You have to hand it to Marie Walker Riddle of Mom Between for her out of the box thinking. What better way to promote her new blog than by leveraging a world famous Internet blogger?

Marie has been cornering me at all the Dot Com hangouts for her “Talking with John Chow” interviews, where she tries to get me to spill the beans on the secret of making money online.

The particular talk is about list building, and how the money is in the list. Many bloggers think their blog is their foundation and everything else (twitter, facebook, RSS, etc.) builds around that. This might be true if you’re just a blogger. However, if you’re a blogger looking to make money online, your foundation is your email list and everything else builds around the list.

When you have a big email list, you have a foundation that is so strong that not even Google can break you. The main purpose of my blog, aside from delivering great content for my readers, is to build targeted leads for my list. If your blog doesn’t have an email marketing list yet, RIGHT NOW would be the time to start one. Everyday you wait is money flying out the window. Watch the video to learn more.

My recommend email list provider is Aweber. Aweber offers a $1 trial account for all new customers. The account is just like a normal Aweber account and includes unlimited email campaigns, newsletter, broadcasts and follow ups. It’s a great way to test drive Aweber to see what it can do for your blog. Your satisfaction is guaranteed. If you find that email marketing is not for you, contact Aweber within 30 days and they’ll give you the $1 back.

Hi John

Thanks for the re-energizing, rejuvenating concept of list building. Seems to work with millionaires and aspiring individuals. Definately my next plan of attack.

Erik von Werlhof March 16, 2014 at 9:11 pm

What better way to learn how to do something right than by emulating the example of those who are already successful?

Thank you Marie and John for this great vid!

AWeber simply rocks. GetResponse can’t compete with these guys in my opinion.

KongWing March 17, 2014 at 12:29 am

Amazing explaination John! It sounds easy but it is al about perfecting your autoresponder. I love Aweber automation list :) I only wish that Aweber put an automated list cleaning tool (they won’t do it, if you look at the pricing plans then you know why they won’t make something like that).

So true, some time ago I took John’s advice “The Money Is In The List” , today I make living from my list…

faisal March 17, 2014 at 4:06 am

Thanks for the re-emphasis.

Excellent video. I am believing more and more that it’s true that your number one asset online is your list that you build yourself. I am working on that myself as we speak.

I agree that your list should be built and your blog and everything else you do revolves around your list and the subscribers you acquire.

Yogendra Sharma March 17, 2014 at 5:20 am

You’re always my inspiration and i followed you in the way you are working. I hope very soon i will be in the list. :)

Svetlana Koslov March 17, 2014 at 5:21 am

Thanks for reinforcing ad dollars should be spend to acquire a customer and not to sell them something at the start of relationship.

Lou March 17, 2014 at 5:38 am

Very interesting John, you certainly your your business, I am new to all this , and I am learning stuff by the bucket load, especially from you.

Shaun March 17, 2014 at 6:03 am

Hi John,
The money is in the list is so true. Google can not take your list i.e. your customers away from you through their algorithm changes like they can with SEO. You look after and respect your list, and your list will look after and respect you. :-)

You hit it right on the nose! If your serious with your blog on making money
then the list is really everything -the main focus. Have really good content
in your blog for your list (building)!

Mainak Halder March 17, 2014 at 10:53 am

Yes, John, you’re so right. The money is in the list, more appropriately, a targeted list. Having useless list of subscribers just increases the cost of the email marketing.

Tony March 17, 2014 at 11:09 am

John you are right on, having a list can be the difference between having a profitable business or not having a business at all!

Aakash Singhal March 17, 2014 at 12:38 pm

Thanks for the re-emphasis.

Fred Williams March 17, 2014 at 12:45 pm

I’m still baffled at the fact that so many people ignore list building when it comes to making money online.

When you own a list, you own an asset. An asset that can make you money anytime that you need it to.

Harshajyoti Das March 17, 2014 at 12:46 pm

I have been with aweber since 2 years now and I can’t complain. It’s good to see you re-emphasising your readers to build an asset, “an email list”. Very soon, I am going to try out something with FB ads and free tutorial giveaway to capture some emails.

Stephen Walker March 17, 2014 at 1:50 pm

Hi John,

Yes, I have seen you emphasising the value of your list for a long while now.

I must be very slow as it is only just beginning to permeate my thick head. I will be signing up with aweber immediately. Organic search traffic is sooo slow.

Jon March 18, 2014 at 8:46 am

According to Frank Kern, “the money is in the list is complete and total BS”

It’s more correct to say that the money can be in the list.
Some people deals with a 1% open rate in that case it’s
fair to say that the money is NOT in the list.
It all boils down to what kind of relationship you build with the list, it can be good or bad.
Based on that we can say that the money is in the relationship you build with the list.
We are getting closer to the truth…
That’s not the correct conclusion according to Mr. Kern.
Kern’s conclusion is simply this: the money is in the value you provide to the list.

Check out this video where Kern talks about the statements above.

John Chow March 18, 2014 at 9:14 am

Frank is a great guy, and he’s really good at marketing “spin”. Let me give you my version of marketing spin: “In order to provide value for your list, you must first have a list. Therefore, the money is in the list.” :)

Rob Douglas March 21, 2014 at 6:31 am

This sounds like someone saying something for the sake of saying something.

Phillip G Hudson March 18, 2014 at 9:10 am

John, thanks for the comments. However, could you give us some ways that we might build up our opt-in lists? Thanks so much.

Jeremy Drinkard March 19, 2014 at 10:11 am

I could not agree more. In my experience the website drives traffic to your site and the list is where a long-term and professional relationship is built. Furthermore, utilizing strategies for introducing subscribers to products that may help them in their online (or offline) business, is a great way to continue to generate revenue for your organization. Building trust from your subscribers can take some additional conversations and tips in addition to the blog, but ultimately it is not overly difficult to build a loyal readership that has established trust in what you have to offer.

George March 21, 2014 at 5:34 am

Hi John
We follow the same basic principles and I couldn’t agree with you more to say anymore about list building would be an understatement

Best regards
