A while back, I made a video post call The Dot Com Lifestyle that showed what can be achieve if someone is willing to change his mindset and really go for it. That post was one of the most popular posts I’ve ever made and received a ton of positive feedback.

One of the readers who read the post was Brian Johnson. Brian lives in Nebraska and I had a chance to meet him during the Top Affiliate Challenge. Inspired by my Dot Com Lifestyle video, Brian decided to create his own Dot Com Lifestyle video. It’s a little different than my lifestyle but the goal is the same. I’ve posted both videos so you can compare. Which Dot Com Lifestyle are you living right now?

your video is better than brian

I think Brian’s video is hilarious, and sad. Now, I don’t really know what to feel now.

Brian's is more like it...I love "you have to loose money to make money!"

My dot.com is a perfect nada. No money, no time, nothing. I must be a real monkey after all.

I wager video #2 is a little more accurate of the lives of most readers of this blog.

John your lifestyle is even better than the Wall St bankers who earn a disproportionate amount of money even when all their investors lose. You make a lot of money for working intelligently and you don't have to steal a penny. Bravo

No offense, money is everything. No way anyone would be able to just kick at home and play dad all day if they didn't have the money to avoid the regular working world. Blogging is the exception; and is an exceptional industry in what it allows for.

I want to live the john chow dot com lifestyle!

The second video is a much better picture of the "average dot com lifestyle" . It is great that John Chow gets to spend much of his day in the park with his daughter, but the reality of it is that most of us are in the developmental stages with our blogs, and the John Chow dot com lifestyle just isn't in the near future for us. Keep plugging away...

I like it a lot. The way one he mimics John Chow's dot com lifestyle while wearing a shoemoney t-shirt (and bought it, didn't even win it!) to saying he will be up all night to make up his two dollars for Red Bull. Love it.

Interesting facts to know about each. :)

I remember your post. Your video was good. While everyone else was working, you were able to go to the park with your daughter. Living the Dot Com Lifestyle is a wonderful thing.

Brian's video is comedic!

Hmmm, interesting. The videos are a good example of the Pro Blogger and a New blogger. Once you have been blogging for a few months your video may show pulling hair, shuffling for stories, writers block etc..... We need comedy :)

Hmmm.....still eating ramen noodles here......

Pretty nice.. You have good life.. John.. Congrats.. You have money, you have wife.. you have kids. cool.. and I ?:)) I'm a poor student >:P :) Time to time.. come to my blog.. and give me some advice.. I need.. Thanks.. http://www.you-v.com

Great videos! Brian's was hilarious! I really enjoyed watching the difference in the dot com lifestyles between you and Brian. Thanks so much for posting these!

Haha that was so funny :D, great post loved it ;)

very funny stuff, but john your video is much better! ;-)

regards, Sirko

Everyone is little different. my thought was to actually take this one step further and make an informercial...sort of like Obama did last night

John,

Nice easy day at the park. One of my dreams even though our youngest is a tween now.

I've spent thirty years of 12~14 hour days, in Hollywood and engineering design and build of digital tv and film facilities, and now the day job has vanished...

Trying to figure out all of this PPC, CPA, CPM, and web marketing has been frustrating to say the least!

Maybe I can find a sharp mentor who can set me up for the dot com lifestyle?

Respectfully, Nicholas Chase - 'the video guy' at BlogWorld Expo 2008

Funny video!!!! I am working hard so maybe some day I can have that life style.

Brian should be a comedian! The BK coupon cracked me up :)

You both got supercute babies!

What's even better is I literally found that while we were walking. Another interesting thing was I did not know the mowers were at the park either LoL. It was fate.

That's pretty funny -
your girl is so cute, she kept looking at the camera and then at you!
She was really trying to figure out what the heck was going on.

So, when do we get to see part 2?

lol, that was awesome.

Hmm... making friendly parodies of the top bloggers videos - great idea for a blog.... *hint hint*!

I thik I like your dot com lifestyle better John.

First you want to have more money, and when you eventually get the money you want to have other things. Better health and more time etc, I like to read John's blog it has depth in it.

I guess, re-runs also exist on the internet.

I still love Mr. John Chow's video more! :D

Nice post. Not for me tho.

Very nice video John.

I look forward to watch the next episode.

Mario

Interesting sincere heartfelt sharing in the video. It is good that with the internet and blogging, we can have both time and money to do the things that we enjoy.

In a typical domain name you have two dots....Dots use to be called "stop" or "rests"...So the lesson is to pace ourselves and take rests and stop to smell the roses in the midst of the journey. :P Sorry - that wonderful lil enlightenment hit me now at 1am and I just had to share after watching the vid and reading everyone's comments :P

Haha I wish I had a Life style spend time with my family

Oh man, Brian's video is hilarious. And sad. Now, I don't know what to feel...

LOL at make up the 2 dollars by working all night.

My .com lifestyle is great right now :) Total freedom plus working on the things that are also my hobbies. So it can't get better then that.

I'm sure "Brain" appreciates the name change too... :)

No one said it was the rich dot com lifestyle. I guess it's all in your perception. :)

Indeed... the .com lifestyle is business lifestyle... the other aspect is that which is so much older (family 9.0 is well entrenched, lest we forget) and far more valuable.

While we may aspire to 9 figure EBITDA numbers and 6 figure daily uniques for site traffic, it all means very little when it comes down to the true accomplishments in life: our family (children, in particular) and true friends who will be there when we fall back down to 2-3 uniques per day ;)

Proof in the pudding is the uber-entrepeneur: Larry Ellison... he's only worth perhaps $20-30B given the recent market correction and yet, you can be sure that it hits his psyche and wellbeing in a major way.... (and I say this as a huge Oracle and Larry respecter)....

Keeping values in perspective is a primordial concern.....

Man I really wish I could live that lifestyle. I have a couple of websites and I get 100-200 bucks a month from it. I just want to get more you know and quit my job.

Nice video, its kinddaa slow

LOL, maybe if Bryan didn't have a betting blog his video would be like yours John.

Oh John! Your daughter is so perfect. I really enjoyed your video and am glad to hear the ring of sincerity in your voice as you speak about the true treasures of life. I hope you may come by for a visit sometime. Take care.

"Sleeping Kitten - Dancing Dog!"

Thanks a lot John for showing my video. I totally forgot about the video when I met up with you. I'm glad you found it somehow. I have summers off and it just came to me as I was taking my daughter on our daily walk. So I planned a few things to do and it went ok. LoL

The dot com lifestyle definitely has it's perks; especially raising a family! My girls and I love that we're able to spend more time together.

Gotta love what the dot com lifestyle provides. Today it can be tougher then ever to make ends meet and keep the Pig Full; having a blog and creating a secondary or primary source of income can really help pay the bills!

Funny and sad at the same time; I think that's most of us. lol
