Top Ways To Drive Traffic To Your Blog

Traffic is the foundation of making money online. Without traffic, nothing happens. What are the top ways to drive traffic to your blog? I discussed that very topic in my third interview on The Lab with Leo Laporte.

This interview was taped back in July but aired last week. It took this long to finally find the episode and put it on YouTube. Thanks to Greg Morgan for doing all the leg work to get this done. If you compare this interview to my first interview with Leo, you’ll see I’m a lot more relaxed. I must be getting use to the limelight. 😎

Enjoy the video on building traffic. I hope it helps you. Please note: the video is grayed out for the first five seconds. I don’t know why, but it clears up after that.

  1. The view is a bit screwed John, i see gray all over.

    1. Hmmm, fixed itself a few moments in 🙂

      1. Great video, but that guy Leo really likes to finish your sentences, doesn’t he! 🙁

I didn’t know you had a free ebook either! And now I see it’s at the top of every page I feel silly!

        1. I actually thing that’s part of how he does his shows. It’s not so much finishes John’s sentences as much as it is him just getting into the interview.

          1. It was just a bit annoying (and rude). I wanted to hear what John had to say and he kept butting in!! Grrrr..

          2. DeboHobo says:

Why did Leo say he didn’t know John had an Ebook, that made him look really stupid. John spoke about the book on his last show. Doh!

          3. DeboHobo says:

P.S. John you looked really great in this interview. You were definitely more confident this time around.

Do you have time to do an interview for my blog?

        2. Yeah, I noticed that too! I reckon John did pretty well not to let that throw him off too much.

    2. for me it gets fixed after 10 seconds.

John, what kind of traffic do you get from this appearances?

      1. Matthew says:

Fixed for me after a few seconds also. I am interested in knowing what kind of traffic the TV appearence brings.

      2. Rhys says:

I was on Welsh TV with my blog about a year ago, my traffic doubled for about a week.

Admittedly I don’t get anywhere near as many hits as this blog, but I was happy with it 🙂

        1. What were you on TV for? Was it a fairly major program?

I’ve had similar reports from other people who have been interviewed about “the blogosphere”.

      3. It must of been a lot of Leo mentioned it crashed his servers… maybe similar to a Digg?

        1. Or maybe they just DoS’d him to make it look like they sent him traffic ;-D

      4. Yes, I’d be very interested in what kind of traffic you got as well.

    3. Oh okey, it got fixed with the second view. Now i can see it better.

    4. Word Hugger says:

You could always cut out the grey part, as its before you get on.

  2. MyBlogCotest says:

It’s nice to see you on TV again. Great tips!

  3. YC says:

Nice tips there John – but the best tip – get on TV like that. 😈

  4. I saw it on TV as I watch the show every night, but it help to have a copy on YouTube as well. Good points! Thanks John.

  5. Rhys says:

Forgive me if this comment is repeating someone else, what’s with the “Boats, Babes and Cars” headline? 😛

    1. John Chow says:

I’m just trying different title tags.

      1. John forget about what others say … you don’t have to write about making money even if you have the title Make Money Online, i don’t know how much traffic that keyword brings you daily, but if it does, than it is a waste of time to change the title.

Apart that, the sarcastic title Boats Babes etc…it might confuse many as to what is this blog about.

        1. Shaun says:

Yeah, but… that would probably translate into more comments. I mean, would you rather read about “make money online” or “boats, babes and cars”? Wait. Don’t answer that! 😛

          1. If something works just great the way it is..why change it? Wait, don’t answer that. 😉

          2. Chicks always get my vote, no matter how really interesting making money online is.

    2. I saw that before I wondered whether he’d changed it or I just never noticed it before. Anyway, wher are these boats and babes?!

      1. Haha, amazing the things we notice and think are a big deal. On a ‘normal’ blog nobody would even a notice a change in the title tag let alone comment on it 🙂

  6. Angel says:

I’d never heard John’s voice before. I thought he’d sound more like Fox newscastor for some reason.

    1. Word Hugger says:

      Haha, I thought the same.

  7. John Andrew says:

Nice interview, but you don’t tell us to much in it…anyway…I’m gonna read you’re book 🙂

  8. Man John,
You are the King! Great Interview and bet you did get alot of traffic from that one!

  9. Starfeeder says:

That interviewer was annoying, like dude shut up and let him finish!

  10. David Savage says:

He called John Chow dot Com small…the nerve! 👿

    1. is small… relative to other sites…

      1. Jamie says:

But, of course, relative to our sites… 😉

  11. Klaudio says:

    Very cool vid.
Is “The lab” available as an online-streaming version?

  12. Softsled says:

That interviewer? Have you been living under a rock for the last 10 years? You don’t know who Leo is?

    1. Scoot says:

Leo is the BEST, after John I mean. 😯

    2. I don’t really know him either – only through John’s blog. Guess he’s only popular in North America.

      1. Softsled says:

        Wow. That’s surprising.

    3. This is the first time I’ve heard of him too. I don’t watch much TV.

    4. I didn’t know who he was, and I watch a lot of TV. I guess he’s not on in every country, so it’s a bit harsh suggesting we’re all cave men 😛

  13. Jeremy Steele says:

Not much new info, but informative nonetheless.

