WordPress 3.1.2 Available for Download

It hasn’t come across the WordPress dashboard yet but WordPress version 3.1.2 is now available to download. This is a security release and all WordPress users are advised to upgrade to this newest version right away. From the WordPress blog:

WordPress 3.1.2 is now available and is a security release for all previous WordPress versions.

This release addresses a vulnerability that allowed Contributor-level users to improperly publish posts.

The issue was discovered by a member of our security team, WordPress developer Andrew Nacin, with Benjamin Balter.

We suggest you update to 3.1.2 promptly, especially if you allow users to register as contributors or if you have untrusted users. This release also fixes a few bugs that missed the boat for version 3.1.1.

Download 3.1.2 or update WordPress automatically from the Dashboard → Updates menu in your blog’s admin control panel.

Nice to see they are not taking as long releasing the security patches as they were with 3.0

Does this one patch any major security vulnerabilities?

      1. Dean Saliba says:

From what I can see it fixes one major security problem, it stops people without the proper permissions publishing posts on your blog.

    1. Paritosh says:

You need not ‘check’ for a update everytime. WordPress pushes these updates and whenever such updates are available, the dashboards shows it at the top, highlighted.

If anyone is still reading this far down in the comments…..
Has anyone ever had a major failure due to a WordPress update? As in, caused site to partially or completely malfunction, caused data loss, etc.

I am wondering how risky it is to apply a new update. In the I.T. world, installing newly released updates on production (as in live or not a test/lab environment) systems is very risky. So I’m cautious when it comes to installing brand new WP updates.
