The Winner Of The Junk Contest & A New Contest

written by John Chow on January 15, 2007

How to make $593 in less than one hour

Congrats goes out to Eric Meeks of Modern Self. Eric is the proud new owner of an ECS fountain pen and 128MB USB Flash Drive. Eric’s name was drawn from the 184 people who had me in their Technorati favorites. Thanks go out to everyone who entered the contest.

Now that the contest is over, it’s time to start another one. This time I have a much better prize up for grabs. OCZ Technology is one of the leading memory manufacturers in the world and during their CES party, they gave me the world’s smallest USB 2.0 Flash Drive. When I say small, I’m talking about physical size and not capacity. The drive maybe tiny but it offers 1 GB of storage. To give you an idea how small this thing is, here’s a pic of it next to my business card.

The rules of this contest is the same as the last one – just add John Chow dot Com to your Technorati favorites and you are entered. If you are one of the 184 who already have this blog in your Technorati favorites, then you get a bonus – your name gets entered twice in the draw box. Consider it a thank you for entering the “junk” contest.

On Friday, I will draw a random name from the box and that person will win the OCZ 1GB Roadster Drive, the world’s smallest USB 2.0 flash drive. The winner will be announced in a new post, and if he or she has a blog, a link to his or her blog will be posted as well.

Good luck and enter now!

Not only is it small but it works like a switchblade!

I don’t think they can get any smaller ’cause this thing is not much bigger then the USB plug!!!

Hannes Johnson January 15, 2007 at 6:13 pm

Alright! Cool flash drive – I definitely want the world’s smallest USB 2.0 flash drive – and now I have 2 “tickets” :) Yay!

Thomas January 15, 2007 at 6:15 pm

These Roadsters are pretty nice. I’ve reviewed one of them a while ago and I like it, although the performance is quite low compared to some of OCZ’s other flash sticks.

Great way to promote your site John.

Ryan January 15, 2007 at 6:37 pm

Thanks for the double entry, nice going those of you that didn’t enter until now. :D

Much better than the 1st one.

Michael January 15, 2007 at 6:47 pm

Sweet prize. The linkback is an awesome bonus.

You seem like a down to earth guy, glad I found your site.

Michael

David Mackey January 15, 2007 at 6:55 pm

Andy January 15, 2007 at 7:54 pm

Great new contest – I hope I win this one

Stew January 15, 2007 at 7:58 pm

I’m feeling lucky this time around

Dan January 15, 2007 at 8:03 pm

Now this is worth entering:) I am IN.

Jane January 15, 2007 at 8:17 pm

Hahaha…I saw the last line of you post…

“and if he or she has a blog, a link to his or her blog will be posted as well.”

I like the inclusion. But don’t feel obligated to include the “she” or “her” in there….I write using the masculine form anyway.

This USB looks about the size of my Canon’s SD memory card. NICE!

Nick Witkoski January 15, 2007 at 8:33 pm

that one is mine!!!

Alex Becker January 15, 2007 at 8:46 pm

Jane how did you come out of nowhere to get 1st place in the comment war?

My New Choice January 15, 2007 at 8:50 pm

Sweet, while I would be happy with any crappy prize this is one that would actually be really cool to win.

Gdog January 15, 2007 at 8:52 pm

Nice, thanks again John! I hope I win. :)

Juan Francisco Diez January 15, 2007 at 9:04 pm

I copied your idea, and I´m giving away the OCZ Mega-Kart I swapped you :D

But it´s a spam contest not technorati :P

baron January 15, 2007 at 9:13 pm

I want that! Are you shipping anywhere in the world?

Nick Witkoski January 15, 2007 at 9:59 pm

Alex Becker: Maybe we have a scoreboard whore on the loose, i noticed that as well…

John Chow January 15, 2007 at 10:14 pm

Baron – Yes, I will ship it to wherever the winner is at.

Nenad Ristic January 15, 2007 at 10:34 pm

I have wanted one o0f those ever since I first heard about it (it was on a list of strangest USB drives)… And now I have a chance to get it.

The rest of you go away, its mine, all mine!!!

Raghu January 15, 2007 at 11:24 pm

Have already done that – you are on my favourites. Hope I win it this time round.

Once again – Good Idea John.

Ed Lau January 15, 2007 at 11:46 pm

I helped pick the winner!

At random…

Nomar January 16, 2007 at 4:51 am

congrats on the price modernself

Jane January 16, 2007 at 5:59 am

Alex,

I noticed you guys having all the fun. Figured it was about time to add a little diversity to the show :)

Nick,

I like scoreboards, infact I would tell people to look at it frequently when I used to play sports. But I don’t like them THAT much
;)

Ryan January 16, 2007 at 6:27 am

John, will you be filling it with CES pics? :D

Leftblank January 16, 2007 at 9:16 am

Too bad I didn’t win the first time, but at least that means I’ve got a bigger chance of winning this hot gadget – thanks John!

Eric (modernself.com) January 16, 2007 at 9:29 am

Woo Hoo, I won. Sadly I won the crappy prize. I guess the prize I was really going for was the link back, so for that I am truly grateful.

Actually I am mostly grateful for the information in this blog. It has turned me on to how the blogging game is played and with it my blog has skyrocketed (and not just from John Chow link backs).

Question: Does anyone know the effects of “favorites” on your technorati ranking? Do they even contribute to it, and if so how much weight are they given?

Question 2: Is there significantly less weight given to multiple linkbacks from the same source on technorati? In other words is it more important to have more links from different blogs or just more links even though it might be from fewer blogs?

HMTKSteve January 16, 2007 at 9:38 am

This is something I would have submitted to Digg… If you were not banned that is…

WesleyTech.com January 16, 2007 at 9:44 am

Sweet, a decent prize this time. Although last time I mainly entered for a chance to ‘win’ the link back. ;)

Ryan January 16, 2007 at 9:54 am

Maybe submit this to blogg-buzz?

baron January 16, 2007 at 10:15 am

I hear http://www.stumbleupon.com also gives you good traffic. It’s also more in line with user preferences as it’s tailored to the individual. No spamblocking either.

Hannes Johnson January 16, 2007 at 12:31 pm

Eric – I don’t know if “favorites” helps you. I would be interested if anybody had some details about that. But it certainly doesn’t hurt ;)

2. Yes, when looking through the rankings of various blogs on Technorati it looks like having 1000 of links from 1 or 2 blogs doesn’t help you much – I think they mainly count how many different blogs are linking to you.

Michael Kwan January 16, 2007 at 2:47 pm

Sweet. Added you to my Technorati favorites. In fact, you’re my only favorite as I only signed up with technorati so that I could claim my blog.

Ajay January 16, 2007 at 11:02 pm

Can I win please, can I win!!! :D

So since I already added you to my favorites sometime back, so I get two entries into the contest?

Indi Scoop January 17, 2007 at 8:35 am

I have two tickets too

Michael Kwan January 17, 2007 at 5:01 pm

Any update on how many entries you have so far, John?

Hannes Johnson January 17, 2007 at 5:16 pm

Well, the stats say “Favorited by: 213 members” – and he had 184 before – so total entries would be (2 x 184) + (213-184) = 397 entries :)

Ramanathan January 19, 2007 at 6:47 am

Nice marketing and fun contest. I entered too. You blog is surely my favorite, even without contest.

:-)
