Why You Should Have Your Own Product

Most bloggers stick to advertising or promoting affiliate products on their blogs as the primary income source. However, the real money is made by selling your own product. There are many reasons for that.

It’s The Most Profitable

Of all the methods there are to making money by blogging, by far the most profitable is by selling your own product. Having your own product means there’s no wholesale or middle-man markup. You get to keep all the money. I have done very well promoting other people’s products but I’ve made the most by selling products that I control or have an interest in.

You Have Total Control

When you sell your own product, you have total control over it and its quality. You don’t have to worry about whether the company you’re promoting will deliver to your readers or whether they will even pay you.

This level of control will give you great peace of mind. You know that you’re delivering a quality product to your readers instead of some affiliate product that you may have not tried yourself.

It’s Easier To Sell Your Own Product

From my experience, it’s far easier to sell your own product than it is to market someone else’s. If you’ve build up a good relationship with your readers, they will trust you and will be receptive to any offer you send them. However, they will be far more receptive if the offer is one of your own product.

Your readers know you and know the quality of work you put out. If something has your name on it, they’ll be much more likely to buy it than if it’s just a product that you recommend. This makes the product much easier to sell. In fact, chances are you just need to present it instead of trying to do clever sales job.

Before launching Blog Profit Camp, I pre-sold over a dozen copies even before writing any of the content in the sales copies. Word got out that I was launching a new product and some readers wanted it even before I started working on it.

It Will Increase Your Brand Name

Being able to show your own product is great brand building tool. My first product was an eBook and it help to separate me from all the other bloggers out there. Then I wrote a real book that you can buy at book stores or Amazon.com which really helped elevate my brand.

When you have something that the blogger next door doesn’t have, it gives you a leg up and makes you unique in a very crowded field. The increased brand name has its own rewards. Not only are you more well known but there’s also income to be made from speaking engagement.

Since publishing my book, Make Money Online: Roadmap of a Dot Com Mogul, I’ve received many invitations to speak at various conferences and trade shows. Not only does this increase my brand even more but it also means my conference trips are fully paid for!

What separates you from the other 120 million blogs in the blogosphere? Most bloggers can’t answer this question. Well, the easiest way to separate yourself is by having your own product.

There can be no doubt that having your own product is a great way to grow your business. As an affiliate, you should simply watch your market and see how you can help people — the product will come naturally from that and compliment your affiliate business.

    Thanks for the post.

That’s what I also think, but you need to have a GOOD product.

      1. d3so says:

I agree. not only do you need a good product, you also need to market it.
I’ve seen good products go unnoticed due to poor marketing.

        1. PPC Ian says:

That is a very good point. That’s why it’s very important to first build up a following before launching a product. Then, it’s much easier to market to your existing blog readers and email list!

          1. Mantra of marketing in blog world … whenever you launched any product just bought review from top bloggers as well.

            You will get instant recognition.

          2. That’s one good advice @ZK. And this is why you gonna have a good product since most of them are making an honest review.

      2. Abhik says:

        I agree.
A product that make others interested.
But again, you have to have your own infrastructure to promote that.

    2. Agreed. And with the right tools, a blog is easy to create and maintain. It’s nice having some control with your own product.

      1. If your product can become from luxury to necessity than you are ready to enjoy the real fruit.

    3. Who are the hardest working and most underpaid people online?

      Bloggers!

Typical bloggers that are relying on adsense and a few ads are working very hard for little money.

Of course there are exceptions and they are the ones employing other forms of monetization like list building and product creation.

I know bloggers that have been working hard for years and don’t make more than a few hundred per month. On the flip side, I was able to make 7 figures in 3 weeks with my first info product. Good post John!

      1. If they are working hard and they are not making money than I must say that they do not know how to monetise.

If you are a blogger and after gaining good knowledge you are still stick to your one blog or did not launch any product than you should think about everything from the scratch.

Having your very own product gives you a huge advantage to convert more sales. This is what I was lacking for months of internet marketing and I realize that having my own products will definitely give me a real “go” signal to make a real difference. Right now I’m planning for my own product, even if its pretty simple. 🙂

      What is it about ?

      1. Concensus would have it that the “best time” to create a product and sell it is when you have about 1K subscribers (I assume that’s “email subscriptions”). But do you really have to wait for those 1K Subscriber to come?

        1. d3so says:

Not really, you just need quality traffic and a loyal readership.
Or you can do JVs with high profile people.

      2. Jeff Caceres says:

Secret……Hehehe. I’m still studying and planning on it in order to satisfy my customers. 🙂

        1. Just look around and you will be able to see how big bloggers are selling their products.

If John Chow launched a product whole blog world start talking about it, big players add this on their blogs.

So similarly you can also do that. Create a product and make a lost to get review from various top bloggers on this.

  3. Alex Dumitru says:

I am planning to release my own product, though it will take a lot, because I want to be something really powerful 🙂

    1. d3so says:

I think it’s best to release your first product with a partner.
I’m currently looking for a partner to create a product with.

