The $1,000 Sponsored Tweet

written by John Chow on November 17, 2009

The Ultimate Online Profit Model

As some of you many know, I recently joined a new pay per tweet network call Ad.ly to see how they compare to Sponsored Tweets. The early results has been pretty amazing and I think every Twitter user should jump on this.

I knew that Ad.ly was well funded and had signed a lot of big celebrity tweeters commanding a very high tweet rate. What I didn’t know was that they’ve been getting some nice payouts for even the small time Twitter users. While my 50,000+ followers may seem big, it’s really small compare to a celebrity like Kim Kardashian with over 2 million followers. Still, Ad.Ly was able to get me $1,000 for my first tweet!

My Ad.ly Earnings

The tweet was already written by the advertiser so all I had to do was hit accept and Ad.ly did the rest. $1,000 for hitting a button! While $1,000 tweets maybe few and far between, the average rate Ad.ly has been getting me has been much higher than Sponsored Tweets. The second tweet Ad.ly got me was for $200.

My Ad.ly Earnings

Like Sponsored Tweets, Ad.ly is free to join and you have total control over what ads you accept and reject. You can also set your own price. However, Ad.ly will try to sell your tweets at the highest price they can get for it. And if an advertiser wishes to make you an offer, ad.ly will present that to you as well.

If you are already signed up for Sponsored Tweets then you should sign up for Ad.ly as well. After all, it’s better to have two companies working for you than one. It will be a race between the two to see which one earns me more this month.

Ad.ly looks really interesting. Seems that they don’t enforce disclosure though…that seems like a huge problem. Or am I wrong? Do they have a disclosure engine in place?

John Chow November 17, 2009 at 11:34 am

They do enforce disclosure and have a disclosure engine in place. A paid tweet says Ad or Ad by Ad.ly.

Rich Guy November 17, 2009 at 8:35 pm

How do they pay a sponsored tweet by paypal, check or electronic funds transfer?

John Chow November 17, 2009 at 8:39 pm

They pay by PayPal or check.

Tinh November 18, 2009 at 5:36 am

Congrats John, I saw the top 20 and you were there. Hope I can win the Challange IV :-)

ZK @ Web Marketing Blog November 19, 2009 at 3:39 pm

Yes paying through paypal is an add advantage instead of check.

KizzyCarson - Free Healthy Christmas CookBook December 3, 2009 at 10:39 am

HaHa I cant imagine him not being there with a 1k tweet lol

Will November 17, 2009 at 11:30 am

Holy crap – good for you! I’m going to try this.
I assume that’s $200 per day for 5 days ($1000/week)?

John Chow November 17, 2009 at 11:34 am

No, it was $1,000 for one tweet. That $200 screen shot is another tweet they got me.

Will November 17, 2009 at 11:41 am

Oh I thought you set the price per week and they tweet once per week per advertiser.

John Chow November 17, 2009 at 8:39 pm

That is an option an advertiser can choose. Or they can choose to just do one tweet as well.

Dana @ Online Knowledge November 17, 2009 at 8:07 pm

wow, really a big hit john.

ZK @ Web Marketing Blog November 19, 2009 at 3:40 pm

Nice to see that your 140 characters are giving you that much money.

That means of value of one character is $71.43,

John Fredrickson November 17, 2009 at 11:41 am

What’s your response been from your followers in regards to tweeting ads?

John Chow November 17, 2009 at 12:05 pm

I have received a grand total of 2 replies saying they are going to unfollow me because of sponsoring tweeting. Not bad out of 50,000+.

Benjamin Cip November 17, 2009 at 1:08 pm

It’s silly to unfollow someone just because he is using sponsored tweet or whatever could make him earn some money…

Lee Ka Hoong November 17, 2009 at 5:22 pm

Yea, as long as the sponsored tweet is relevant and nothing goes wrong at all. Perhaps the 2 followers jealous of John because John makes big money? ;)

Market Samurai Review November 18, 2009 at 6:10 am

I don’t mind seeing sponsored tweets in my timeline, as long as it is not too many. Where do you set the border, John. How many sponsored tweets / unsponsored tweets would you feel are too many? SY

neelmoney November 17, 2009 at 11:50 am

Shoemoney is also traveling with the same ad.ly money . let us meet him. who knows I will be there soon….

Weight Loss Diet Plans November 17, 2009 at 12:19 pm

Dang, $1,000 for a single tweet, somehow I don’t think that will last.

