When I meet new people for the first time and I tell them what I do for a living, I oftentimes get some variation of the same fundamental response. Oh, I wish I could work from home like you. Oh, I wish I could be my own boss and run my own business. Oh, I wish I could make my living on the Internet. Oh, I wish I had the freedom to spend more time with my family.
Then, why don’t you? Why don’t you do these things? Why don’t you do something about it?
People come up with a litany of excuses, some more valid than others, about why they haven’t gone into business for themselves. They can’t afford to take the risk, they’ll say. They don’t know how to get started, they’ll say. They don’t know what they’re doing, they’ll say. But if you really wished you could enjoy the freedom that the “dot com lifestyle” can afford you, then you’d be far more willing to overcome these obstacles.
Is it true that anyone, literally anyone, can make money online and earn a comfortable living doing it? Let’s take a look at a few key factors.
Training and Certification
If you want to be an accountant, you have to go through years of school. Then, you need to get yourself an internship at an accounting firm to build up your work experience. Then, you have to pass a series of exams. At the end of it, you are given a piece of paper and the privilege of calling yourself an accountant.
A similar kind of process is involved with a myriad of other careers, whether you want to be a registered nurse, a big rig truck driver, or an architect. They all require some form of education, training and certification. Making money online is entirely different.
Some people might argue that having a business or marketing background can prove beneficial, whereas other people might say that the formal education could actually be detrimental to your potential for success. That’s up to you to decide, but the fact of the matter is that you don’t need any formal education to be an online entrepreneur.
Experience and Experimentation
Instead of a formal program of education and training, the best way you can learn about how to make money online (and be successful at it) is just to do it. You’ll probably fail the first couple of attempts and that’s okay. The road to success is paved with many failures, each providing a valuable learning opportunity.
To make money online, you’ll want to build up that experience. You’ll want to experiment with different ways to do it. Maybe you find more success writing and selling e-books. Maybe you’re better as an affiliate marketer. Maybe you’re better suited for arbitrage. You won’t know until you try and the beauty of making money online is that anyone can try.
A Winner’s Mindset
So, going all the way back to the question that is the title to this blog post, can anyone make money online? The short answer is yes… just like how anyone can be a professional basketball player, a brain surgeon or an astrophysicist. These are all possible, but it takes a special kind of individual to be successful in any of these.
Making money online is no exception, except the barriers to entry are far lower. You don’t need the youth and athleticism of the professional athlete. You don’t need the massive intellect of the scientist or the years of formal training of the medical doctor. You just have to go in with the winner’s mindset, willing to try new things, and prepared to throw caution to the wind with the prospect of striking it rich.
The Internet really does level the playing field, regardless of geographic location or pre-existing wealth.
