Wordpress 2.2 Available For Download

written by John Chow on May 15th, 2007

For those of you who never read what is on your Wordpress Dashboard, here’s a little heads up. Wordpress 2.2 is available for download. This version includes a number of new features, most notably Widgets integration, and over two hundred bug fixes. Some of the new goodies includes.

  • WordPress Widgets allow you to easily rearrange and customize areas of your weblog (usually sidebars) with drag-and-drop simplicity. This functionality was originally available as a plugin Widgets are now included by default in the core code, significantly cleaned up, and enabled for the default themes.
  • Full Atom support, including updating our Atom feeds to use the 1.0 standard spec and including an implementation of the Atom Publishing API to complement our XML-RPC interface.
  • A new Blogger importer that is able to handle the latest version of Google’s Blogger product and seamlessly import posts and comments without any user interaction beyond entering your login.
  • Infinite comment stream, meaning that on your Edit Comments page when you delete or spam a comment using the AJAX links under each comment it will bring in another comment in the background so you always have 20 items on the page. (I know it sounds geeky, but try it!)
  • We now protect you from activating a plugin or editing a file that will break your blog.
  • Core plugin and filter speed optimizations should make everything feel a bit more snappy and lighter on your server.
  • We’ve added a hook for WYSIWYG support in a future version of Safari.

In addition there were also dozens of UI and accessibility improvements, ranging from more concise wording around options and links to things like a view and preview link above the content box when you’re editing a post or page.

I just upgraded the blog to 2.2 and so far it looks pretty good! All my Plugins appears to be working. That’s always a good sign. I’m not sure I like the new preview system however.

*Update - I see one bug so far. My side bar widget seem to have messed up. It’s showing two Feature Sites box and my Top Commentators and MyBlogLog box has gone missing. Anyone else have this problem?

*Update 2 - OK. I managed to downgrade back to the Wordpress 2.1.3. I’ll wait untill they fix the sidebar widget problem before upgrading again.

Hello John, I’m a relatively new blogger so I was wondering if I upgrade will any of my adjustments to my design layout be affected? Especially sidebar information that’s already on widgets because of certain plugins. Will the new widgets override them? Hope you can help!

Personally, I would wait for some feedback. Check out the official wordpress forum. I think they could tell you better than most of us :).

The new preview feature is terrible. It opens up in a new tab which is annoying and takes longer. I find the more “upgrades” Wordpress makes the less I like it. The upload feature was fine before then they changed it and now it takes more steps to uplaod an image and the images no longer work with my lighbox plugin.

I usually don’t upgrade so fast but since I didn’t upgrade to the last version they released a few weeks ago I figured I had better do it now just to be on the safe side.

For all web applications or computer programs, before upgrading review release log. Bug fixes and incompetibility issues. Then draw a strategy for upgrade, backup your application then upgrade it to latest revision. Don’t forget to implement&change any previous customizations that you apply.

I’m using DNN as cms. And it has similar features like Wordpress, and the strategy above always worked for me.

I could share my experiences with writing an article here, if John and visitors want.

Just let me know:)

John, you are definitely a brave one. But, it sounds like downgrading was fairly painless.

Yeah, apparently the ExecPHP widget doesn’t work with this version-no matter how many PHP widgets you have, only the first one shows properly.

I usually wait for 2.x.1 ;-)

I usually wait for the 2.x.1 or 2.x.2 as well.

Too many widgets might not work with all the fixes/additions/changes put in the core of the platform.

See? WordPress bugs have to be ironed out, and upgrade-downgrade dance is not so easy.

John, thanks for testing it and letting us know your experience. That helps us to stay out of troubled waters ;)

I’ve had no problems at all with Top commentators and MyBlogLog Widget.

After installation I noticed that there was already a “widget” link under presentation, so there is no need to activate the Sidebar Widgets plugin.

Some of the widgets are not placed in the sidebar right away, since they are activated later, so all you have to do is drag them from the bottom back to where you want them to appear and it works fine.

As far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing wrong with the upgrade.

I’m glad I didn’t update my blog as soon as I read this. I was wondering how my blog would know to use the built-in WordPress widgets instead of the widgets plug-in that I currently have installed. Sounds like there is a bug though, so I’ll wait for the fix.

There was a flaw in the ExecPHP plugin that has been patched. Information is available at:

http://www.rodtempleton.net/2007/05/16/wordpress-22-widget-flaw-resolved/

Now all of the PHP widgets display properly.

Does it screw up your theme when you upgrade? Ie do you need to reactivate all your plugins?

Do you wait for new release for plug-ins or new release for wordpress itself?

There is an relativ easy and foolproof way of upgrading with virtually no downtime and instant revert option.

Just copy the “old” database into a second database and then run the upgrade against that database. If your blog is in a sub folder just upload all the new files to a second folder. Add the wp-content folder and the other files. Rename the old folder to old and the new one to your normal blog folder name and run the upgrade script. Done. It failed? Rename folders and your back in business instantly.

The exact stept are available here.
