Top Affiliate Challenge Contestants Selected

written by John Chow on June 16, 2008

How one lazy bum made $176,697.50

Congratulations to the following 12 Top Affiliate Challenge contestants. After months of hard work and campaigning, these 12 beat out hundreds of other contestants to make it to the show.

  • Ty Hurd
  • Big Jason Henderson
  • Jonathan Van Clute
  • Devin Hunter
  • Tom “the Furry Hat Guy”
  • Jani Gaffor
  • Jonathan Ryan
  • Carl Zetterlund
  • Chad Van Norman
  • Ronda Del Boccio
  • Collin Lahay
  • Ian Fernando

Now that the contestants have been selected, the fun can really begin. The 12 contestants will be flown to Lincoln, Nebraska at the end of the month to begin their two week challenge to see who will be the Top Affiliate. The contestants will be divided into three teams. Each team will be lead by either myself, Shoemoney or Ken McArthur.

I’m really looking forward to this competition. I’ve reviewed the audition videos of all the contestants and I would be happy to have anyone of them on my team. The first episode of Top Affiliate Challenge will air in the first week of July. Make sure you tune in and cheer for my team!

Other than filming the show and punching a cow, I wonder what else is there to do in Lincoln, Nebraska?

Affiliate Confession June 16, 2008 at 8:05 pm

I’m looking forward to hearing about what the evil one himself is teaching everyone.

big jason June 16, 2008 at 8:07 pm

and here I thought Shoemoney was the evil one!!!

Affiliate Confession June 16, 2008 at 8:16 pm

I think Chow and Shoemoney should have a competition to see who is more evil.

big jason June 16, 2008 at 8:45 pm

how much money can your team make in 24 hours? I think we’ll be seeing some “evil” or at least the fruits of it. ;)

jackson vs griffin ufc is july 5th during filming. if thor doesn’t milk that for all its worth, he’s crazy.

Abdul June 16, 2008 at 10:18 pm

I hope Ian wins!

Ian Fernando June 17, 2008 at 2:31 am

thanks abdul!

Thiago Prado June 17, 2008 at 4:23 am

Yeah he was very brave and lucky because he’s in 56th position last week and jumped to 12th. Congrats!

Affiliate Confession June 16, 2008 at 6:46 pm

Congratulations to Collin Lahay for making it as well. Very informative blog Colln has there.

Collin LaHay June 16, 2008 at 10:52 pm

Thanks Alan, I appreciate the comment.

I’m sure a couple of them were on Joel Comm’s version of the Apprentice on the web last summer.

Abdul June 16, 2008 at 10:20 pm

Ganesh June 16, 2008 at 6:56 pm

Hey John, what sort of contest is this. I mean, do you lead a team and try to make the most affiliate sales?

Collin LaHay June 16, 2008 at 10:59 pm

Yes. John Chow, Shoemoney, and Ken McArthur will each be leading a team of (predictably 4) contestants to find the best affiliate marketer.

big jason June 16, 2008 at 7:00 pm

i’m actually looking forward to tipping some cows and eating a lot of creamed corn john! ;) see you soon
big jason

Collin LaHay June 16, 2008 at 10:54 pm

Maybe one of our competitions involves selling the most cans of creamed corn for our team? Get a nice local word of mouth campaign going. :-)

See you in Nebraska.

big jason June 16, 2008 at 11:01 pm

hahaha. that would be funny. with me at 6’11″ and you at 18, we could pretend to be a father/son team and clean up at that. ;)

Collin LaHay June 16, 2008 at 11:30 pm

hahahah

Tom - StandOutBlogger.com June 16, 2008 at 7:01 pm

Congratulations to all the contestants! I’m sure they are all going to learn heaps!

Collin LaHay June 16, 2008 at 11:00 pm

Well the idea is for the viewers to learn heaps as well, but there is no doubt in anyones mind that we will all learn a lot.

Hope you learn something yourself Tom. :-)

Timon Weller of Buyers Web June 16, 2008 at 7:10 pm

Shanel Yang June 16, 2008 at 8:15 pm

I’m a huge fan of The Apprentice, so I’ll have to stay tuned for this exciting contest. Hmm. Lots of interesting stuff going on here!

Abdul June 16, 2008 at 10:23 pm

Is this going to be aired on TV, and is John going there as well?

