The $1,000 Sponsored Tweet

written by John Chow on November 17th, 2009

As some of you many know, I recently joined a new pay per tweet network call Ad.ly to see how they compare to Sponsored Tweets. The early results has been pretty amazing and I think every Twitter user should jump on this.

I knew that Ad.ly was well funded and had signed a lot of big celebrity tweeters commanding a very high tweet rate. What I didn’t know was that they’ve been getting some nice payouts for even the small time Twitter users. While my 50,000+ followers may seem big, it’s really small compare to a celebrity like Kim Kardashian with over 2 million followers. Still, Ad.Ly was able to get me $1,000 for my first tweet!

My Ad.ly Earnings

The tweet was already written by the advertiser so all I had to do was hit accept and Ad.ly did the rest. $1,000 for hitting a button! While $1,000 tweets maybe few and far between, the average rate Ad.ly has been getting me has been much higher than Sponsored Tweets. The second tweet Ad.ly got me was for $200.

My Ad.ly Earnings

Like Sponsored Tweets, Ad.ly is free to join and you have total control over what ads you accept and reject. You can also set your own price. However, Ad.ly will try to sell your tweets at the highest price they can get for it. And if an advertiser wishes to make you an offer, ad.ly will present that to you as well.

If you are already signed up for Sponsored Tweets then you should sign up for Ad.ly as well. After all, it’s better to have two companies working for you than one. It will be a race between the two to see which one earns me more this month.

  1. Ad.ly looks really interesting. Seems that they don’t enforce disclosure though…that seems like a huge problem. Or am I wrong? Do they have a disclosure engine in place?

  2. Holy crap – good for you! I’m going to try this.
    I assume that’s $200 per day for 5 days ($1000/week)?

  3. What’s your response been from your followers in regards to tweeting ads?

  4. Shoemoney is also traveling with the same ad.ly money . let us meet him. who knows I will be there soon….

  5. Dang, $1,000 for a single tweet, somehow I don’t think that will last.

  6. I have been a member of Ad.ly for a few months now and till today I have not received a single offer from advertisers, whereas with sponsored tweet I have been receiving offers. If you think Ad.ly is much better than S.T. please tell me what am I doing wrong coz I don’t see Ad.ly being any better.

  7. Shoe has made over $33,000 from Ad.ly. I haven’t received any but I don’t have the followers like him or you. I think most of my followers are bots so I think I have to delete them. I have to find better people to follow me. Greg Ellison

  8. Sponsored Tweets has been decent. I signed up based on John’s recommendation. Definitely worthwhile. I am looking forward to see the activity on Ad.ly. the only part I don’t like so far is having to wait to get paid. Sponsored Tweets pays instantly upon hitting $50 (nice).

  9. Twitter is a cool tool and it is very good for getting traffic, it will be very interesting to see what kind of traffic I can generate.

  10. I joined these last night. I’d be happy with $1 a tweet. lol

  11. $1000 for just a tweet? That’s a huge amount man I’m sure you’re going to hit the accept button in less than 10 seconds?

Anyway, congrats on the $1000 per offer, that’s great but with the number of followers you have, you deserve it John!

  12. So far I’ve had 4 pffers from Sponsored Tweets, let’s see if I can top that with Ad.ly

  13. Hmmn.. this has given me an idea :-) excellent

  14. $1000 for a single twit – very nice. Just signed up there after seeing a post on shoemoneys blog (seems he already made $33k with ad.ly)

  15. I will have to look into this and see if this type of advertising will work for my sites

  16. That’s great news. I haven’t even hit $1k total at Ad.ly yet but it gives me something to look forward to.

  17. A great option for the advertiser to use. He can advertise as well as tweet or just be happy twittering.

  18. Twitter is the bomb. Being that it is still pretty new to most, it’s a great way to connect to potential customers.

  19. $1000 for one Tweet? you really rock john! I think I’m gonna test this… but my followers are less than a hundred by now… :( maybe $0.0001 per tweet?

  20. Any plans for an in-depth comparison of SponsoredTweets and Ad.ly?

  21. Wow that is quite impressive. Congratulations.

  22. That is some payment, $1000 per tweet, wow!

  23. That’s awesome John, And btw, thanks for writing your book on making money with your blog. I truly enjoyed it (and will adapt it)

  24. $1,000 for clicking a button…even only all the buttons I clicked gave me $1,000! Well done!

  25. John, I remember back in January you encouraged those who havent joined twitter to do so ASAP. I ignored your advise, Am now looking back with regret. I joined twitter last week and now am in the rush of hunting for followers.

Love your blog. Good luck to every one here

  26. Thanks for the heads-up John!!! Does this require a certain age, or can you start immediately?

  27. hi John,

Is that so easy as you said ? Is there any charge for that two links?

Could you tell me why tweeter is more powerful than other social networking media?

Tks John, u are my internet guru’s….

  28. Nice, that’s great money.

I signed up for both of them a while ago. Sponsored Tweets has so far offered $1 five times but I’m yet to get offers from Ad.ly.

I have about 270 followers. I think one’s ratio matters a lot. You might not get an offer even if you have 10,000 followers but follow 12,000 people.

  29. Signed Up for Ad.Ly but i haven’t gotten any type of sponsored tweet i lowered my price and everything not sure how many followers you need or the ratio in comparison to followers and following. But its worth a shot i suppose.

  30. I just signed up, since SponsoredTweets has basically stopped for me :)

    -Mike

  31. 1000 USD is too big for a single tweet. very amazing.

  32. I have been rolling the dice on this one and coming out pretty good. Not near as good as John Chow but still proud of what I have made.

  33. Hi John

I love their referral program and hopefully the Twitterers with a small amount of followers will benefit from all this aswell not just the big cats, time will tell.

    thanks for all the advice

  34. One great thing with John is that he replies to comment.

  35. I signed up for ad.ly and have yet to be matched with a sponsor.

  36. You will only make money from sponsored tweets IF you have a huge Twitter following. Anyway, those brokers usually invite A-list Twitter user like JC.

  37. i signed up with sponsoredtwets and ad.ly, but so far i earn some $$ with sponsoredtweets, ad.ly hv not yet match me with a sponsor. i signed up both the same time.

  38. Find New faces and make them friends by rating their face. Very uniquie and easiest way to create new friends loging to site now and find Are you Hot or Not

  39. That’s good for you! Congrats for being a part of the Top 20 :)

  40. That’s fantastic. I wonder what Demi Moore or Ashton Kutcher would get paid per tweet.

  41. Yes paying through paypal is an add advantage instead of check.

  42. I’m wary of stuff like this, as it may violate the Twitter TOS, as I’ve recently read them.

  43. is that true usd 1000 for a click? i am a bit amazed.

  44. already try ST. Not try ad.ly yet. But i will try now.

  45. Ad.ly is kewl.. 1000$ for a single tweet OMG i still cant believe this…

  46. Oh this is a great amount John. I never thought they would pay as much as this for one sponsored tweet. Well, this is the reason why I should concentrate in bringing more followers to my bag. I still can’t believe this.
