Technorati Recovers From Evil Ping Attack

written by John Chow on March 24, 2007

How to make $593 in less than one hour

technorati-152.png

Well, it looks like Technoranti has recovered from my evil blog ping attack. They have managed to removed all the posts that have been showing up a individuals blogs and re-ranked everybody that saw a huge boost because of it, including myself. I am out of the Top 100. :(

It was very nice to see myself in the Top 100 list, if only for a few days. I need to move up another 52 more spots to get back into the Top 100. Here’s the current rankings of the Top Commentators. Looks like most got their rank pulled back. The reminding blogs can expected to be reset anytime now.

It was fun while it lasted, wasn’t it? I hope that Technorati learns a lesson from this and will make their service better. More coverage of this story can be found at Mark Robinson.

Well John, I’ve got a feeling that you’ll find a way to be back in the top 100 within the next few months!

Culture Shiok! March 24, 2007 at 10:51 am

So that’s why I’m still at 26k.

I experimented on it, based on Mark Robinson’s “under 5000 in an hour”

Took me 2 nights to get into the Top 10 commentators.

Got my consolation prize… another link to Johnchow.com

Congratulations to Technorati!

Saman Sadeghi March 24, 2007 at 11:10 am

Enjoy it while it lasts, I’m coming back!

Dave March 24, 2007 at 12:59 pm

Thems fightin’ words!

Saman Sadeghi March 25, 2007 at 5:53 am

You guys have been lucky that work has kept me busy!

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 12:35 am

Did your traffic had a big boom because of that, saman?

Culture Shiok! March 24, 2007 at 10:41 pm

I’ll be moving then…

…to Samanathon.com

Jonix March 29, 2007 at 12:36 am

let’s go :)

Jane May March 25, 2007 at 1:48 am

I think we all feel the same way!

lyndonmaxewell March 24, 2007 at 12:11 pm

lol.. it was about time technorati discovered this err of theirs. or, people will be losing confidence in their accuracy!

derrich March 25, 2007 at 11:48 am

Ain’t that the truth…

James Britton March 25, 2007 at 1:40 pm

I dropped to over 200,000 from 82,000 an lost about 25 blogs that were counted previously

HMTKSteve March 24, 2007 at 5:25 pm

I’m sitting about 32K now.

Culture Shiok! March 24, 2007 at 11:05 pm

I’m slowly moving up…

I thought I’ll be growing roots at 26k.

Just broke into 25K.

Bob March 24, 2007 at 10:21 am

Consider it a sidestep, not a step backwards.

Saman Sadeghi March 24, 2007 at 11:11 am

Maybe not for John but I when from 1,900 to 29,000!

Josh Rives March 24, 2007 at 1:21 pm

What’s an extra 50 or so spots? Just focus on the goal and you’ll be back.

Saman Sadeghi March 25, 2007 at 5:55 am

50 spots?! try 18,000….

Culture Shiok! March 24, 2007 at 10:44 pm

Really?! That’s a lot of JC links that got cleared.

Saman Sadeghi March 26, 2007 at 9:40 am

It’s wasn’t just John’s, most were, but not all!

Dax Desai March 24, 2007 at 10:22 am

I see your reviewme prices have dropped now. Maybe I can afford it now?

John Chow March 24, 2007 at 10:30 am

Well, since I’m not Top 100 anymore, I figure I would lower it. However, I didn’t want to lower it back to the $250 price.

Saman Sadeghi March 24, 2007 at 11:13 am

I have no doubt that the you’ll be back in the Top 100 by the end of next month – you come uop with some evil plans!

Xof March 24, 2007 at 11:32 am

That would be only fair I guess… You still have until the end of 2007 to achieve your goal!!

I am pretty far from Top 100… I Rank: 122,811

lyndonmaxewell March 24, 2007 at 12:16 pm

I wonder… did you get any reviews at the $500 price tag? They would have been screaming by now if so..

Dave March 24, 2007 at 2:17 pm

He did get at least 2…that’s what he said in the post announcing the price has gone up. I wonder if those people got any compensation.

derrich March 25, 2007 at 11:49 am

John is too evil to issue refunds.

Dave March 25, 2007 at 2:28 pm

I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case derrich :)

Saman Sadeghi March 26, 2007 at 9:43 am

Why should he? They bought them didn’t they?!

Marc March 24, 2007 at 12:29 pm

That;s fair. So long as you’re still getting requests, there’ no reason not to crank up the price :)

Jane May March 24, 2007 at 11:48 am

Thats a really good point, I was so into the post, that I didn’t think to look there.

Aris March 24, 2007 at 10:22 am

John, thanks for the permanent link in this posting. I thought I’d be out like two days ago when I decided not to flooded your site with comments simply to keep my site in top commentators list. Apparently there is this slow traffic during the weekend, so may be I’d stay another hour or two.

I really don’t understand Technorati ranking. Even at the time when they listed you in #76 Favorite, when I clicked on the link it showed 102 etc. But you have the (evil) power to bring it up again.

BTW, as of this writing you’re still in #3 spot on ‘make money online’ in Google below bidvertiser and squidoo.

