The Ad:Tech Show Floor

written by John Chow on April 15, 2008

How to make $593 in less than one hour

Here’s a quick video I put together from the Ad:Tech show floor. This will be the first of a bunch of videos I will be posting. I took a ton of footage with the little Flip and I’ll go through them later to figure out what to keep and what to throw away.

The Ad:Tech show floor is quite a bit bigger than the Affiliate Summit show floor. However, it’s still no where remotely close to CES. Many of the exhibitors at Affiliate Summit managed to make it to Ad:Tech. It was also nice to see many fellow bloggers making it to the event. I ran into Ian Fernado, Gyutae Park and many others while touring the floor.

why are you throwing cookies at people?

Michael Kwan April 15, 2008 at 4:26 pm

John may be in his 40s, but he acts like he’s 4. That would explain why he’s unemployable.

Not John Chow April 15, 2008 at 5:02 pm

If I had his success I would be 4 again too.

David April 15, 2008 at 5:53 pm

 I’m new to blog,John really did a great job.

Paolo U April 15, 2008 at 6:29 pm

If I ‘m like JOhn Chow then I wouldn’t want to be an employee.

Ed Lau April 15, 2008 at 11:01 pm

It’s true. Sometimes when we go places, you have to scold him like he’s a child.

Nicholas James April 16, 2008 at 4:26 am

That’s why he has to blog

Syed Balkhi April 16, 2008 at 1:17 pm

Lol there are some parts of your personality one should never loose and that is one part john shouldn’t loose because he won’t be john if he loses that.

John Chow April 15, 2008 at 5:06 pm

It’s not cookies. It’s a mini football.

Tyler Ingram April 15, 2008 at 5:12 pm

Then what were the things you were tossing over the display prior to the football? Or were you not really throwing them? ;)

John Chow April 15, 2008 at 5:19 pm

Those were mini footballs. Then I toss a full sized football.

Robert April 15, 2008 at 8:16 pm

Small mini footballs?

Wes Mahler April 17, 2008 at 2:43 am

LOL JOHN,
I saw u toss the small football but I can’t believe you tossed the REAL football! lol risk taking entrepreneur, your right on the edge of the stage like the speaker from kodac said lol haha

Chris Jacobson April 15, 2008 at 7:24 pm

The girl from offshoring.com was pretty cute. Can you hook me up, John?

Terry Tay April 15, 2008 at 10:21 pm

Perhaps you can inquire directly with OffShoring.com and say you will only deal with their company through the girl that was at the SF Ad-Tech Show

Michael Kwan April 15, 2008 at 4:22 pm

I see Bob.

car345.com April 15, 2008 at 4:32 pm

Pretty cool. Looks like he is having lot of fun throwing other’s stuff.

Ashley April 15, 2008 at 4:47 pm

Any good tid-bits so far? Have you learned any new tricks or gotten any good tips?

MR. NICE GUY April 15, 2008 at 4:51 pm

Hahaha. Great video John. So, what the Cotton Candy owner did to you after throwing one to the trash. Lol. Hahaha John Chow: The Controversial blogger.

Tyler Ingram April 15, 2008 at 5:14 pm

He didn’t throw it in the trash, he dropped it off to the side of a vendor’s display ;)

pennyblogger April 15, 2008 at 5:07 pm

so let me get this straight…. offshoring.com hires talented individuals from the phillipines, and slaves them off for cheap wages so that rich web entrepeneurs can save a buck… and can get someone else to fire them! wow.

other than that, the show looked pretty cool. would have been interesting.

Tyler Ingram April 15, 2008 at 5:17 pm

India does the same sort of thing. I’ve had people ask me to review their site of ‘talented web designers’ who get paid less than $5 per hour. For me pesonally, I like to sit down with a client and go over their website with them. If they were in the Philippines or India, I wouldn’t get that same personal interaction if I was working for someone over seas designing their website.