  14. Neven says:

    Hi John!
hehe you still seemed a bit nervous, but the interview was just fine. I’ve been studying and learnig a lot from your experience for quite some time now, and am thinking about following in your footsteps. I’ll probably have some questions when I start my own little project, hope you’ll be interested in helping me a bit 🙂
Greetings from Croatia (you should consider taking a trip here, since you like traveling 🙂 )

  15. wow this look like its a real tv show too! almost like a cnn special! great job john!

    1. That IS a real TV show 😉

  16. mcrilf says:

    cool video, thanks

  17. The Foo says:

nice job John, you looked a little nervous at first but looked more comfortable towards the middle and end.

  18. Word Hugger says:

Great video. Do you know how much traffic it sends roughly?

  19. J says:

I have been a big fan of Leo for a long time. I use to watch a show called “Screen savers” back on tech tv, I think it was called. They canceled the channel and I never herd anything about the cast again. I’m amazed to find him on your site John, thank you for posting the interview and happy to see Leo still has a job and a T.V. show.

  20. GettyCash says:

    😛 Nice interview.

  21. That was a really nice video. I’m not familiar with the Lab though.

  22. kimberlycun says:

great tips, john! thanks for sharing the video.

  23. bob says:

Good show 😯 ! I used to be a big fan of TechTV.

  24. I interviewed with Leo in 2004… he’s a great guy!

  25. Fred Peters says:

Great segment. I love Leo and you were a great addition to his show. Congratulations!!

  26. Nick says:

Did I miss the second interview somewhere along the way here? I remember watching one a while back and I thought that was the first one, now this is the third…I must be missing one somewhere here.

  27. Aibek says:

    John, you’re sou cool. 😀

  28. Dan Forrest says:

Great video John. I definitely need to work on getting more traffic… I have none! 🙂

  29. rexsky says:

  30. That is awesome, so how much traffic did that show drive in?

  31. phlizzow says:

You’re right, without traffic nothing happens.. now I really need to work on that!

    1. DeboHobo says:

  35. Joaquin says:

    Please your ebook in spanish!

  36. Angel says:

Still not seeing any babes around here.

  37. John you ROCK!
This is my first comment here on, but I have read your sites from the year 1999. I will definitly use your ideas with my fress blog. My blog is in finnish so that narrows the traffic to finnish people only but I think your advices should work on us too 😉

I’m also new to blogging and this blog is the first English blog I’m viewing daily or even more because there are so much to read from the archives. I also follow the links from the commentators because there are many intresting readers blogs to be discovered so keep on commenting on to get visitors !

  38. squaretan says:

Thanks John Chow! Although i am not even 1% or ever 0.1% compared to your blog, but i guess your tips are very useful. Thanks once again! 😀

  39. ONwebCHECK says:

Amazing how it works! I started last month and I see a long and a hard way to go with much much much to do. Keep on blogging!

  40. Svarog says:

Dude, if you gonna appear on TV, talk to the camera, not to the Host.

All the show you are talking to leo, and the viewer can only see the side of your face. If you look at the camera, the viewer will see your face, and feel as though you are talking to him, making the whole show more personal.

    1. Um…it’s pretty customary to talk to the interviewer.

I’ve never seen anyone NOT talk to the interviewer. They only stare directly at the camera if they want to goof off or make a special point.

    2. John wasn’t presenting the show, he was being interviewed. When somebody asks you a question you look them in the face when you reply. That’s just manners TV or not.

  41. Etienne Teo says:

That is amazing i like that tip you made with driving traffic with new products review sent to others to return you back a link and generate traffic.

  42. The way we are receiving a lot of traffic is due to organizing a contest as your popular evil contest lol.
Take a look and decide if you want to be part of it….we decided to use one important ammount of our marketing budget to it.

  43. Great interview John. The competition idea is definitely something that I can do.

  44. Richard Miller says:

well, that was pretty much the basics you talked about.

  45. WarriorBlog says:

The info he gave us is nothing new, everyone know about it. Just that most don’t take action.

There are also some others one he didn’t mention. the purpose of this vid was only to get him traffic, useless video for anyone like me who been blogging over a month.

  46. Traffic is realy most important… More traffic more money. NO traffic no money… Very simple formula 🙂

    1. DeboHobo says:

Repeat traffic is even better 😈

  47. Israel says:

i did not learn anything on how to build traffic from this interview. i was left wanting more.

    1. DeboHobo says:

It was pretty much the same o same o, but if it ain’t broke……

  48. KiwiPulse says:

Wow that a great interview. I enjoyed watching it 😀

  49. Thanks for the information! Just following the bread crumbs! 🙂

  50. Dan Forrest says:

Great interview! I need traffic badly… I have none! (yet)

    1. Dan Forrest says:

oops, sorry for the multiple comments saying the same thing. as you know, I had problems posting

  51. Congratulations!
You really know how to increase traffic. It’s amazing the final of the interview, you give the people a value thing to visit your site.

  52. Phoua Yang says:
