Top Ways To Drive Traffic To Your Blog

written by John Chow on September 9, 2007

How one lazy bum made $176,697.50

Traffic is the foundation of making money online. Without traffic, nothing happens. What are the top ways to drive traffic to your blog? I discussed that very topic in my third interview on The Lab with Leo Laporte.

This interview was taped back in July but aired last week. It took this long to finally find the episode and put it on YouTube. Thanks to Greg Morgan for doing all the leg work to get this done. If you compare this interview to my first interview with Leo, you’ll see I’m a lot more relaxed. I must be getting use to the limelight.

Enjoy the video on building traffic. I hope it helps you. Please note: the video is grayed out for the first five seconds. I don’t know why, but it clears up after that.

The view is a bit screwed John, i see gray all over.

Blogs For Money September 9, 2007 at 9:47 am

Hmmm, fixed itself a few moments in :)

Blogs For Money September 9, 2007 at 9:58 am

Great video, but that guy Leo really likes to finish your sentences, doesn’t he! :(

I didn’t know you had a free ebook either! And now I see it’s at the top of every page I feel silly!

Make Money Blogging September 9, 2007 at 11:17 am

I actually thing that’s part of how he does his shows. It’s not so much finishes John’s sentences as much as it is him just getting into the interview.

Blogs For Money September 9, 2007 at 11:50 am

It was just a bit annoying (and rude). I wanted to hear what John had to say and he kept butting in!! Grrrr..

DeboHobo September 10, 2007 at 11:16 am

Why did Leo say he didn’t know John had an Ebook, that made him look really stupid. John spoke about the book on his last show. Doh!

DeboHobo September 10, 2007 at 11:23 am

P.S. John you looked really great in this interview. You were definitely more confident this time around.

Do you have time to do an interview for my blog?

TheDirectoryDude September 9, 2007 at 9:44 pm

Yeah, I noticed that too! I reckon John did pretty well not to let that throw him off too much.

Daniel Scocco September 9, 2007 at 9:51 am

for me it gets fixed after 10 seconds.

John, what kind of traffic do you get from this appearances?

Matthew September 9, 2007 at 10:00 am

Fixed for me after a few seconds also. I am interested in knowing what kind of traffic the TV appearence brings.

Rhys September 9, 2007 at 10:32 am

I was on Welsh TV with my blog about a year ago, my traffic doubled for about a week.

Admittedly I don’t get anywhere near as many hits as this blog, but I was happy with it :)

TheDirectoryDude September 9, 2007 at 9:46 pm

What were you on TV for? Was it a fairly major program?

I’ve had similar reports from other people who have been interviewed about “the blogosphere”.

Make Money Blogging September 9, 2007 at 4:28 pm

It must of been a lot of Leo mentioned it crashed his servers… maybe similar to a Digg?

Blogs For Money September 10, 2007 at 11:47 am

Or maybe they just DoS’d him to make it look like they sent him traffic ;-D

Liberty and New Creation September 10, 2007 at 10:00 am

Yes, I’d be very interested in what kind of traffic you got as well.

SEO Optimization September 9, 2007 at 9:57 am

Oh okey, it got fixed with the second view. Now i can see it better.

Word Hugger September 10, 2007 at 12:31 pm

You could always cut out the grey part, as its before you get on.

Blogs For Money September 9, 2007 at 9:46 am

Same here :-(

MyBlogCotest September 9, 2007 at 10:13 am

It’s nice to see you on TV again. Great tips!

YC September 9, 2007 at 10:17 am

Nice tips there John – but the best tip – get on TV like that.

Tyson Williams September 9, 2007 at 10:23 am

I saw it on TV as I watch the show every night, but it help to have a copy on YouTube as well. Good points! Thanks John.

Rhys September 9, 2007 at 10:33 am

Forgive me if this comment is repeating someone else, what’s with the “Boats, Babes and Cars” headline? :P

John Chow September 9, 2007 at 10:46 am

I’m just trying different title tags.

