I just wanted to show you a case study of two freelance job sites.
Both of them are very popular, and have served a lot of customers across the world. But does it really matter how many people you’re reaching and selling to, the question to ask is this:
Is my VALUE clear enough?
This post isn’t the typical post so I’m going to use screenshots to deliver my point (message). Permit me to use you as a potential customer who wants to hire a freelancer to handle your work. Or perhaps, you’re a contractor looking to get hired so you can make money serving clients from all over the world.
Which of these two freelance job sites would you go for, considering the clarity of their VALUE?
Case 1: Freelancer.com
“Ready To Launchâ€
Does that speak volumes? If I hadn’t read about this site and the benefits of Freelancer.com, when I arrived here, I would be lost.
At first glance, I couldn’t figure out what that “message†really stood for. “Ready To Launchâ€, is it referring to launching a new product or a book launch?
To a newbie, this 3-word phrase would breed confusion and prevent you from selling your product like a pro.
Professionals understand the power behind words, which is why copywriters can charge thousands of dollars to write your copy. They can use words to capture your target audience, persuade them to read the first line and further close the deal.
The message (VALUE) you’ve for your blog readers/prospects, make it clearer and don’t use vague phrases that means nothing.
I’m not saying that Freelancer isn’t succeeding with their site, but they would sell more if they can make that single line a bit clearer and straight to the point.
Now, let’s look at another site.
Case 2: oDesk.com
“Get More Done…
With the help of a freelancerâ€
First, can you tell off the bat what oDesk does? I know you can do that because it’s well spelt out in their message. They help you achieve more, in terms of being productive, by outsourcing tasks to freelancers who are skilled in their various fields.
Second, take a good look at the guy and the lady all looking happy and satisfied. The guy is having a cup of (maybe coffee or Tea) on his desk while the lady is smiling. I guess she’s a freelancer while the cool guy is the client client. They both look happy and you can tell from their body expressions.
Now below the message, you get even more “clarityâ€, which further prompts the freelancer and client to take action. It says, “Welcome to the world’s largest online workplace, where 1+ million companies hire freelancers to get the job done.â€
What’s In It For You?
No matter the kind of business model you’re in, you have to speak a language potential customers can understand. Your blog/website is not a place to show how vast you’re with English Grammar and Words.
You can’t solve people’s problem by using vague phrases. In fact, you’ll be worsening their challenges and make a mockery of your chosen field.
If you’re a freelance writer, when you meet clients for the first time don’t tell them you’re a professional writer.
Instead, tell them you can write valuable content to help grow their business. If you’re a SEO expert, don’t hone your skills by telling clients to hire you for SEO work. You’ll fail and never win that client. Start by identifying their problems and then proffer your own solution in a subtle manner. For example:
Have you tried to rank your website pages in Google homepage and failed? I can help you pick the right keywords, structure your content and drive your rankings to the top – I help clients with their SEO needs.Â

How clear is the above message?
As usual, what is your message? When I come to your blog today, what exactly would motivate me to subscribe to your email list and buy your product?
If you can deliver your core message just as oDesk did, you’ll definitely sell more products and make more money online. And it gets even sweeter; you become the go-to expert in your niche, too. See you at the top!
