seems like a great price for such amazing quality. It’s definitely a good investment for both family and business use. Something like this could really help someone launch an amazing YouTube channel!

Email List Building April 4, 2011 at 11:26 am

I think that it is very expensive. Most cameras of this size are much cheaper. Not all but most.

John Chow April 4, 2011 at 1:07 pm

As a compact digital camera, it’s very expensive. As a DSLR, it’s a bargain. :)

John Rampton April 5, 2011 at 6:21 pm

Saw one one ebay today for $550!

Klara Brummstiel April 3, 2011 at 10:28 pm

:) JD means HD

John Rampton April 5, 2011 at 6:21 pm

lol, now that’s pretty funny!

Brooklyn Dentist April 3, 2011 at 10:35 pm

The pictures really look like they were taken from a DSLR camera. It is a bit expensive for $699 but I believe the ease of bringing it makes it worth it.

John Chow April 3, 2011 at 11:11 pm

That’s because it’s pretty much is a DSLR. :)

Abhik April 4, 2011 at 2:51 am

Looks like a point and shoot camera :)

PPC Ian April 4, 2011 at 7:54 pm

I guess that’s the benefit of a camera like this! High quality, but really easy to use and easy to carry around!

singer divya April 3, 2011 at 11:23 pm

That is so cool, John! I did not know that Sally had her own blog. Wow! Quite impressive. :-)

John Rampton April 5, 2011 at 6:22 pm

When did she put up a blog? I had no clue

TYCP Magazine April 3, 2011 at 11:51 pm

Those pictures are very crisp. You got yourself a good camera.

Ed@ wet dry vacuum cleaners April 4, 2011 at 3:56 pm

they really are of unbelievable quality, the detail is so sharp. Im kinda wanting one now

Fabrizio Van Marciano April 4, 2011 at 2:29 am

Very sharp and the detailing is awesome. It’s amazing to see that you don’t need to bother with investing in an SLR the size of the Hubble Space Telescope to get images like these anymore.

Abhik April 4, 2011 at 2:45 am

Awesome qualities..
But John, the original image resolution is 540×309.. It’s pretty small compared to the HD videos the camera can take. Did you edited the images?

semmy @ Make Money Online April 4, 2011 at 4:34 am

I think John didn’t edit the photo at all.

John Chow April 4, 2011 at 9:24 am

The original resolution is 4,000×2,250. You have to check my Flickr account to see them.

Abhik April 5, 2011 at 3:15 am

Am I missing something?

semmy @ Make Money Online April 4, 2011 at 4:27 am

Hi John your photo it’s look clear! Really nice one!!

Radman April 4, 2011 at 7:07 am

Nice pics – I just hope the Nikon Coolpix S8100 12MP /with slow motion video (240 fps) at less than 1/2 the price of the GF2 I have coming in the mail will stand up to your images. Fingers crossed. Thanks for the post…. I think.

John Chow April 4, 2011 at 9:28 am

That’s not going to happen. The image sensor in the GF2 is 9 times larger than 1/2.5″ sensors typically used in compact digital cameras like the Coolpix.

Ottawa Web Design April 15, 2011 at 5:01 pm

Hmm, take a picture of that. We will see it.

James Moralde April 4, 2011 at 8:08 am

Works like a regular DSLR camera. If this thing can output in RAW, any blogger would definitely find this to be a must have, and drop the need for a dslr.

John Chow April 4, 2011 at 9:30 am

Yes it can output RAW but I mostly just leave it in jpeg because of less workflow.

fas April 4, 2011 at 8:30 am

Awesome picture quality. I wonder what the new lenses will do.

John Chow April 4, 2011 at 9:31 am

Depends on what you want to do with the camera. They have lens for night shots, macros, fish eye, sports, distances, etc. I’m looking at getting a 25mm f/0.95 lens but they cost $1,500 to $2,500.

Bacolod Blogger April 4, 2011 at 10:38 am

I guess for sports its always better to use a dslr.

Abhik April 5, 2011 at 3:18 am

$2500.. You’ll get the best one form Cannon’s range

Bacolod Blogger April 4, 2011 at 10:28 am

You can never go wrong with the GF2 primarily because of its lenses. I have a dslr and a gf2 and the latter is perfect for those times when you don’t need to lug around a bulky camera. Nice buy John

entertainment news April 4, 2011 at 9:21 pm

its picture quality is super then my sony

Ottawa Web Design April 15, 2011 at 5:00 pm
