The Impact of Mobile Usage on Internet Marketing

The emergence of mobile devices and applications has undoubtedly had an incredible impact on internet marketing. Consequently, blog and website owners who do not presently have access to mobile users should start thinking seriously about doing so. Recent research showed that sales conversion ratio on mobiles were higher than they were on conventional devices. A Google survey indicated that 61% of mobile users were more likely to contact a business after viewing their website or blog.

Mobile and handheld devices that a typical mobile internet surfer uses include BlackBerry Windows Mobile, Smartphone and iPhone. There are many platforms and browsers available to mobile users. The operating systems available include Apple’s iOS and Google’s Andriod. Browsers are quite diverse, and in addition to those available on laptops and desktops, there’re also Opera, Kindle, Netfront and many others.

Mobile usage is 24/7. Therefore even after mobile Internet users switch off their desktops and laptops, they often continue to view mobile content until they fall asleep. User response can be tracked instantaneously. This helps a blog or website owner to analyse the behaviour of users and hence rapidly adapt and improve the quality of service. Also mobile device contents can be easily shared amongst users, therefore marketing can have a massive effect if utilised effectively. Bear in mind also that mobile marketing is still in its infancy, consequently there’s a considerable potential to be exploited.

In 2011, Smartphone and tablet shipments exceeded those of notebooks and desktops. And the total amount of time spent using mobile apps now exceeds time spent using desktops.

The mobile network company Ericsson recently released the following data relating to mobile device usage:

  • The total number of Smartphone users tripled in 2011.
  • Mobile broadband subscriptions increased by 60 percent to 900 million at the end of 2011.
  • Predicts that the number of subscribers will exceed 5 billion by 2015.

With knowledge of these staggering figures, I suggest it’s worth paying a bit of attention to mobile device usage and applications.

Tips for Greater Access to Mobile Users.

  • Optimize your blog or website to ensure it is properly displayed on different mobile platforms and operating systems – similar to how you optimize your site for desktop and laptop browsers.
  • If you’re a blog owner, there’re free services available that can transform your blog into iPhone, Andriod and other mobile applications which will subsequently give you access to mobile users.
  • Be mindful of the screen size and adjust your content accordingly to improve user experience, whilst remembering to include your keywords in your revised version.
  • Keep in mind that the popular search terms in mobiles are different from those on desktops and laptops. A bit of research in that aspect is highly recommended.

The diversity of the operating systems and browsers makes it difficult to create a single mobile marketing campaign. Also, because of the smallness of mobile devices and the lack of a mouse, it makes navigation difficult, even on those with touch screens – users might find it laborious to view an advert on a small screen device. Given the rapid pace at which the technology is progressing, I anticipate that those limitations will be eliminated in the not too distant future.
