The Dot Com Lifestyle
written by John Chow
Most people think the Dot Com lifestyle is about fast cars, exotic vacations, fine dining and partying all over the world. While that is all part of it, I want to show you what the Dot Com lifestyle is really about. The answer isn’t what you might think it is.
Anyone can join the Dot Com lifestyle. However, most will stay where they are because in nearly all cases, it will require a complete changing of one’s mindset. Changing a mindset is extremely hard to do. When you’ve been programmed since birth to do something a certain way (like get a good education so you can get a good job and work until you retire at 65), it almost goes against your nature when someone tells you there’s better way. For those who can do it, I welcome you to the Dot Com lifestyle club.

Nice video man. Everything you said, i agree with.
Nice video John!
yeah, really nice vid.
John, I was wondering, whether you make reviews on German speaking WS, too?
Cheers,
Experto
It’ll be pretty hard to review a German speaking website since neither myself nor Michael can understand German. And I think that would be true of most of the readership as well.
Why not just take the $500 and give it a shot. It would be hilarious and add a comical feel to this blog.
It would be unethical to do so. He could do it as a joke though…
That’s right John Everyone is dreaming for time and financial freedom but ony very few has achieved it including you. hehehe. The dotocm lifestyle indeed is very interesting.

Hey, no abusing the animals at Garden City Park! They’re gonna be needed soon at BBQ Master! LOL!
LOL
Lol… I couldn’t agree with you more. Ever since I stopped working at a 8 to 5 job 6 months ago, I do enjoy going to the groceries during the week and not have to fight others over the check out line.

This video touches on some of the things I cover in my recent blog post: Why Life is a Song, Not a Race. Even if you don’t partake in the “dot com lifestyle” per se, you mustn’t forget to live in the moment and live life. Don’t just chase this elusive thing called success, because you might miss out on the “now.” And if the “now” involves something as great as taking Sally for a leisurely stroll through the park, it’s something that you don’t want to miss.
Like you said: time + money = happiness
I face the some of the same issues w/ my parents. They learned how to do something 20 years ago and they don’t want to hear about a better way to do it. Then when they see their kid succeed, they are all for it!
I totally agree with this. I used to have a rough time with my parents as well.
Life is what you make as the favorite saying goes. What you decide today will be your life in the future. Choose the good life and you’ll enjoy every moment.
Nice video John. You mentioned you had the same lifestyle before the blog (I knew that already of course from TTZ). I’d be interested in reading some posts about your transition into TTZ…or if you did anything else BEFORE that to attain the same lifestyle.
Nice to see a video about you, and what makes you happy.
Thanks for sharing,
Stephen
I have to say, after watching that video again, I’m shifting my entrepreneurial efforts into overdrive.
Couldn’t agree with you more. This lifestyle is completely attainable to those who consistently work towards it.
If anyone is in the Toronto area, I’d be glad to build a network.

You touched me, man. [Group hug]
But you’re making butt-loads of money and this gives you the freedom to stop and reflect on the passing geese. Truth is, money give you time and freedom.
Money can’t buy you love, but it can buy you the time to find love.
Good for you John. I still believe in your principles, even if you sometimes pretend to be someone else.
It’s great that you get to spend more time with your daughter. You are right about everyone having to work and they send their kids to day care. Kids grow up so fast and they will be gone before you know it so spending as much time with them when they’re young is important.
Oh…I hope you checked Sally’s and your shoes before you went home. Those Canada Geese can leave behind some dog sized…well…you know
~Terry
The dot com lifestyle is about your children I’ll totally agree with that. If I ever “make it” like you have John or even a percent of what you have done, it will help my little Belle more than me.
I do have to input that “Daycares do go to the park”
My wife has a daycare in our house. BUT I get where you are coming from. I do live in a nice neighborhood where it’s easy access.
I completely agree with you on the matter of day care. My wife has recently become pregnant. My goal is to allow her to stay home and raise our children. This goal that once seemed unobtainable is coming closer to becoming a reality. My new goal is to be able to be at home as well. I have been pretty successful buying and selling products online, but with your inspiring words I will be focusing greatly on blogging and review style websites.
Great video, John. For me, this is my dream. I’d love to one day (once I start a family which is still a while away for me) be able to spend a lot of time with my family and not be tied to an office cubicle. I’d hate to be the typical dad/husband that you see on TV that is away from the house 95% of the time.
Maybe one day I’ll get to reap (and share with family) the benefits of a true dot com lifestyle - I’ll see how that goes.
John– you are right to some extent.
It only applies to those who are successful in blogging, not really for those who are struggling blogging–
But yes its great to be with the family.
I myself work from home and i enjoy with being with kids. And I love the schedule.
Maybe everyone can trade stocks for a living?
I would disagree. I lead the Dot Com lifestyle, and although I do not make near as much as John, I don’t make money from my blog, but rather by running a tech site. You can make money online besides with a blog
I agree. Money does not fall from tress, and the truth is most people won’t earn money online no matter how hard they try. That’s a reality people should just deal with. The fact of the matter is it takes time, time, time and dedication to play this game we call the internet. Most people are just not game. For those who stick around they know how hard making the almighty dollar is on the net. I know I do. So there you guys have it. The truth.
This is the best blog post you have posted in the 7 months I’ve been reading you blog. Truly measures up to what life should is about. Congrats!
hey john,
do you use regular windows movie maker or iMovie for your videos?
I use iMovie. It’s way way better than Windows Movie Maker.
The best software to do videos is Adobe Premiere. There is so many features that you need a course to go through everything…
I do have Premiere. And you’re right. I would need to take a class to figure out how to use it.
I think the Mac, iMovie can produce better quality.
Great post John and very inspirational. Something to shoot for. Thanks for sharing a special part of your day with us.
John that was a great video. I just became a reader a week ago and your blog provides a lot of wisdom and reminds us of what life is about.
dot com life style???
nice video ya=)
thx sharing also=p
John, I want to tell you that this video almost made me cry. I don’t know why but this video touched me to make me realize what life is all about. I also realized how such a great man you are, which I already did a post about on how you’re not evil ;).
This post/video post here is one of your best work yet.
Good luck to you and your family!
-Mike
I agree to this and i believe this video with be cherish for a long time
Best blog post about blogging and making money online. Ever.
And it’s pretty darn good post about a couple of other things too.
Thanks, John. I hope everybody sees this.
Hey John, this video by far is the most inspiring thing you’ve ever posted in my opinion. I totally agree with you regarding the time freedom thing. I’ve made the decision and commitment to pursue this type of lifestyle as well this month. I just wrote an article that touches on a very similar topic to this just before visiting your site today ( How to make money as a lightworker ) and I’m so excited knowing that soon I’ll be able to enjoy the simple things you talk about like going to the park.
Awesome.
Oops, it didn’t close the link tag.
I wrote about this on my blog. The accumulation of money and wealth isn’t about money as an object. People like to say that money can’t buy happiness. Well, YES it does. Money is simply a means to an end. It buys you time for you to spend with your family. That’s what it’s all about.
John, thanks for sharing this video…
Its very nice.
Just subscribe your newsletter,
and don’t want miss any nice article…
Take a Bow… for this video… Extremely good i am online because of these reasons only. Excellent Stuff
Yup, for us that are in it for the same reasons as John outlined in the video it really hits home. For others it may not resonate with them at all.
Awesome job John. Do more like this to keep us inspired.
JC, if you live in Malaysia as blogger, malaysian people will vote you during general election, for a parliament seat! and of course u will win with majority.

Dude…. That’s true… Like Jeff (www.jeffooi.com) and Tony Pua (http://tonypua.blogspot.com) ?? Haha…. I’ve been following their blogs too

I’ve been living the dotcom lifestyle now for almost a decade. Benefits I’ve found is that when I choose, my time is my own and I can focus on my kids and husband. Negatives I’ve encountered if you don’t plan wisely, the whims of Google and other search engines can really wreak havoc with your online income.
It’s all a learning opportunity of massive proportions. Thanks for sharing.
Barbara
Simply the best, wisest and most inspiring blog post I’ve seen in a long time. Good stuff, John. I hope everyone sees this.
I totally agree with what you said in this video! I really really hope one day I can quit my day job and have a Dot Com Lifestyle like you too!
NIce video!
Okay John, now I’m completely jealous, not of the lifestyle, but of that sweet slide in the park. Why wasn’t anyone building slides like that when I was a kid? Sally’s pretty brave, that thing would have scared the crap out of me at her age.
Your daughter is cure John, I do have daughter but she is still too young to talk
What you have said is encouraging but its all about the time and one lucky moment
you know..
oh there is a type - lol - CUTE instead of cure..