SEO Optimization September 9, 2007 at 11:28 am

John forget about what others say … you don’t have to write about making money even if you have the title Make Money Online, i don’t know how much traffic that keyword brings you daily, but if it does, than it is a waste of time to change the title.

Apart that, the sarcastic title Boats Babes etc…it might confuse many as to what is this blog about.

Shaun September 9, 2007 at 1:21 pm

Yeah, but… that would probably translate into more comments. I mean, would you rather read about “make money online” or “boats, babes and cars”? Wait. Don’t answer that! :P

SEO Optimization September 9, 2007 at 1:51 pm

If something works just great the way it is..why change it? Wait, don’t answer that. ;)

Making The Money September 10, 2007 at 5:32 am

Chicks always get my vote, no matter how really interesting making money online is.

Blogs For Money September 9, 2007 at 11:52 am

I saw that before I wondered whether he’d changed it or I just never noticed it before. Anyway, wher are these boats and babes?!

TheDirectoryDude September 9, 2007 at 9:51 pm

Haha, amazing the things we notice and think are a big deal. On a ‘normal’ blog nobody would even a notice a change in the title tag let alone comment on it

Angel September 9, 2007 at 10:40 am

I’d never heard John’s voice before. I thought he’d sound more like Fox newscastor for some reason.

Word Hugger September 10, 2007 at 12:32 pm

Haha, I thought the same.

John Andrew September 9, 2007 at 10:43 am

Nice interview, but you don’t tell us to much in it…anyway…I’m gonna read you’re book :)

Liberty and New Creation September 10, 2007 at 10:01 am

Yep, the book is better.

Search Engine Marketing September 9, 2007 at 10:46 am

Man John,
You are the King! Great Interview and bet you did get alot of traffic from that one!
Darin

Starfeeder September 9, 2007 at 11:01 am

That interviewer was annoying, like dude shut up and let him finish!

David Savage September 9, 2007 at 11:02 am

He called John Chow dot Com small…the nerve!

Make Money Blogging September 9, 2007 at 4:37 pm

JohnChow.com is small… relative to other sites…

Jamie September 11, 2007 at 4:15 pm

But, of course, relative to our sites…

Klaudio September 9, 2007 at 11:22 am

Haha!
Very cool vid.
Is “The lab” available as an online-streaming version?

Softsled September 9, 2007 at 11:22 am

That interviewer? Have you been living under a rock for the last 10 years? You don’t know who Leo is?

Scoot September 9, 2007 at 2:05 pm

Leo is the BEST, after John I mean.

Thomas De Maesschalck September 9, 2007 at 2:26 pm

I don’t really know him either – only through John’s blog. Guess he’s only popular in North America.

Softsled September 10, 2007 at 1:13 am

Wow. That’s surprising.

Liberty and New Creation September 10, 2007 at 10:02 am

This is the first time I’ve heard of him too. I don’t watch much TV.

Blogs For Money September 10, 2007 at 11:50 am

I didn’t know who he was, and I watch a lot of TV. I guess he’s not on in every country, so it’s a bit harsh suggesting we’re all cave men :P

Jeremy Steele September 9, 2007 at 11:27 am

Not much new info, but informative nonetheless.

Neven September 9, 2007 at 11:36 am

Hi John!
hehe you still seemed a bit nervous, but the interview was just fine. I’ve been studying and learnig a lot from your experience for quite some time now, and am thinking about following in your footsteps. I’ll probably have some questions when I start my own little project, hope you’ll be interested in helping me a bit
Greetings from Croatia (you should consider taking a trip here, since you like traveling  )

Iantrepreneur September 9, 2007 at 11:44 am

wow this look like its a real tv show too! almost like a cnn special! great job john!

SEO Optimization September 9, 2007 at 1:58 pm

That IS a real TV show ;)

mcrilf September 9, 2007 at 11:52 am

cool video, thanks

The Foo September 9, 2007 at 11:58 am

nice job John, you looked a little nervous at first but looked more comfortable towards the middle and end.