John Chow November 17, 2009 at 12:24 pm

So you might as well get a piece of the action while the getting is good! :P

Benjamin Cip November 17, 2009 at 1:05 pm

I didn’t know that people could pay $1000 for just one tweet… it’s certainly because you are an authority because I don’t think they would pay that amount of money for everyone with the same number of followers.

Ms. Freeman November 17, 2009 at 7:16 pm

Heck yah I joined. I just joined Sponsored Tweets a few weeks ago also and I am already making money with it.

Lee Ka Hoong November 18, 2009 at 5:07 am

Cool! How much you made and how many followers do you have Freeman?

Peter November 17, 2009 at 12:33 pm

I have been a member of Ad.ly for a few months now and till today I have not received a single offer from advertisers, whereas with sponsored tweet I have been receiving offers. If you think Ad.ly is much better than S.T. please tell me what am I doing wrong coz I don’t see Ad.ly being any better.

ZK @ Web Marketing Blog November 19, 2009 at 3:42 pm

Gain your followers and be known to the public. You will get your offer.

Market Samurai Review November 17, 2009 at 1:01 pm

No luck nor with Adly nor with Sponsored Tweets so far for me ;-( SY

Benjamin Cip November 17, 2009 at 1:06 pm

Even I haven’t been active on twitter for age, I received some new follower, plus a sponsored tweet of $1 lol well, let’s see what will happen if I get active again.

Lee Ka Hoong November 17, 2009 at 5:08 pm

lol! You’re better that, I didn’t receive any offer even a $1 per tweet offer. I’m trying to increase the number of followers right now. :)

Greg Ellison November 17, 2009 at 1:22 pm

Shoe has made over $33,000 from Ad.ly. I haven’t received any but I don’t have the followers like him or you. I think most of my followers are bots so I think I have to delete them. I have to find better people to follow me. Greg Ellison

Cheap internet marketing ebooks November 17, 2009 at 1:31 pm

Wow, that is some serious money…

EdEntrepreneur-SBENCO November 17, 2009 at 1:50 pm

Sponsored Tweets has been decent. I signed up based on John’s recommendation. Definitely worthwhile. I am looking forward to see the activity on Ad.ly. the only part I don’t like so far is having to wait to get paid. Sponsored Tweets pays instantly upon hitting $50 (nice).

Kali November 17, 2009 at 2:26 pm

Twitter is a cool tool and it is very good for getting traffic, it will be very interesting to see what kind of traffic I can generate.

Dean Saliba November 17, 2009 at 3:46 pm

I joined these last night. I’d be happy with $1 a tweet. lol

Lee Ka Hoong November 17, 2009 at 4:58 pm

How many followers do you have Dean? I’m going to try this too as I have not much luck with Sponsored Tweets.

ZK @ Web Marketing Blog November 19, 2009 at 3:44 pm

Lee is keep asking from everyone that how many followers they have and if they have less than why I am not getting such offer.

Isn’t Lee ?

Lee Ka Hoong November 17, 2009 at 4:54 pm

$1000 for just a tweet? That’s a huge amount man I’m sure you’re going to hit the accept button in less than 10 seconds?

Anyway, congrats on the $1000 per offer, that’s great but with the number of followers you have, you deserve it John!

ZK @ Web Marketing Blog November 19, 2009 at 3:46 pm

John and Jeremy also invested good amount of time and money to gain so many followers … I still remember those contest … lolzz

Kevin Pasco November 17, 2009 at 4:56 pm

So far I’ve had 4 pffers from Sponsored Tweets, let’s see if I can top that with Ad.ly

Kevin Pasco November 17, 2009 at 4:56 pm

*Offers

Stupid keyboard!

Lee Ka Hoong November 17, 2009 at 5:01 pm

lol! No worry, as long as we understand what you’re talking about. :)

Between, how many followers do you have right now Kevin? I’ve yet to receive any offers from Sponsored Tweets yet.

Giovanni November 17, 2009 at 7:01 pm

Hmmn.. this has given me an idea :-) excellent

Dana @ Online Knowledge November 17, 2009 at 8:05 pm

Wow, ad.ly give such a big earning.

Manuel November 17, 2009 at 11:01 pm

$1000 for a single twit – very nice. Just signed up there after seeing a post on shoemoneys blog (seems he already made $33k with ad.ly)

Allan November 17, 2009 at 11:40 pm

I will have to look into this and see if this type of advertising will work for my sites

belajar paid review November 18, 2009 at 1:15 am

woww, it’s great, 1 tweet can make $1000.

Toan Nguyen Minh November 18, 2009 at 4:58 am

Wow congratulations Jonh :d I just wrote an article about Ad.ly referral program:

Gabe | freebloghelp.com November 18, 2009 at 5:35 am

That’s great news. I haven’t even hit $1k total at Ad.ly yet but it gives me something to look forward to.

