I just updated to the newest version of WordPress. This new 2.0 release has quite a few improvements over the 1.5.2 I was using. A software upgrade is always a nerve racking thing to do since there’s always the chance that something could go wrong and you’ll lose your site. For many people, the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” motto applies. However, with open source software, one should always upgrade to the latest version for security purposes.
The upgrade went very smooth and without drama. Most of the improvements were done in the backend admin area. There is a new color scheme in the control panel and the theme panel shows previews of all available themes installs. Also I can upload images right from the write post screen.
Overall, I like the upgrades WordPress has made to their blog software and I recommend anyone using an older version of WordPress to upgrade to this new version.

One of the most common complaint (or excuse) I hear from potential new bloggers is they don’t know how to install WordPress. Terms like FTP and CPanel are like a foreign language and setting up a database might as well be setting up the space shuttle for a launch. Because of the technology barrier, many would-be bloggers never start their blogs...

“with open source software” or closed software you should upgrade if there’s a security concern; you imply that open source software is intrinsicaly less secure and that’s not the case. cheers.
