WordPress has finally released version 2.9 of the world’s greatest blogging platform. Known as “Carmen,” the new release is named in honor of magical jazz vocalist Carmen McRae. WordPress 2.9 offers a huge array of upgrades and improvements over the previous WordPress 2.8.X. You can upgrade easily from your Dashboard by going to Tools > Upgrade, or you can download from WordPress.org.

If you’re still running WordPress 2.8, you should think about upgrading to 2.9 as it has many cool new features. However, if you follow WordPress history, you could also wait a week or two for the inevitable 2.9.1 release. The coolest new stuff from a user point of view inclue:

  • Global undo/”trash” feature, which means that if you accidentally delete a post or comment you can bring it back from the grave (i.e., the Trash). This also eliminates those annoying “are you sure” messages we used to have on every delete.
  • Built-in image editor allows you to crop, edit, rotate, flip, and scale your images to show them who’s boss. This is the first wave of our many planned media-handling improvements.
  • Batch plugin update and compatibility checking, which means you can update 10 plugins at once, versus having to do multiple clicks for each one, and we’re using the new compatibility data from the plugins directory to give you a better idea of whether your plugins are compatible with new releases of WordPress. This should take the fear and hassle out of upgrading.
  • Easier video embeds that allow you to just paste a URL on its own line and have it magically turn it into the proper embed code, with Oembed support for YouTube, Daily Motion, Blip.tv, Flickr, Hulu, Viddler, Qik, Revision3, Scribd, Google Video, Photobucket, PollDaddy, and WordPress.tv (and more in the next release).

I know this post is getting old , Just thought i'd mention that I recommend updating to 2.9.1 .

2.9 is fast as well. I like new feature of upgrade plug just with a single click. Now, we don't have to upgrade each plugin separately, just select all upgrades available and upgrade them automatically in an instant.

And the WordPress jnuggernaut just keeps rolling on. It recently got voted as best open source CMS, which is a good indication of how diverse the WordPress platform has become. Open Source, and WordPress ROCKS!

It's coooool :) Wow
nice job John.

This definitely is a must install for every WordPress blog – of course as any other upgrade from Automatic.

I think I spotted a bug. When you go edit a file and then choose another one than the default file – try that, do you have any troubles there?

But well I think that the trash thing is so awesome – I have once tried to delete a comment that shouldn’t have been deleted, you just feel bad afterwards..

I have yet to try the video embed. But the image editor is just so LOVELY!

Are you running your website on Wordpress? If so, do you encounter any problems with non-ASCII characters? I ask because I run a blog on tech stuff, including blogging software.

Also, are you trying to edit files in the Wordpress admin section?

Yeah the more I read about

Aweber, the more I like it. We just relaunched our blog and

kora flash will be implemented in the next phase.

@Yoseph, No, you don't need to re-install your plugins. WordPress keeps your plugins running.

But you should always make a backup before upgrading.

Moving to the latest version is a good idea because the bad guys are hitting WordPress really hard these days installing hidden admin users to access your blog without you knowing it:

Wordpress is still my favorite

I'm on this 2.9. Wodpress is so easy. I tried Joomla once... OMG!!! It was a nightmare... So going from Joomla to Wordpress was like going from Triganometry to addition and subtraction.

I was thinking about to upgrading my 2.8.6
But 2.8.6 is enough for me.
When i change version to 2.9, do i have to install the previous installed plugin again?

I am looking forward to try, has anyone ever tried wp cloaker??i think its good for IM elsewhere to get mainstea income.cheers

Sounds pretty sweet looking will wait for the first .1 or .2 release just not always the best idea to be first. I do like the improvements to images.

Anyone using Drupal that can comment on it's blogging capabilities, compared to WordPress? Thinking of migrating over to WP 2.9 from Drupal.

Nice to hear that, great new features are out. Thanks for the notice.

Cheers

Just updated it, thanks John.

Updated two blogs so far, only with one I run into a comparability issue with a plugin (tinymce), lets see how it goes over the next weeks, hopefully all plugin developers are checking now their plugins for issues with the new WP2.9, SY

I have to do this soon. Glad to hear that there haven't been too many bugs. The one I read above about the site map generator was a bummer since I use that one. I'm sure it will be fixed soon.

I really like
wordpress because it is a powerful blogging tool and easy to use. I run Xavier online bookstore from wordpress.com. Although it is not a shopping cart software, it works well. I can sell a lot of books by only using that blog.

i've already upgraded to 2.9, i think its faster too, nice capabilty to use 10 plugins.. thats good

Smokin hot - looking forward to taking it for a spin

Don't know what to say. Looks to cool to wait!

I just knew there was a reply the latest wordpress, there must be direct to download the latest version

You should just be able to update it from your wordpress interface automagically.

Inside your admin page, at the top, it will tell you there is an upgrade. Click on it, and then click upgrade automatically. You don't have to do anything yourself. :)

Updated my blog this morning with no problems at all. Can't say I wasn't a little bit hesitant though. It wouldn't be the first time and upgrade went wrong.

Upgraded all my blogs today

Looks great and it is working very well also.

Not sure why so many of you here fear the worst in upgrading and will wait until 2.9.1. I've upgraded to every new version as soon as they come out and have never ran into any sort of problem.

While the rest of you wait for v2.9.1, I'll wait for v2.9.3. I've been down this road too many times before, and know that when these guys fix something, they manage to break 2 other things. :)

Finally, the hottest product in blogosphere is out but base on wordpress story, i will wait to implement it in my blog.

I would suggest you to wait for a while ... they will get many feedback and reports if there will be any flaw and according to that they will issue new version of wordpress.

Another wordpress in the right direction, this has some very good features. Google are you listening? Time to update blogger.

I really wish there was more time in the world. I need an extra hour to do little things like this!!

PS... it's 3am here in Calgary and I still haven't slept yet. I may be a bit of a vampire but this is pushing it for me.

wow... wordpress team doing a great job... nice for wordpress user . upgrade now !

They always do great job and they are keep doing it.

Nice to see that new version is coming.

Would love to see what Mr Cutts have opinion about this.

Surprisingly, this gave me no errors at all.

i'm definitely going to wait a couple weeks i have had to much drama in the past when updating wordpress too early before the bugs are worked out

Another wordpress update.. Good and many new feature,,

This new version is cool, I updated and I checked all the new features but there is some compatibility problems with some plugins like the famous Google XML sitemaps.. It gives an syntax error, when you want to publish or update a post you get that error message, because after updating or publishing, the plugin is called to rebuild the sitemap automatically.. I disabled the plugin and things got back to normal..

@Zak Show : You should backup before upgrade

This should be fixed in 2.9.1 ...

See http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/11499 and http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=49531

Many people are seeing this come and go due to a timing issue -- lots of plugins are being blamed, but it's core code that needs to be fixed.

Thanks for sharing John - just updated. Very important that everyone remembers to update right-away!!

Looks good! Can't wait to get it!

I'll just wait for the inevitable release of 2.9.1 in about a week.

We're on the same wavelength there, Jerky Boy!

is there a migration tool to help transfer my blogspot content to wordpress?

Yes, just Google "Blogger to WordPress transfer." Lots of sites outline how to do it.
