What to Do When Facebook Doesn’t Display Your Post Image

Even though a lot has changed in terms of getting organic reach without having to pay for it, we can all agree that Facebook is still a very valuable marketing channel and it’s still a great way to connect with your blog’s audience. Of course, not everything works exactly as it should all the time and Facebook is certainly not immune to its own share of problems.

Where’s My Blog Post Image?

There are many different tools you can use to syndicate your blog on Facebook. Jetpack is one of the easiest ways to do it, but you’ve got plenty of options here. They generally work well and they’ll automatically share your new blog posts on your Facebook page… except when there’s a problem.

Sometimes, for some inexplicable reason or another, the title and snippet for your blog post may appear as they should, but the post image could be missing. The post image is usually pulled by Facebook from your blog as either the first image in the post or as the image you have selected as the “featured image” for the post.

While this is strange, it’s actually very easy to fix.

Quick Steps to an Easy Solution

The first thing that you’ll need to do is to go to your Facebook page. From there, scroll down your feed until you get to the post with the missing attachment.

facebook-post

I’m using a screenshot from the Beyond the Rhetoric Facebook page here as an example and, thankfully, none of the more recent posts are missing the post thumbnail. The actual steps taken are still exactly the same, so let’s keep moving along.

If you look at the screenshot above, you’ll notice that every post has a time stamp. It’ll either show how long ago the post was published (e.g., “7 hours ago”) or it’ll show the actual time and date (e.g., “10 January at 10:29”). This is a clickable link.

Click it and you’ll be sent to the actual specific URL where that post lives on Facebook. The structure of the URL should be similar to:

https://www.facebook.com/beyondtherhetoric/posts/10153733383146648

That is where our current example is located.

Once you are on the page with the specific update where the post image is missing, click on the small downward-pointing arrow in the top-right corner of the post. This will bring up a contextual menu with a few options, the third of which is “Refresh share attachment,” as highlighted here.

Click on that.

A lightbox window will then appear with a refreshed attachment. This refreshes not only the post image, which is what we’re usually trying to fix, but also the post title and the post excerpt. If you see the correct image here for your content, click on the blue “save” button on the bottom right.

If this doesn’t fix your problem, there’s likely a different issue with your blog that you’ll need to address separately.

Leverage Facebook to Your Advantage

If you are using Facebook to promote your blog and drive readers to your site, make sure you take advantage of all the opportunities that are made available to you. Otherwise, you could be giving up your readership and leaving some serious money on the table.

And if your shared posts don’t have an image attached them, they are far more likely to be ignored by your fans, followers and readers. Every post should have at least one relevant image and this needs to be included when you share that content on Facebook.