Ignacio Neil November 18, 2009 at 8:18 am

A great option for the advertiser to use. He can advertise as well as tweet or just be happy twittering.

D. James Rice November 18, 2009 at 3:51 pm

Twitter is the bomb. Being that it is still pretty new to most, it’s a great way to connect to potential customers.

oes tsetnoc November 18, 2009 at 6:35 pm

$1000 for one Tweet? you really rock john! I think I’m gonna test this… but my followers are less than a hundred by now… :( maybe $0.0001 per tweet?

MLDina November 18, 2009 at 7:19 pm

Any plans for an in-depth comparison of SponsoredTweets and Ad.ly?

ZK @ Web Marketing Blog November 19, 2009 at 3:47 pm

Not at all …

Kalvster November 18, 2009 at 10:19 pm

Congratulations!

Andrew November 18, 2009 at 11:19 pm

Wow that is quite impressive. Congratulations.

fas November 19, 2009 at 12:40 am

That is some payment, $1000 per tweet, wow!

per-erik olsen November 19, 2009 at 10:40 am

That’s awesome John, And btw, thanks for writing your book on making money with your blog. I truly enjoyed it (and will adapt it)

Stefan November 19, 2009 at 9:31 pm

$1,000 for clicking a button…even only all the buttons I clicked gave me $1,000! Well done!

Constantine November 20, 2009 at 6:29 am

John, I remember back in January you encouraged those who havent joined twitter to do so ASAP. I ignored your advise, Am now looking back with regret. I joined twitter last week and now am in the rush of hunting for followers.

Love your blog. Good luck to every one here

Damian November 21, 2009 at 7:05 am

Thanks for the heads-up John!!! Does this require a certain age, or can you start immediately?

Agus November 21, 2009 at 1:50 pm

hi John,

Is that so easy as you said ? Is there any charge for that two links?

Could you tell me why tweeter is more powerful than other social networking media?

Tks John, u are my internet guru’s….

Stone Atwne November 22, 2009 at 2:09 am

Nice, that’s great money.

I signed up for both of them a while ago. Sponsored Tweets has so far offered $1 five times but I’m yet to get offers from Ad.ly.

I have about 270 followers. I think one’s ratio matters a lot. You might not get an offer even if you have 10,000 followers but follow 12,000 people.

Dino November 22, 2009 at 2:39 am

Signed Up for Ad.Ly but i haven’t gotten any type of sponsored tweet i lowered my price and everything not sure how many followers you need or the ratio in comparison to followers and following. But its worth a shot i suppose.

Rosa November 25, 2009 at 10:11 am

I have been rolling the dice on this one and coming out pretty good. Not near as good as John Chow but still proud of what I have made.

sastone November 25, 2009 at 11:14 am

Hi John

I love their referral program and hopefully the Twitterers with a small amount of followers will benefit from all this aswell not just the big cats, time will tell.

thanks for all the advice

CredFollow November 26, 2009 at 8:34 am

One great thing with John is that he replies to comment.

Joseph Alvini November 26, 2009 at 9:02 pm

I signed up for ad.ly and have yet to be matched with a sponsor.

Blog Tactic November 26, 2009 at 9:36 pm

You will only make money from sponsored tweets IF you have a huge Twitter following. Anyway, those brokers usually invite A-list Twitter user like JC.

Bill November 27, 2009 at 7:43 pm

awesome..i`m speechless :D

gagaukon December 4, 2009 at 6:12 am

i signed up with sponsoredtwets and ad.ly, but so far i earn some $$ with sponsoredtweets, ad.ly hv not yet match me with a sponsor. i signed up both the same time.

security war December 12, 2009 at 8:52 pm

Yes paying through paypal is an add advantage instead of check.

MatchesMalone December 13, 2009 at 6:45 am

I’m wary of stuff like this, as it may violate the Twitter TOS, as I’ve recently read them.

Guildford December 13, 2009 at 11:00 am

is that true usd 1000 for a click? i am a bit amazed.

abrablog December 14, 2009 at 11:50 am

Rajesh Kanuri @ TechCats December 15, 2009 at 11:38 am

Ad.ly is kewl.. 1000$ for a single tweet OMG i still cant believe this…

mini laptop December 16, 2009 at 2:53 am

Oh this is a great amount John. I never thought they would pay as much as this for one sponsored tweet. Well, this is the reason why I should concentrate in bringing more followers to my bag. I still can’t believe this.
