WordPress 2.8 Available for Download

WordPress has just released a brand new version of the world’s best blogging software. Version 2.8 “Baker,” is immediately available for download. 2.8 represents a nice fit and finish release for WordPress with improvements to themes, widgets, taxonomies, and overall speed. We also fixed over 790 bugs. This release is named in honor of noted trumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker.

Visually, 2.8 feels a lot like 2.7, just with some minor tweaks here and there. However once you’ll dig in you’ll begin to appreciate the changes. 2.8 is also way faster to use. You can read the full list of over 180 upgrades here.

The upgrade to 2.8 went without a single hitch and everything looks to be running normally so far. It really does seem faster than the last version. So far, I am happy with it. If WordPress follows its usual pattern, I’m sure 2.8.1 won’t be far behind. Here’s a quick video overview of everything in the new release:

code highlighting and theme browser are the big difference that I love most, not to mention the speed working on the widgets panel. 🙂

      1. The widgets panel is much more organized. I like that we can easily add widgets to different sidebars now by simply dragging/dropping.

  3. It’s going to be nice to get those bugs that were in WordPress 2.7 out of there. I also like how they’re allowing easier access to the theme galleries.

    1. I never understand why some people don’t upgrade. There are quite a lot of bugs that were in 2.7 that are now fixed.

      1. Cam Birch says:

The reason people don’t upgrade is the hassle of downgrading or trying to fix the plugins that don’t work anymore. OSS has a nasty habit of not quite maintaining backwards compatibility.

        1. Yeah, but I’ve seen people say this even when the upgrade includes major bug/security hole fixes. It makes me wonder how much they value their blogs.

          1. Cam Birch says:

I value my blog, and I have upgraded an now downgraded because the new version doesn’t work on my server. Either I have a plugin that is completely messed up or my server doesn’t support one of the new features of 2.8, or a feature of 2.8 is to be broken. I don’t know, what I do know is that I’ll be waiting for my plugins to update and more time to be able to fool around with this upgrade.

I just upgraded to WP 2.8. I had to manually upload the thing via FTP since the automatic upgrade failed (got stuck) on me.

Have yet to explore the upgrades made to it though. Will be reading the list of changes from 2.7.1 to 2.8 shortly.

  20. Upgraded without any problems… I’m liking the new version. The theme viewer is sick!

  21. I upgraded as soon as I saw it in the dashboard [gotta love the Automatic Upgrade plugin.]

It definitely is faster, but my other favorite things about it are the syntax highlighting [that was LONG overdue] & the changes in the widget section.

  23. One thing they still haven’t fixed is the image caption problem. Captions don’t work well with specific themes and need to be specifically tweaked in the CSS file. They need to make captions work universally with all themes.

I think they’ve managed to mess up the flash image uploader also. When I upload an image, it asks you for your username and password.