Word Hugger September 9, 2007 at 11:58 am

Great video. Do you know how much traffic it sends roughly?

J September 9, 2007 at 12:15 pm

I have been a big fan of Leo for a long time. I use to watch a show called “Screen savers” back on tech tv, I think it was called. They canceled the channel and I never herd anything about the cast again. I’m amazed to find him on your site John, thank you for posting the interview and happy to see Leo still has a job and a T.V. show.

GettyCash September 9, 2007 at 12:17 pm

 Nice interview.

Sly from Slyvisions.com September 9, 2007 at 12:21 pm

That was a really nice video. I’m not familiar with the Lab though.

kimberlycun September 9, 2007 at 1:11 pm

bob September 9, 2007 at 1:14 pm

samSonic - tekniikanihmelapsi.com September 9, 2007 at 11:58 pm

John you ROCK!
This is my first comment here on http://www.johnchow.com, but I have read your sites from the year 1999. I will definitly use your ideas with my fress blog. My blog is in finnish so that narrows the traffic to finnish people only but I think your advices should work on us too

I’m also new to blogging and this blog is the first English blog I’m viewing daily or even more because there are so much to read from the archives. I also follow the links from the commentators because there are many intresting readers blogs to be discovered so keep on commenting on http://www.johnchow.com to get visitors !

squaretan September 10, 2007 at 12:43 am

Thanks John Chow! Although i am not even 1% or ever 0.1% compared to your blog, but i guess your tips are very useful. Thanks once again!

ONwebCHECK September 10, 2007 at 12:43 am

Amazing how it works! I started last month and I see a long and a hard way to go with much much much to do. Keep on blogging!

Svarog September 10, 2007 at 1:47 am

Dude, if you gonna appear on TV, talk to the camera, not to the Host.

All the show you are talking to leo, and the viewer can only see the side of your face. If you look at the camera, the viewer will see your face, and feel as though you are talking to him, making the whole show more personal.

Liberty and New Creation September 10, 2007 at 10:05 am

Um…it’s pretty customary to talk to the interviewer.

I’ve never seen anyone NOT talk to the interviewer. They only stare directly at the camera if they want to goof off or make a special point.

Making The Money September 10, 2007 at 11:27 am

John wasn’t presenting the show, he was being interviewed. When somebody asks you a question you look them in the face when you reply. That’s just manners TV or not.

Etienne Teo September 10, 2007 at 3:09 am

That is amazing i like that tip you made with driving traffic with new products review sent to others to return you back a link and generate traffic.

A Million Dollar Girl September 10, 2007 at 3:43 am

The way we are receiving a lot of traffic is due to organizing a contest as your popular evil contest lol.
Take a look and decide if you want to be part of it….we decided to use one important ammount of our marketing budget to it.
Kisses!

Gary @ Melt Your Body Fat September 10, 2007 at 4:26 am

Great interview John. The competition idea is definitely something that I can do.

Technobuzz.net September 10, 2007 at 5:10 am

nice to see you on TV again

http://www.technobuzz.net/

Richard Miller September 10, 2007 at 7:13 am

well, that was pretty much the basics you talked about.

WarriorBlog September 10, 2007 at 9:35 am

The info he gave us is nothing new, everyone know about it. Just that most don’t take action.

There are also some others one he didn’t mention. the purpose of this vid was only to get him traffic, useless video for anyone like me who been blogging over a month.

Webmaster Money September 10, 2007 at 10:03 am

Traffic is realy most important… More traffic more money. NO traffic no money… Very simple formula :)

DeboHobo September 10, 2007 at 11:20 am

Repeat traffic is even better

Israel September 10, 2007 at 10:10 am

i did not learn anything on how to build traffic from this interview. i was left wanting more.

DeboHobo September 10, 2007 at 11:21 am

It was pretty much the same o same o, but if it ain’t broke……

KiwiPulse September 10, 2007 at 10:34 am

You really know how to increase traffic. It’s amazing the final of the interview, you give the people a value thing to visit your site.
