[Video] 5 Ecommerce Strategies to Sell More Online

Hi everyone. For those who don’t know me, my name is Mitchell Harper and I’m co-founder of Interspire and BigCommerce, a hosted web 2.0 ecommerce software solution with a 15 day free trial and plans from just $24.95 per month. Interspire has over 40,000 clients including NASA, MediaTemple, Yale, Virgin, etc, and was started by myself and my business partner Eddie Machaalani in 2003.

Because we sell most of our products online, we’re technically an ecommerce company who just happens to develop and sell software, and recently I’ve started recording videos to help other online retailers increase their conversion rate, understand online marketing and become better at what they do. I remember back when I started there wasn’t a heck of a lot of information online, so I had to learn a lot through trial-and-error. With our new YouTube channel, BigCommerceDotCom (make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss any videos!), I’ve decided to share the tips and strategies we’ve used to sell millions of dollars worth of products online in the last 6 years.

Having said that, of course it takes more than just a few strategies to do well if you’re an online retailer. It’s a lot of work, but hopefully these videos can lay the groundwork for you to start something great of your own. Anyway, here are the 5 most recent videos from our YouTube channel:

I hope you’ve found the videos above useful. We’re publishing at least 1-2 new videos each week and our goal is to become the #1 guru channel on YouTube for eCommerce and online retailers. We want to educate, inform and most importantly show that with a bit of work you really can get into the 6, 7 or even 8 figures a month from your online store.

If you’re looking to get started selling online you can give BigCommerce a try free for 15 days. Also, don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube guru channel. You can also read our Return on Investment blog for dozens of tips and strategies for selling online. Finally, you can follow us on Twitter.

Good information, but the presentation could be better. The faces and especially the eyes are too dark and also the camera points slightly upwards. Gives the impression the speaker is kind of “hovering” over the watcher / listener. Regarding the light, people prefer to be able to see other people’s eyes. Perhaps these guys should re-invest some of there in come in decent lightning studio equipment. Also the white balance is off. To become the number one guru channel on youtube they really have to work on their film quality. I am not into ecommerce, so I leave that to somebody else, but I do know a bit about photography 😉 SY

I agree with you that quality of the video is important and if shooting by myself would obviously take care of white balance, proper camera positioning and lighting – maybe because I also know a bit about photography? 😉
But it seems to me that plenty of blogging/marketing gurus do not care about of these aspects.
These videos seem more ad hoc then, more kind of occasional and thus more real – perhaps this is important aspect in communicating with potential users.
Also maybe they do not look as staged, do not appear as ‘TV’ programs.

  2. You have great presence on camera and your videos have some much needed information for many. I like your first video especially since most businesses do not understand that they should be on top of their ROI when purchasing any online product and make sure that they receive at least double for investing in any course. Granted they must apply to a T what the product or service teaches for their claims to be successful.

    1. I must say this guy knows what he is talking about,

    Thanks for the videos.

Why did you stop your original website. It used to have great content..

    1. Mitch says:

Mainly because it’s not easy running a company with 40 employees and trying to blog full time, but this is my way to get back into teaching because it only takes a few hours every week!

      1. The trend towards video blogging is definitely refreshing, especially for people who battle to assimilate information by reading it. The fact that it takes less of your time vs regular blogging is an extra bonus. Sounds like a win-win situation to me!

    1. Mitch says:

Hi there. No they don’t our products range from $24.95/month recurring to $3,995 once off for a perpetual license so it really depends on what they need. Hope that helps!

      1. Thats still really a big money Honey.

  12. Doug Dillard says:

Good post and good videos Mitch. Most of the information I knew already, but it was good to hear again… as we don’t sell a lot of physical products online anymore, but we are thinking of starting up again… and all the things you said are important to remember.

  13. Doug Dillard says:

Hey Mitch… I was checking out your site, which is very nice. Do you have a list of sites using your service, as I would love to see it in action?

    1. Mitch says:

Hi Doug. Here’s a few for the on-premise edition of our ecommerce software (called Interspire Shopping Cart): http://www.interspire.com/shoppingcart/livestores.php – it gets more “big name” clients because it can be downloaded and customized.

  18. Diabetis says:

I prefer ebooks since I don’t have a sound on my computer.

  19. These guys have identified their goal and sure are working towards achieving it! At the rate they’re adding content it will be a hard act for somebody else to start uploading videos and challenge them, as the sheer quantity of content they’ve generated will put them head and shoulders above the rest.

    1. Please dont think that by me commenting on their quantity of content, I am inferring that their content is not of good quality. Quite the contrary, in fact!

  20. I love your videos, best way to understand something.
Your blog is different cause is easy to read and with no long boring posts

  21. thanks for the useful information!

  22. Thanks for these videos, its always great to get free information like this to try in my own business. Who can’t use a higher sales conversion rate in this business climate. Thanks for sharing.

  23. Does this work no matter what we are selling?

  24. Hey Mitchell,

These vids are really worth noting and informative too. I haven’t read any ebook on this like everyone here does, so these are core novel concepts for me. Thanks for introducing them.

  25. cheapdanny says:

Thanks for the video tutorial. A great follow-up of useful techniques.

  26. Great video presentation,
I liked the fact that though I knew most of stuff, it’s great to get such a terrific reaffirmation & I really appreciate the way you have caught & explained certain details.

  27. Money-Era says:

I really think that video tutorials have a bright future. Quite often, after working for hours in front of the monitor and reading tons of text, I like to have a break watching an educational video. If it is shot rightly, I learn a lot while sitting comfortably. I think in future the video would become very popular channel of communication.
