Welcome to part 13 of my link building series.
We have been coving a lot of awesome ground and today, we’ll be looking at how to leverage broken wiki links to build high authority backlinks. The setup is easy, but you need to find the right links on the right pages to build high authority backlinks. For those of you not aware, here’s a quick breakdown of how this strategy works.
First, you’ll head over to Wikipedia.com and type in a quick search using your “targeted†keyword. Next, you skim through, looking for dead-links. These external links are on the page and point to other relevant resources. However, because Wikipedia.com is so big, and has enormous amounts of information, it’s hard to keep pages up to date and they rely on people like us to replace broken links. There are two ways we’ll discuss later on how you can locate dead-links. The methods are very simple and all you have to do is create a FREE account on Wikipedia.com and replace the link.
Strategy #13 – Utilizing Wiki Links
Step 1 –
You have to make sure your link will end up on the right page. You cannot go around putting irrelevant links on pages that have nothing to do with your content. All links are moderated and building irrelevant backlinks will get you banned. Once you’re banned, you’ve just lost an awesome link building strategy. I’ve used Wiki around 3-4 times and even though the links are considered no-follow, they will still add value to your website. Remember, millions of people visit Wikipedia.com each day and this can drive enormous relevant traffic to your blog. This increased engagement and may even lead to external links from relevant sites.
Start by doing a quick search in Wikipedia for your target keyword. For example, for my blog, which is based on link building, I’ll perform searches using the following: SEO, link building, content marketing, etc.
Step 2 –
When the search results open, you’ll be taken to a page relevant to your search. Skim through the page to get a good idea of the content. Next, you should install broken link checker for Firefox or Chrome. This tool will go through all the links on the page, highlighting the ones that are broken. You should make a note of all the pages that have dead links because you can edit the links, pointing them to your website. I’ve found that Wikipedia.com has several dead-links because of the vast amounts of information available. I usually skim through several relevant pages and write down the URL so I can go back to edit them later.
Next,
You can also use wikigrabber.com to find dead-links within Wikipedia.com. This tool will provide a list of dead links based on your search query. It’s a very simple tool to use and it’s free. You need to search using your target word and it will generate the URL of the pages either requiring a citation or have broken links.
Step 3 –
Creating an account on Wikipedia.com is FREE and I recommend all of you to setup an account. When you create an account, you’ll be able to edit the page and you can now replace the dead-link with your relevant URL. I recommend you to always link to valuable content so that the edit is approved. As you build a reputation for providing valuable links, it’ll become much easier for you to be approved going forward. It’s important to note that all edits are moderated so don’t think you can add an irrelevant link without being penalized. Once your account is banned, you’ve just lost a valuable traffic and link building source. Here’s what I recommend,
Look at some of the other links that are on the page. Check their content and then evaluate your content, making sure you meet the standards. If the other externals links have been approved and your content meets their standards, then you’ll have no problem getting your edits approved.
