Your Fur Is Nice And Blue

Some may recall my post about Monster Hosting changing their name to because of some big US company threatening trademark infringement. Well the name change is almost done and BlueFur would love to hear what everyone thinks of their new domain name.

Inspired by my review for linkback idea, they’ve decided to offer a “Review Our New Name & Get A Free Domain” contest. The rules are pretty simple.

The rules are simple, review our new domain and you will get a free .com, .net or .org to use how you wish. The review must be at least 300 words long and it must include a link to the home page and this post. We ask that you are honest with your review and state what you like and do not like. This offer is only open to the first 50 people.

This sounds like a pretty easy way to get a free domain name. Mind you, it’s just for a domain name, you’ll still have to pay for hosting. However, with plans starting at $4.95 per month, it’s pretty cheap. And if you enter JohnChowRocks in the promo code, you’ll get 15% off. Since I’m already writing, I guess I’ll take a shot at reviewing BlueFur. gets its domain name from its logo – a nice blue guy with blue fur. As you can see from the logo, it’s pretty blue and has a lot of fur. Even the letters are a furry blue. However, I’m not too sure about the “Experience The Legend” line. Maybe they should try something like “Feeling Blue? Try Our Fur.” That would keep with the whole BlueFur thing. πŸ™‚

OK, that was a pretty bad review! I’m sure you guys can do much better! If you’re thinking of starting a new site or blog, here’s your chance to get the domain name for free! Get on it quick however. After 50 reviews, the contest is over.

I have recommended quite a few friends to BlueFur and so far their experiences have been all positive. Ed Lau is a BlueFur customer and he was very impressed that his $4.95 per month hosting package was able to stand up to a front page Digg. Not many shared hosting plans can do that.

Blue Fur? That is an interesting name, I’ll have to write up a 300 word review and get a free domain name now for sure!

  2. Jane May says:

Yeah, that tag line has got to go. It might have been going for that sasquatch reference in using that β€œExperience The Legend” line. But I didn’t realize they were blue if that is what they were going for.

    1. I agree, i find it silly.

  3. Kenny says:

After reading about BlueFur on here I actually signed through them to host my blog. So far everything has been perfect for my little start-up blog.

I like the name, its easily brandable and unique so people will remember the name. However, for some weird reason I still keep typing in

Maybe I’ll post a review, if I’m not one of the first 50 I wont lose any sleep.

    1. Jane May says:

Well now that John’s written about it, I can see them already have 50 people by now. Not to discourage anyone from doing so, but that’s the power of John Chow dot com. πŸ™‚

      1. Alex Becker says:

        Yes thats probably true.

      2. Marc says:

        I wouldn’t be surprised at all… John’s a popular fellow πŸ™‚

        1. Jeff says:

I just posted mine and I got in the 50. There aren’t that many still.. you can see it on the blog on There’s still a chance.

          1. Leftblank says:

I got in as well yesterday evening, I suppose they’re pretty full now, lovely deal πŸ˜‰

      3. Raghu CS says:

        Definitely it would be true…

    2. Nomar says:

bluefir heh ?? maybe a good typo πŸ™‚ hehe

  4. Nate W. says:

Gary at Bluefur is a nice guy. I will definitely consider Bluefur next time I am looking for hosting.

    1. Jeff says:

Ya i was introduced to the company by meeting Gary.

  5. Alex Becker says:

If I ever decide to move from my free blog I will give BlueFur a try. Sound like a good deal.

  6. I think you’re right about the slogan “Experience the legend” John.. doesn’t seem to work.

    1. Yeah, I don’t understand how ‘Experience the Legend’ relates to blue fur. I’m lost.

  7. OZaC says:

John, I think you have unintentionally come up with one of the most enticing headlines that I have read in a long time. “Your Fur Is Nice And Blue” came up in my feed reader, and I thought “huh? wtf?”. There was no way I could not read!

    1. Michael Kwan says:

John is great with his titles, isn’t he? Evil genius, indeed.

  8. Nomar says:

I am not going to do a review, but I like the name alot. It stands out. And it is a name that you will remember, even after a week.

it has a nice sound, and it sounds good

  9. I would have done a review but the im Sure the John Chow effect has taken over and they have over a 100 people writing reviews write now.

Plus my blog is still too new for me to start making reviews.

  10. Allen.H says:

What entices me the most about doing this is that John said they were able to handle the digg effect, something very few hosts can do. I’ve been very dissatisfied with Dreamhost so this may be my next stop.

