WordPress 3.1 Available for Download

The long-awaited fourteenth release of WordPress is now available. WordPress 3.1 “Reinhardt” is named in honor of the jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Version 3.1 is available for download, or you can auto update from within your WP dashboard if you have a webhost (like HostGator) that supports that feature.

Some of the new features of WordPress 3.1 include a lightning fast redesigned linking workflow which makes it easy to link to your existing posts and pages, an admin bar so you’re never more than a click away from your most-used dashboard pages, a streamlined writing interface that hides many of the seldom-used panels and a refreshed blue admin scheme available for selection under your personal options.

There’s a bucket of candy for developers as well, including our new Post Formats support which makes it easy for themes to create portable tumblelogs with different styling for different types of posts, new CMS capabilities like archive pages for custom content types, a new Network Admin, an overhaul of the import and export system, and the ability to perform advanced taxonomy and custom fields queries.

With the 3.1 release, WordPress is more of a CMS than ever before. Go get it now and then upgrade again when the 3.1.1 security update gets released in a week. 🙂

  1. Besides updating WP, I loaded a WP Backup Plugin called Automatic WordPress Backup v2.02 which links directly to my Amazon S3 account and backs up my entire blog. The plugin may be a bit buggy if you happen to be using the Redirection plugin, try disabling logging and purging the logs.

You should try restoring from a backup to see if it is the latest. I’ve used automatic and it was hit and miss. Somedays it would make a backup, other days not. It also tried to install a link into my footer.

      1. Thanks for the advice. I will try to restore from a backup to see if it’s working. I thought I had seen a link on my footer but I was not able to click on the icon. It’s a smiley face. I had hoped to utilize a free plugin but may need to look at Vaultpress.com per your recommendation. BTW, it’s snowing today.

Try iDrive buddy.. It’s the best I have used so far.

          1. Thanks for the suggestion. I will check into it.

  2. Hey John.

Thanks for the info on WordPress update. Is it only their 14th release? It seems like every month there’s an update. That is both good and bad I suppose. I know that many people don’t like the fact that they have to constantly update. I guess that the different the plugin makers asren’t too thrilled with it either. On the other hand the improved functionality is a huge plus.

    1. Abhik says:

Yes, It’s the 14th release of major versions.. (If you count the branch releases, it’ll be more than 50 I guess)

      1. boy you are keepin a close eye on wordpress releases Abhik.

        1. 🙂 hes maybe writing archive for wordpress :))

    2. Another release? Maybe we should wait for 3.11 so as to miss the bus in this latest one?

      1. PPC Ian says:

At the current rate, 3.11 will be out in no time! I can’t complain however. wordPress is a truly amazing platform that has transformed the Internet, all for free. Amazing stuff! 🙂

        1. Ian,

They do have services that they charge for too, like Vaultpress, so while it is to be appreciated that they provide an incredible free service they do accept money happily as well.

      2. wait for few days and you will be able to see new updates as well.

  3. Clay Burt says:

WordPress in general is great and I appreciate the simple process to upgrade so to me it isn’t an issue to upgrade blogs. Nice new features.

It doesn’t specifically say it, but we ALWAYS make a backup before upgrading, right? Especially to a new 3.x numbered version…

@Matt, I’ve been looking for a good automated backup plugin as well, but haven’t found the perfect one yet. Anyone else have a suggestion?

    1. John Chow says:

If you’re willing to pay, Vaultpress.com is what I use. It’d made by WordPress.

      1. Clay Burt says:

Thanks, I found your post and I’ll check it out.

      2. Gyanguru says:

Vaultpress, never heard of it before but the video on site looks promising…

  4. Dino Vedo says:

Seems like every day i need to update!! ughh

    1. PPC Ian says:

I know! Too many updates as of late for my taste. 🙂

      1. I know of at least one person that actually stopped using the WP platform just because of the constant need for updates. That’s going to extremes but I’ve read about people not being happy about it on several blogs over the past year or so.

  5. Just uploaded the newest version. The biggest thing I see is the browser tool bar. That is way cool.

  6. After a long time WordPress is back on track with new features! The admin bar is a fantastic Idea! helps us in managing the widgets and comments in real time!

  7. Abhik says:

John, my MBP Strip Ads ain’t showing with the new Admin Bar (Of course when I am logged in)..
Is it the same with you?

  8. Gyanguru says:

Oh, another update from wordpress, but still I am loving it..

  9. Ashish Patel says:

godaddy automatically updates my wordpress… Pretty awesome 🙂

    1. What? You don’t have to set that up to happen. I wouldn’t want that to automatically update because there can be plug in issues sometimes.

      1. I wouldn’t want automatic updates either. Because of plugins but also because I like to know what the update is about first.

  10. I get the latest wordpress directly from my server.

    1. Abhik says:

Yes, that the easiest option, automatic update.
But, before you do so, don’t forget to take a backup.

      1. PPC Ian says:

I agree. I’m careful to make complete backups before upgrading. I’m also looking at VaultPress to make this even easier.

        1. yes backup your files are important thing now a days.

But however sometime people do not care about it click on auto update button.

  11. Roger says:

John, Thanks for sharing this. The new features WordPress has to offer are great. Especially, being able to link to older blog posts with simplicity. Anyone that wants a truly great content platform should go with WordPress.

    1. quite agree with you.

They are making it more and more user friendly.

  12. Mightee says:

updated to 3.1 yesterday and today i got a mail from guys at theme junkie that their themes have problems with 3.1 🙁
but still i love the colour combinations in the new update 😉

  13. Chris says:

I’m loving the new admin bar. Handy stuff! Using Automatic Backup (like many of you) – may have to be checking out Vaultpress soon. Hey John – How’s Hawaii treating you? It’s 20 degrees here in NY!

    1. he is having blasts and I am sure in coming days we will be able to see more awesome videos and photos,

  14. The thing with updates is that it never fails to have some kind of bugs in it that sometimes can mess up one’s blog. For those who have updated, please tell us more beyond the dashboard interface. for instance, are your images within the comment section still showing up? The 3.0.5 update killed the images.

    1. if you are concerned so much than you should wait for a while.

I am sure they will come with another update soon.

  15. fas says:

The new wordpress has a good feature on the site, specially the quick edit link on the homepage.

  16. Allen Walker says:

WordPress 3.1 sounds really neat. 😀

I wasn’t planning on upgrading yet, but the lightning fast internal linking sounds really cool. 😀

I’ll give it a try later on.

    Cheers,
    Allen