Jane May March 24, 2007 at 11:49 am

Not too many people can understand technorati, you’re not alone.

Saman Sadeghi March 24, 2007 at 12:18 pm

I don’t think your supposed to understand it! If you did, there would be a hundred other products like it out there!

Nomar March 24, 2007 at 10:24 am

Too bad your out of the top 100 now !! im sure you will get in soon

Ask a question March 24, 2007 at 10:24 am

With the amount of articles you post, the audience that reads you and your evil technics
it shouldnt take more then few weeks..

Marc March 24, 2007 at 12:31 pm

Not that I don’t have faith in John, but he’s in insanely competitive territory now. It might take longer than all the well-wishers think.

Jason March 24, 2007 at 10:28 am

That’s too bad, but fair I guess.

No doubt you’ll get back into the top 100 on your own merits again though!

Saman Sadeghi March 24, 2007 at 11:15 am

Don’t kid yourself – John will come up with another evil scheme!

Jane May March 24, 2007 at 11:51 am

yes. I think the next evil scheme will come including Mitch’s product as a prize. Mitch did offer him 5 for a contest! I’m still waiting for that contest John!

Saman Sadeghi March 24, 2007 at 12:17 pm

That would be cool, I though I don’t really need a Newletter app…

Maybe if I got one, I’d find uses for it!

Jane May March 25, 2007 at 1:42 am

Yeah, I could use a couple!

Jason March 24, 2007 at 1:27 pm

John … evil? … never!

Tyler March 24, 2007 at 10:29 am

I’m sure you’ll think of some crazy PR type thing to do to make up for the 52 places you need to go ;)

Saman Sadeghi March 24, 2007 at 11:17 am

I’d love to see that, the Google guys are pretty smart…

lyndonmaxewell March 24, 2007 at 12:18 pm

He doesn’t has to wait long. There are still tons of batch reviews coming in.. :D

Wendy Piersall March 24, 2007 at 10:33 am

I was WONDERING why the heck my rank went UP today and not down!

I thought they might have caught onto your evil ways. What a bummer!

Jane May March 24, 2007 at 11:52 am

I know it! But I guess John is above the radar any way, so it was just a matter of time :)

Wendy Piersall March 24, 2007 at 6:53 pm

Hey lady! Always great to see the other female John Chow chick hanging around. ;)

I was all psyched that I cracked the top 10,000 a couple of weeks ago. I went up about 1000 points earlier today – then packed on another 1000 tonight to go BACK up above 10K!

Sucks.

Dave March 26, 2007 at 9:02 am

Keep building links to your blog and you’ll get back up there :)

Ask a question March 24, 2007 at 10:37 am

I’ve just noticed, they also Downgraded your ReviewMe price… at list you’ve got to earn some money when it was 500.. i wounder what will be This Month revenue with all those crazy things happened to you.

Dinner March 24, 2007 at 10:38 am

Damn, that’s sucky. I’m sure you’ll be able to make it back to the top 100 again though.

Adventures In Money Making March 24, 2007 at 10:43 am

you still got a good boost from the traffic

lyndonmaxewell March 24, 2007 at 10:49 am

Well, looks like it was fun while it lasted. :) Now it’s time to properly work our way up there.

Jane May March 24, 2007 at 11:53 am

Yeah, it felt like we had some time to concentrate on other things since we didn’t have to worry about technorati :) But now it’s back to the trenches

Marc March 24, 2007 at 12:33 pm

I ignored it altogether knowing it was only temporary. I’m not surprised to see that rank vanish for my blog.

Jane May March 25, 2007 at 1:45 am

Well, ideally you are always doing what is needed to increase your blogs rankings, but it was nice not having it as the top thing to think of…which it normally isn’t, I usually focus on content first.

Saman Sadeghi March 25, 2007 at 5:58 am

Very true, it’s time to really focus on content again.

vijay March 24, 2007 at 10:54 am

i didnt receive any boost in my ranking though… i just made few comments in your blog and i didnt see any new links to my blog on that account…

Marc March 24, 2007 at 12:33 pm

You had to be in the top 10 commentators list for it to have an effect.

Adventures In Money Making March 24, 2007 at 11:24 am

well it was good while it lasted! I wouldn’t mind getting that sort of traffic!

Saman Sadeghi March 25, 2007 at 6:09 am

You can, just concentrate on content and get the word out!

Dave March 24, 2007 at 11:25 am

All good things must come to an end :P

I doubt it will be too long before you are back in the top 100.

I’m pretty sure URL’s in the comments are rel=”nofollow” Vijay.

vijay March 24, 2007 at 11:45 am

ohh thanks dave. I never got a boost anyway when everyone got a spike on their rankings.

i really have to learn a lot about blogging and codes. Still dont understand some techie terms.

Leftblank March 24, 2007 at 3:02 pm

rel=’nofollow’ means that a search engine spider shouldn’t count that URL when calculating the importance of the page. If you don’t use it and you link to some website that uses blackhat techniques that are discovered, your website might (most likely will) be punished for that as well. When you use Nofollow, that wont be the case, keeping you safe and removing the advantage of spamming your website ;)

Jane May March 25, 2007 at 1:46 am

All though to get commentators to comment, I would remove that no-follow from the top commentator widget.