    1. Jane May says:

I just switched to Dreamhost and I also am not impressed! The worst thing about it is that we left a host that gave us a great stat layout and thought Dreamhost would be great, especially because of the growing bandwith and space you get with them. Beginning to think it was a bad idea.

  11. Rainer says:

BlueFur is a great name, experience the legend is a great tag line. had a legendary presence and BlueFur will continue this. Yes he is my best friend but I would knock it if it wasn’t a good marketing idea for his company. Friends do that all the time, Gary does it all the time to me, the jurk, lol.

Just so you know, there is still room to review, have at er.

    1. Michael Kwan says:

I don’t like Experience the Legend. It doesn’t fit with the fun/quirky “BlueFur” moniker.

  12. Alex Becker says:

What’s the big deal about the slogan. I think its clever. Plus if they got a good deal going who cares.

    1. Michael Kwan says:

How about “Even if you’re blue, you can still be furry.”

      1. Nate W. says:

That is hilarious. I agree he needs to play more on the “Blue Fur” deal.

      2. Leftblank says:

It’s nice, but still has absolutely nothing to do with webhosting πŸ˜‰

  13. Rainer says:

All the comments about the slogan . . . your missing something . . . pay attention, you’ll get it soon.

  14. ian says:

I hate to be negative here, but I think it is an extremely poor choice of domain name when I first heard it, then again, they may be able to build it into a really good brand, but I just dont like it. The word blue in a domain is good, but “fur” to me just does not have positive connotations when connected to the world of high tech and web hosting. I think if they are serious about their business and their future long term, they should have spent a couple of grand and bought a pre-existing domain with a good brand.

    1. Nomar says:

I like the sound, maybe fur is not a real good second word to choose, but it sounds nice doesnt it?

  15. Rainer says:

I would like to give a review of the individual, Gary, of BlueFur. If that’s alright with you John.

Gary is the most honorable person I have ever met in my life. He cares not only about his clients but he truly cares about the industry. I have had the honor of being his friend for about 5 years now and I can tell you that this man is amazing. I learn from him on a daily basis.

When it comes to hosting, he is never looking for ways to scam people into using his company, he is always looking for reasons for people to WANT to use his hosting company. I have nothing but pure admiration for Gary. You are welcome to email me about Gary at any time.

Thanks John for letting me say this about Gary.

    1. Jeff says:

      Hey rainer,
yeah I agree he’s a good guy and i know that from first hand accounts. Which is why I sent… at least.. 5 clients that way so far? And I got 2 more on their way!!!

  16. Marc says:

John Chow, an industry trend setter πŸ™‚ I love the promo idea.

    1. Nate W. says:

John Chow is slowly, but surely, changing the world.

For all of you out there who haven’t done this yet : There’s still room left for the first 50!!

I just got mine done at my blog, detailed with screenshots and all. Click my name and you’ll see my site.

    1. very nice thanks jeff.

  19. Serguei says:

Doesn’t the new logo look like another “brand” – a main character from famous Academy Award-winning cartoon “Monsters Inc”?

    He’s not afraid of lawsuits…

    1. Jane May says:

I was actually thinking the same thing. There may be some legality involved, but I’m sure they wouldn’t have pursued anything without legal advice.

  20. Raghu CS says:

Hey John your next review has not been posted in a while now ?

  21. Chris says:

I have been disappointed with BlueFur so far. Their support has been unresponsive in help with my initial account, deflecting all their responses to their Billing department, who, conveniently is currently closed. I wouldn’t recommend them right now, and tried them because of your review. πŸ™ and no, this domain isn’t one that I’m hosting with them.

    1. Gary Jones says:

I was informed of your post on the blog by a friend and I am sorry that you are disappointed with our service. It appears your account detail were sent earlier today by our staff. Due to the content of that email it sometimes gets caught up as spam by some providers.

I checked with our support staff and your issue was responded to in less then 5 minutes of your ticket where they explained how to have your welcome email resent.

I have also checked with billing just now and they have resent your welcome details.

If you have any issues in future I would appreciate it if you contact me directly.

I hope that we can work together to make your experience a good one with

      1. Chris says:

        Hi Gary,

Thanks so much for the reply. At times, I felt like I was hitting my head against the wall with your support group. Their answers were less than useful.

Thankfully, your Billing group has gotten in contact and explained to me the regulatory guidelines you have to follow, and why my request was handled in the way it was. Everything has been resolved, and I look forward to working with you guys in the future.

        1. Gary Jones says:

Thank you for the valuable input on our supports response to your issue. I will discuss it with them and how they could improve on future similar issues.
