Testing The New iPhone 3G S

We had a chance to test Apple’s newest iPhone, the 3G S, during yesterday’s Dot Com Pho. The 3G S was supposed to be the gadget of the week but I couldn’t squeeze it in because there were so many new features on the phone, the video would have been too long. Even after editing down the clips, the 3G S video is still over five minutes long.

The new iPhone 3G G is an evolutionary step up from the outgoing iPhone 3G. Those with a first generation non-3G iPhone will want to make the upgrade to iPhone 3G S right away. Those with an iPhone 3G will have more justifying to do with their accountants or wives. As for me, I’ll probably get one because I really like the faster speed and all the new features. What new features? Watch the video find out.

Amazing how fast that thing is. I think it is time to switch from a blackberry to the 3G S

Everyone I know who has an iPhone finds 1 major issue with it. Its not a Blackberry. The iPhone does a lot of things well, it just doesn’t quite handle the keyboard and e-mail thing well enough yet. Once the iPhone comes with a slide out keyboard, that’ll be the item to sell me on it.

Indeed. You will also find that the most vehement of iPhone Fans will defend their devices despite having no real experience with any of the other devices available.

Some of them say that if it takes more than 5 min to love a device, it’s useless. Well, I say, does it take 5 minutes to become a concert pianist? Clearly the things worth investing in take more time to become proficient at. Otherwise, people wouldn’t.

I back myself up by pointing out that I actually own both devices. Though I respect the iPhone’s multimedia prowess, it is not a capable workhorse and business device overall.

Watch out, here comes my “vehement” iPhone fanboy reply, so make sure you take a seat for this one, hehe.

Not everyone needs a smartphone solely for business, there’s something called “fun”, which is pretty much impossible to enjoy with a Blackberry, considering its tiny screens and crappy GUI.

I said if it takes me more than 5 mins to love a device, it’s not for me. How can you compare using a Blackberry to becoming a concert pianist? :p

I think you should sell your iPhone since the only reason you seem to have it, is to say you “own one” so you can bash it. 😉

I’ve never owned a Blackberry, but I can honestly say they don’t appeal to me because they are only good for email–and there’s more in life than just emailing on a physical QWERTY keyboard. Who cares if I’ve never owned one, Blackberries are boring, ugly smartphones. 😀

            iPhone Gary..

If i got an iphone would I be able to keep my msn messenger and gtalk always on, as I do now with my bb?

Would i be able to have any processes running in the background? Like can I have a spreadsheet open, switch to my email and then come back to my spreadsheet without closing the spreadsheet?

What would I do with my long list of international blackberry messenger contacts? I basically text them all for free.. with the iphone I would have to pay international text messaging costs..

The iphone finally got video and mms.. groundbreaking features!!!!

          4. Stephen says:

MMS was on five year old (and older) NOKIAs. Not ground breaking. Video is on most new smartphones before the 3GS.

BB Messenger is a BB App only.

      2. J. Rodriguez says:

That’s funny how people stick to the physical keyboard. I can understand since I was thinking the same before getting my iPhone 3G. Now it just don’t really make sense. I can type really (and i really mean it) fast on the iPhone 3G keyboard. Landscape is even faster now with the 3.0 update. You just get used to it.

But I would say that it takes a little more time to get used to type quickly on an iPhone versus a physical Keyboard.. but you still end up typing fast on both. And.. originally I tough I might be the only one typing that fast but after watching some of my friends texting or typing on their iPhone/iPod.. i realized that anyone can do it.

So… I totally disagree that the missing physical keyboard is a majority issue.. it’s not even an issue in my opinion, at all.

        1. Gary says:

The iPhone’s auto correct is super accurate, and this enables you to type at faster speeds than a physical keyboard. It’s always good to try something new. 😉

        2. John Chow says:

I can type faster on an iPhone keyboard than I can on a BB keyboard. Stephen just has iPhone envy because the Berry is no longer #1.

Okay, I can upgrade on the 15th to a new phone. It looks like the Curve is gone and the iPhone is in. I was going to go to the Bold, but the speed of the new iPhone is just too great to ignore and the screen space is outrageous.

  5. Diabetis says:

3G is the talk of the town on everywhere I go.

  6. Well I just got two week ago the first gen iphone so I still need to learn how to use it before thinking of an upgrade.

Also think I need to get to Vancouver and get you to show me how to use all my new Mac and Apple toys.

One question, where do I get the protective covers for the 15.4?

It is supposed to in the latest OS 3.0 and 3GS. Don’t know about the quality though. When it connects through my Bluetooth phone gateway at home, my cordless handsets crackle with the iPhone, but doesn’t with either of the Blackberries or even the HTC S710.

  16. Wow! It’s amazing. S really stands for Speed and it makes sense.

“iPhone 3G S release” is both a revolution and evolution in the industry. Speed plays a very large role in every aspect of our lives and I guess Apple has focused to take that into account, too.

Thanks John for the video and I hope everybody enjoys using this new generation of the iPhone.

    Cheers!

  24. It’s crazy the way we are manipulated into believing we need the latest gadgets. When the iPhone came out 2 years ago it was supposed to be 10 years ahead of its time. We’ve since had 2 upgrades to it in those 2 years. I guess it waasn’t that far advanced.
