There is an relativ easy and foolproof way of upgrading with virtually no downtime and instant revert option.

Just copy the “old” database into a second database and then run the upgrade against that database. If your blog is in a sub folder just upload all the new files to a second folder. Add the wp-content folder and the other files. Rename the old folder to old and the new one to your normal blog folder name and run the upgrade script. Done. It failed? Rename folders and your back in business instantly.

Does it screw up your theme when you upgrade? Ie do you need to reactivate all your plugins?