Not JohnChow June 17, 2008 at 3:47 am

TV would be great! How about it John? I am sure you could get someone in the mainstream to bite!

Tom June 16, 2008 at 8:26 pm

One word… “waverly” it’s about 20 min outside of Lincoln. It will be time well spent :) .

Chad June 16, 2008 at 9:04 pm

Seriously it’s in Nebraska?

Affiliate Confession June 16, 2008 at 9:34 pm

Yep, Nebraska. Nothin’ there but plains, cows, corn and Shoemoney.

big jason June 16, 2008 at 10:19 pm

Abdul June 16, 2008 at 10:21 pm

Shoemoney?? Shoemoney lives in Nebraska?

Collin LaHay June 16, 2008 at 11:02 pm

So it has everything a state needs then? …kidding.

Binary Ant June 17, 2008 at 8:04 am

hahaha this comment was funny Alan. I was wondering if the 12 marketers will stay at Shoemoney’s house. Take a picture with his logo at the bottom of the swimming pool!!

bob June 16, 2008 at 9:47 pm

Thought I would let you know Mr. Chow. Some one is going around trying to pretend hes you. I believe he may be trying to scam people. Hes using the Email “webmaster@johnchow.com”. I have screenies up on a blog http://www.onetweak.com. I would try taking over that email so no one else gets scammed.

Tom June 16, 2008 at 10:12 pm

for the record… Nebraska does have cities, the cows are just between the cities :)

Jonathan van Clute June 16, 2008 at 11:05 pm

Hi John & company! Jonathan here… looking forward to meeting everyone in Lincoln. I can’t believe it’s coming up so soon, SOOOO much to do before I leave!! Ack!!

THe only flaw that I see in this challenge is that a lot of the contestants had paid “super votes” to get their rank. I believe that voting should be done fairly, but a person with money could just win the ranks on voting lol

-Mike

big jason June 16, 2008 at 11:19 pm

i talked about that today on the gary james show. contestants who were complaining about this were actually the ones doing it!!! ROFL!

Bunny Killer June 17, 2008 at 6:48 pm
Collin LaHay June 16, 2008 at 11:37 pm

That is not always true, Gaj had over $1500 in supervotes (300+ of them), and he came in 11th. The supervotes were all about adding a little more strategy to the voting process, because if you really think about it, paying $200 for adverting on some popular site requesting that the readers voted you a 10/10 would indirectly be “buying your way onto the show,” but in reality it would just be smart marketing.

At the end of the day, it is all a matter of opinion. However, I believe sometimes you just have to spend money to make money.

big jason June 16, 2008 at 11:48 pm

yep. while people were complaining, gaj, jonathan van clute and myself were kicking some serious ass seperating people from $5 and more at a time with marketing. just think if thor had made it posible to enter the amount you wanted to pay or a dropdown of multiples of $5. ;)

Juan Burton June 17, 2008 at 1:58 am

Just wanted to say Good Luck to all of the Contestants. I hope you all enjoy yourselves, have fun, nextwork with each other, partnership, and prosper.

Yours Truely,
Juan

big jason June 17, 2008 at 8:39 am

thanks juan. should be a blast.

Sounds exciting! I’m glad Ty Hurd made it, he’s been working hard to get votes! :P

Ty Hurd June 17, 2008 at 12:52 pm

Hey SB – thanks for the support! I’m looking forward to the show TONS, can’t wait to learn from the masters! This is gonna be a wild ride…

Dave from Welcome Back Rosenthal June 17, 2008 at 11:07 am

Hey this is funny I just found Ian’s site for the first time a couple of nights ago and had a great time looking at his skill. Such a young guy!

But from what I can tell Collin has a lot of know-how so that’s going to be tough to beat (although I never could get that Hugger thing to work).

Collin LaHay June 17, 2008 at 12:09 pm

Thanks Dave, Yeah both of those sites had a few bugs in them, as well as being too optimized for tech-savvy people that I could have lost a lot of potential customers. It was a great learning experience however for my upcoming projects.

Chad Van Norman June 17, 2008 at 12:14 pm

Thanks for the post

Hi John,

I’m probably biased on who I’d like to win The Top Affiliate Challenge.

As I live in London UK my I’m backing Jani (also from the UK  ) who I also know from his online marketing businesses.

Just my 2 cents.

let the best man or woman win!