Saman Sadeghi March 25, 2007 at 6:16 am

Very true, free linkbacks are a huge incentive, no matter the rank of the site!

Dave March 25, 2007 at 6:56 am

Well, with a site the site of John Chow’s, you don’t need to remove the “no follow” on top commentators. I’m sure having a top commentator spot gets you plenty of traffic as is!

Saman Sadeghi March 26, 2007 at 9:48 am

Traffic is one thing, but Technorati rank is another!

Harry L March 24, 2007 at 11:45 am

My question is will this cause a significant setback in traffic on all these affected sites or not?

Dave March 24, 2007 at 12:14 pm

I’m not really sure.

I’m not new to the website field…but I am not up to date on all things blog. So I’m not sure how much traffic you get from being high rated by Technorati.

lyndonmaxewell March 24, 2007 at 12:22 pm

No, the links generated are not related to the traffic. It’s just a flaw on the part of technorati anyway. Nothing changed, other than the ranking.

Dave March 24, 2007 at 1:00 pm

Yes, I realize that.

What I’m wondering is what kind of effect being high ranked on Technorati has on your traffic. If any at all…

lyndonmaxewell March 24, 2007 at 9:40 pm

No effect at all. Some people take it as a sense of pride or satisfaction on being popular.

Saman Sadeghi March 25, 2007 at 6:19 am

I wouldn’t say “No effect at all.“, people might see the high rank and want to check it out what makes the site so popular….

Dave March 25, 2007 at 2:32 pm

It’s possible…I figure it’s most likely you have a popular well traffic blog and for that reason it’s ranked high in technorati (because you have a lot of backlinks due to your popularity)

Therefore you traffic and popularity is the cause of your high rank in technorati, not the other way around.

Jon Lee March 24, 2007 at 11:52 am

Ahh I dropped from 20,000 to 70,000… oh well!

Culture Shiok! March 24, 2007 at 10:48 pm

How does it feel?

Jack March 24, 2007 at 12:09 pm

Oh how the mighty have fallen!

Piku March 24, 2007 at 12:39 pm

“Well, it looks like Technoranti has”
Isn’t it Technorati (without n) ?

FayZ March 24, 2007 at 12:58 pm

oooh john..u the devil..haha…noop think technorati is the devil now..no worries..you will be back in the game in no time..

Francois Gendron March 24, 2007 at 1:51 pm

Heh I guess it’s only a matter of a few days before you climb back in the top 100. But anyways, 150 can’t be THAT bad.

Stuart Hannig March 24, 2007 at 2:49 pm

Yup, my rank dropped by 40,000 :(

Bryce March 24, 2007 at 3:14 pm

That reminds me, I should start commenting more. From now on, I shall comment on every post! More than once ! :)

Culture Shiok! March 24, 2007 at 11:14 pm

Like this…?

It’s not easy to comment. You’ll just make a fool out of yourself if your comments are no way related to the post.

But what’s happening here is that commentators now comment on other commentators’ comments.

Welcome to the Johnchow.com Forum!

francesco mapelli March 24, 2007 at 5:03 pm

So it’s your fault if I’ve been bumped out of the top 50.000 ??

Sob.

lyndonmaxewell March 24, 2007 at 11:27 pm

I guess you might want to blame Technorati for giving you ‘false hopes’ instead.. :D

francesco mapelli March 25, 2007 at 6:45 am

It’s easier yo blame john!

you know, he’s EVIL! ;)

francesco mapelli March 25, 2007 at 6:46 am

It’s easier to blame john!

you know, he’s EVIL! ;)

msdanielle March 24, 2007 at 5:46 pm

well i’m glad it got fixed bc i stopped looking at the numbers once they really jumped. but it kinda stung when i looked at it today

James March 24, 2007 at 6:34 pm

Who knows, maybe after this you’ll be back in the top 100.

Chee Kui March 25, 2007 at 2:50 am

At least you have another 52 spots left ;)
You can make it John! You got my support! One favourite from me, ehehe.

Anna March 25, 2007 at 8:08 am

LOL! No, literally, I’m laughing…

It cracked me up when you said “I hope that Technorati learns a lesson from this and will make their service better”… hehe

Actually, I hope so too… I’m not one of your top commenters (far from it) but I was also affected by the error one of my blogs (bloggersfordollars.com)… I havent’ checked yet to see if my Technorati has been fixed but I hope it has…

derrich March 25, 2007 at 11:47 am

I dropped from 19,1xx to 52,xxx. Wow. What gives?

Stuart Hannig March 25, 2007 at 12:11 pm

I’m going to beat you to the punch John :) Only 88,077 more blogs to get infront of :)

derrich March 26, 2007 at 6:18 am

Now that would be sweet!

Adam Henningsen March 29, 2007 at 12:31 am

Sad to see that you are back at the above 100 mark, but where you have come with you site is absolutely amazing, I can only dream of such spectacular performance. I am sure with all of this link bait going on that you will reach the 100 mark naturally very soon.