Ed Lau April 15, 2008 at 11:04 pm

Nothing wrong with that. If they could get a job with better wages where they’re from, I’m sure they would’ve done so. Since they can’t, they go through companies like that which hook them up with jobs here. Sure, it isn’t exactly fair but it’s work.

Terra Andersen April 15, 2008 at 5:11 pm

This looked fun. I wish I was there! I’m only a few hours away too. bad Terra! BAD!

Shawn Knight April 15, 2008 at 5:14 pm

Looks like you guys are having a good time :) I’ll be sure to hang out with you all more at CES hah. Oh BTW, nice shirt hah

Tyler Ingram April 15, 2008 at 5:19 pm

Is he wearing OCIA.net shirt?

Shawn Knight April 15, 2008 at 5:38 pm

yup

Jack April 15, 2008 at 5:59 pm

Thanks for the update John! I like the quick interviews of some of the lesser known companies with unique products. Keep em comin!

Affiliate Confession April 15, 2008 at 6:50 pm

John, I trust we will see at least one meal from a swanky restaurant in San Fran?

John Chow April 15, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Expect at least two!

Robert April 15, 2008 at 8:17 pm

Nice! I expect detailed pictures, descriptions of the meals, and a well-thought and commented review. Fine dining is the way to go, man.

Syed Balkhi April 16, 2008 at 1:14 pm

I am expecting to see those videos … I hope you are not ordering two … so you can throw one away at people

Not John Chow April 16, 2008 at 1:19 pm

He only throws stuff at Pandas (that’s the rumor).

Ashley April 15, 2008 at 8:16 pm

Forget the interviews – try and concentrate more on the comedy! Hurl more stuff. I think throwing some liquids might be in order. If you’re going to do interviews try and stick to “Da Ali-G” type of questions.

SiteHoppers April 15, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Hey John,

Thanks for the interview today, posted over here:

Dave from Welcome Back Rosenthal April 15, 2008 at 11:25 pm

Everything looks normal, and I’m watching and watching, normal, normal. Looks like any of the dozens of showbiz convention I used to go to in LA during my acting days THEN BOOM! John starts throwing stuff! Really caught me-and I’m sure somebody else-off guard there buddy.

Homebizseo by Greg April 16, 2008 at 12:02 am

You need to work on your football form internet guru Chow. The life and time of John Chow.

Infogle April 16, 2008 at 5:06 am

you thrown cookies or cake ? in the crowd

Affiliate Confession April 16, 2008 at 7:13 am

Offshoring.com looks pretty cool. Kind of like an Elance, but only you hire someone, it sounds like on an ongoing basis.

SiteHoppers April 16, 2008 at 7:20 am

Lol… John, you thought I was Gyutae,
I just e-mailed Gyutae to meet me today and he said he was not able to make it….

I was wearing Gyutae’s T-shirt. Lol….

James Wilcox April 16, 2008 at 10:32 am

So John, where are we having lunch today? I work right across from the Moscone Center :)

John Chow April 16, 2008 at 5:26 pm

I had lunch at Ad:Tech but I’m going to Michael Mina tonight.

Kanak Bhandari April 16, 2008 at 11:39 am

Hey john , are you sure youtube has not blocked you?? Every video you are uploading is giving “this video is no longer available” after 12-24 hours. Is this video also deleted ???

John Chow April 16, 2008 at 11:49 am

Video is working fine here. Could be a glitch on your end.

Syed Balkhi April 16, 2008 at 1:11 pm

dude you are crazy. Throwing things in the air lol.

DC April 17, 2008 at 12:21 am

What’s with these antics and bursts of jackass like antics? Was it just for the camera? When I walked by you yesterday it seemed like you were as tame as a snail with a dead serious face, wearing a monocle and a bolo tie while relaxing in the rubicon.

John Chow April 17, 2008 at 8:34 am

I don’t think that was me you walked by. I don’t wear ties at any trade shows.

DC April 17, 2008 at 6:32 pm

John I was just joking man. Wow that just blew back up in my face. But you were calm.
