Webmaster Talk Loves Jon Chow

written by John Chow on November 12, 2006

How one lazy bum made $176,697.50

A couple of readers have alerted me to some site targeted Google ads that has been appearing on my blog. The ads are from Webmaster Talk and is showing to US readers only – which explains why I haven’t seen them. For anyone who haven’t seen the ads yet, here they are.

While I am flattered that Webmaster Talk likes my blog so much that they created ads just for it, I would like them more if they spell my name right!

What’s the internet coming to??? People will do anything for traffic in our days!!!

Eli Burford November 12, 2006 at 6:43 pm

I was wondering if you knew about the typo in the title when I saw it in my thunderbird :)
hehe

Ha! There are some crazy ads emerging these days.

You’re right though John, the LEAST they could do is spell your name correctly! (Idle speculation – the mispelling wouldn’t have been for legal safety would it?)

John Chow November 12, 2006 at 6:49 pm

I doubt the misspelling was for legal reasons. Maybe the name “Jon” was just stuck in his mind when Tim wrote those ads.

Derrich November 12, 2006 at 7:47 pm

Don’t talk to me about misspelling names, buddy!!!

Jon Waraas November 12, 2006 at 8:04 pm

I took those screenshots! yay!

Tim Schroeder November 12, 2006 at 8:07 pm

Ok, i’ll admit the typo was very “uncool” like. :)

John Chow is right that I simply had “Jon” stuck in my mind when writing the ads. I visit this blog everyday and saw John over and over again but I was blind to the typo. Duh.

I recently discovered your blog and do enjoy it so I figured I would write a somewhat humorous ads showing how I appreciate your blog and at the same time advertising my forums. It was more of a fun experiment.

There are actually things that can be learned from this (i.e writing creative ads) besides proofreading your ads.

Anyway, keep up the good work “John.” :)

Justin November 12, 2006 at 8:22 pm

I took a screnshot of one of them.

Tim,
I made a post in your forum about John, its in your General Discussions section…

John Chow rocks my socks! ;)

Jon Waraas November 12, 2006 at 8:23 pm

How does the ad do?

Tim Schroeder November 12, 2006 at 8:35 pm

Justin, I found your post and replied.

In regards to your question Jon, it would be a good subject for John Chow to blog about. :)

John Chow November 12, 2006 at 8:46 pm

I would imagine the ad worked very well. My readers noticed it enough to tell me about it and I like it enough to make a blog post about it, thereby increasing Webmaster Talk’s exposure.

Pretty good viral marketing if you ask me. I’m glad to hear you corrected my name. :)

Tim Schroeder November 12, 2006 at 8:53 pm

Thanks for the post John. And I’m glad I found your blog.

Nomar November 12, 2006 at 11:33 pm

cool work from W-T

your blog has definatly made it to the top

Abhishek Goyal November 13, 2006 at 4:48 am

This probably because of the maximum length allowed in title in google ads.

Paul November 13, 2006 at 5:31 am

Hey John, looks like he fixed the spelling and made them display in Canada.

Heres a shot:

I wonder what Andy Warhol would have to say about this.

Vincent Chow November 13, 2006 at 9:58 am

I saw that ads too in Malaysia. Seems like it’s not only for US anymore.

matt November 13, 2006 at 10:04 am

The typo has now been fixed! I am viewing your blog from USA and your most recent post about full rss has a the “really cool” ad with proper spelling.

ralphieb November 13, 2006 at 5:21 pm

Here’s another one, saw it on this blog.