      1. And on what kind of product you are working or will start working ?

  4. As a long time affiliate, I imagine myself on the other side of the equation. Wow. I imagine having a bunch of affiliates taking all the risk and I am making all the money!

    1. Abhik says:

Guess what!! I also hope to get there someday.
Believe it or not, it sounds easier than achieving it.

  5. It is vitally important to create a unique product, either a membership or an ebook.

    Greetings John!

    1. d3so says:

I ran a membership forum before. I made some good money off it.

      1. What was the theme of your forum ?

Why you stopped that one if you were earning good money ?

  6. Devin Elder says:

    Great post, thanks John.

I think if you’re just starting out, promoting affiliate products is a great way to gauge a market and learn how to sell online. Once you acquire the skill set to make money online, branching out to your own product is a great idea.

What do I know – I don’t have my own product yet! But, it seems like it would be overwhelming for a newbie to attempt product creation and sales all in one go.

    1. d3so says:

You can take some time everyday to write an ebook to get started.

      1. Yes if you are good in writing than have a taste of success with ebook.

        1. Bayseec says:

Ya, especially with show more pictures.

  7. Brand and Profits are the most obvious benefits of product creation. All in all, creating a product will improve “you” as a blogger. Aside from the door of opportunities that will open for you, it will also create more venues of building relationships with new friends. If you have true passion on what you are doing, you probably put “building relationships” on top of profits and brand in your Value List.

  8. Well said John. Especially if you create a top selling Clickbank digital product and have 1000’s of affiliates like myself promoting the heck out of it for you. That is a recipe for a whole hellava lot of money. And like you said it also increases your brand name. Plus you will become more well known like yourself and more people will buy from you in the future.

    1. Dan Lew says:

You hit the nail on the head 🙂

      1. Yes if you reach at that level than everything will be easy because from top you can see which path is going where …

  9. There’s another advantage that never gets mentioned – creating a product can deliver massive emotional benefit.

The enjoyment and satisfaction of creating it are one thing, the extra profit brought by the confidence and passion that creating a product can deliver is another.

    1. Some time such emotions can be dangerous and can block your growth as well.

Because you started to treat those products your baby even if they are not making money they are close to your heart.

  10. There is no doubt that one of the best ways to both make the money money and have total control is to have your own product..

I have been meaning to put together my own for long time, but have never been able to finish the project. Would be nice to maybe have a course over what the different types of products that could be put together and how to advertise them. I know that’s kind of a general idea, but maybe it’s someone’s project.

  11. Benjamin says:

Excellent post John! We put most of your advice to work and I must say atleast 80% of your advice works!

  12. d3so says:

It takes a great deal of knowledge and credibility to launch a successful product.

  13. Good article .I really agree with your third point,it is so easy to sell our own products.

    Regards|Madav

  14. Your own product can provide you passive income …

If you able to create such product which can be the necessity of people than you will be at winning position.

  15. fas says:

But creating a good product is all that matters.

    1. With that killing marketing as well.

      Both should have perfect combination.

Do not want to get into the debate of product or marketing.

  16. Fabian H. says:

Hi I understand this point is better to have your own product to earn a few coins with advertising or affiliate, but as a start?

    Thanks for the tips.

  17. roddy says:

I don’t have much success with affiliate products and do think there must be a better way unless you have an absolute killer generic domain name

  18. Twem says:

Very good an informative post John.
I’m hoping to launch a couple of products of my own once I’m a little more established.
I don’t have much luck at affiliate marketing at the moment, but I’m still learning.

  19. Abhik says:

I do understand that having a own brand helps to earn a lot of money.
But promoting your own product may not help if you don’t get help of other marketers.

  20. Abhik says:

To add it to my previous comment,
A product sales more when you have affiliate system of your own.
Or, may be you can promote using other networks like clickbank.

  21. Marc says:

I currently have developed two ebooks of my own, one on generating cashflow, and the other on improving your personal budgeting skills in order to become debt free.
Sold quite a few copies which is pleasing, but could do with many more. Thanks for the inspiration to continue.

  22. Lakhyajyoti says:

Every point you have mentioned here is excellent. But we must have a good product.

  23. Essays says:

Branding is the key for business growth. You must promote your brand not product. When he or she is satisfied, they will come back for the same brand. You only need to invest money in advertising once.

  24. When we are making our own product, lots of other thing we need to consider. Most of the time we will need to face with customer service and so on. So it is time consuming. But if the sales is much more than the time that we need to spend for customer service that would be good.
Well, we can also create product without support but not many will buy it.

  25. Drew Griffin says:

I think you are your brand. I agree that you must create products that you own and sell. Keeping your readers and clients’ best interest in mind by creating products to serve them and provide value will be transparent. Thanks John

  26. Alex Campain says:

I think you are your brand that make sense you are the product thanks for the information

  27. Alex Campain says:
