The World’s Thinnest Building
written by John Chow on February 18th, 2007

Today, I took the family to Chinatown for the Chinese New Year celebration. Vancouver’s Chinatown is home to the world’s thinnest building. It is so thin, I can stretch out my arms and reach either ends of the building.
The world’s thinnest building is home to Jack Chow Insurance. Jack (no relation to me as far as I know) uses the building as part of his promotional tool when trying to sell insurance. People going to the building to buy insurance from Jack may find the inside a bit cramp however. It’s pretty much standing room only. Here is a picture of the inside.

I’ll have photos from the Chinese New Year celebration later.

Reply to this commentSo, how many stories is it?
Reply to this commentTwo stories. I met Jack Chow. He came out and took that above picture.
Reply to this commentIt’s surprising that such a thin building can hold 2 stories.. but then concrete is a strong thing.
Reply to this commentthat is really small, cool
Reply to this commentGung Hay Fat Choy, John Chow! If anyone is visiting Vancouver, you must visit Victoria and see their Chinatown, as it’s Canada’s oldest and smallest.
Reply to this commentOldest yet smallest? what an oxymoron.
Reply to this commentWow and I thought my apartment was small…
Reply to this commentHappy Chinese New Year John… from all over here at Techzoogle!
Reply to this commentThat’s a great marketing tool. All kinds of possibilities aside from the obvious. Looks like a large bus stop
Reply to this commentHeh, sure thing, I bet it’s quite an attention seeker from the outside though, it looks pretty funny from the side as well.
Reply to this commentCrazy small.. reminds me of the new Red Brick Coho homes (in Pitt Meadows) they have by my work. They are literally 20 feet across, though they are 3 stories (1st floor being front door and garage at the back.
Though that building only being like 6-6.5ft in width is tiny!
Reply to this commentThough I wonder what his monthly rent on that place is!
Reply to this commentRent is zero. Jack Chow owns the building.
Reply to this commentThis is a really cool building, I took a bunch of photos there when I was there. On the sidewalk if I remember correctly, it looks like there is office space underneath. Is that part of the Jack Chow Insurance building?
Reply to this commentThats crazy, I’ll have to check it out over summer when I come to Canada - lol.

Reply to this commentHmm… world’s thinnest building - is that according to Guinness World Records?
So, does he use that a lot to promote his business - does he have a huge sign that says “World’s Thinnest Building!”?
Reply to this commentwow…that is really small…I’ve known about it, but never made the trip down to see it.
Reply to this commentWhen he makes his sales pitch does he tell the customer that he saves a bundle on insurance because he has so few square feet to insure?
