Want Traffic? Think Negative.

Ok, can everyone sit down and stop moo-ing us please? We’re here to give you folks some bovine advice, which will hopefully shed a different light on your ideas of making money online. If not, heck, we still got to post on John Chow’s blog! 
A popular, well known and pretty smart way to make money online is to stay on top of off-line trends and make sure you grab a particular domain name the nano-second Steve Jobs announces something big like the iPhone. 4000 iphone related domains have been snatched up as we write this and it’s expected to grow to a total of 8000 at the end of the year. Pretty crazy huh? Now you will find that most of those domains will be related to iPhone services, goodies and more fun stuff. That’s a dense market to penetrate if you’re looking to get high up in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages). This is where negative thinking comes into play.
Remember when you as an early adapter forked out over $600 for that 8GB iPhone? When you took her smooth and shiny body out of the box it was love at first sight, she couldn’t do anything wrong, not a bad word was to be said about her.
Fast forward 3 days later. You find out that she’s really a blonde and doesn’t know what MMS is. She’s cute but has problems getting to know your AT&T provider. What do you do? If you’re anything like the stereotypical internet user, you fire up your favorite browser and Google your way through topics related to the issues you’re having with your new blond girlfriend.
This screenshot shows July’s search keyphrases from iPhoneFlaws.com, a site solely meant to cover the problems Steve’s new toy has. As you can see there’s plenty of people that found out their new gadget wasn’t all that after all. The site is not even 3 weeks old and has had no advertising done. Imagine what could be achieved with a little work on the blog! Here’s where you come in to turn people’s negative thinking into your positive bank account!
Obviously the iPhone is just an example and there’s loads of stuff that people have problems with. If you take a smart approach and let all the others fight for the best spot on Google, try to think different and become the best for the worst on Google.

John Cow a great post as always and I have to agree this is a unique way of looking at things. After all most people associate success with positive things not negative ones. Another coup of your part.

i’m just surprised how people are actually jumping on the iphone domain name bandwagon
i tried to register one, but all of the good ones are gone, even some crap ones are gone too
i think that’s why some can make some serious money while us lot are too slow to achieve that

Reply to this commentI was one of the ones who grabbed several good ones the day they announced the new gadget.
I did keyword research on the iPod and just substituted iPod for iPhone and then checked my list of keywords for domain availability.
Most of my domains are about iPhone Accessories and iPhone Docking Stations.
So far… there are no “iPhone Docking Stations” that I know of but I’m willing to bet it’s only a matter of time. (Let me know if you want to make an offer)

Reply to this commentI can attest that John Chow is NOT the same person as John Cow. Granted there may be some resemblance but I think that is more like the resemblance between two REALLY distant cousins than two brothers.. or twins!

Reply to this commentBuying a domain with iphone in it is a surefire way to get sued and get your domain taken away from you because of trademark issues.
This used to be perfectly legal a long time ago, not anymore. The companies actually have rights now and can come after your domain.

Reply to this commentI guess we’ll read soon enough if Apple is sueing those 8000 people. Surely they must have a good reason to demand a domain. We remember a certain arrogance from Steve when he introduced the iPhone while Cisco had the name patented.

Reply to this commentIf (any) companies don’t want people using domains that include their company or product’s name they should have bought it themselves first. They did know their own name before anyone else.
If it’s not legal then the domain companies should be the ones sued for selling them wouldn’t you think?

Reply to this commentI am not sure if i really understood this article. Whats about thinking negative in making a blog or site that “solves” problems actually? If you just think about it, every blog that is more oriented to a certain niche would be thinking wrong, since they all give solve issues or at least give solutions on how to do it by yourself.
What am I missing? I might be just tired and can’t think straight, i will re-read the post once again tomorrow.
Reply to this commentHe means that when a new technology comes out, there are bound to be problems, so if you think ahead and think of what those problems may be, you can snag a site and be ready for people to look for you after the technology is released. Now you have a bunch of new visitors and no real expenditures for marketing!

That’s what thinking negative means. Not focusing on what’s good about the product, but focusing on it’s flaws.

Reply to this commentSome of the terms mentioned were pretty intense like word ones. Most likely quite difficult to rank for especially if you are just starting out. I’d target some longer phrased ones and see what happens. Iphone domains are all snatched up though I’m pretty sure as others have eluded to; best to wait until the next rush.
