Custom Logos and Icons with Free Online Tool

Branding is very important. This is true of everything from a blog to a brick-and-mortar business. And a big part of branding comes from having your own unique logo. You could hire a freelance graphic designer to create a logo for you, but this can prove costly. There has to be a cheaper alternative.

And that’s what leads us to today’s review. We’re taking a look at Online Logo Maker, a “free professional logo design tool” for everyone. The interface is reasonably simple, yet the features are remarkably robust for what you get. Do you want a free custom logo? Let’s see how it works.

Making Logos For Free Online

Even people who are more technologically savvy can struggle to truly understand more complex programs like Photoshop and Illustrator. More still, these programs can be very expensive and they require a local installation on your computer.

Two of the big differences with this logo creator is that it is free and that it is completely online. This means that you don’t have to outlay a large sum of money for the software and it also means that you can access the tool anywhere you can get onto the Internet.

This isn’t necessarily a replacement for hiring a professional, per se, but it is a great alternative for people on tighter budgets who still want to exercise a great deal of control over branding.

Choose From Several Symbols, Colors and Fonts

After going to the main page for Online Logo Maker, you’ll see a very obvious button where you can launch right into the logo creation tool.

Packaged in with this online software are a variety of tools you can use to create your custom logo. In addition to a range of different fonts, you’ll also find a substantial library of symbols that you can mix, remix, and rearrange to suit your needs. Shown above is just a small sample from this library. By combining and re-arranging them, you can really make your logo your own.

There is also the option of uploading images from your own library to supplement these symbols. This will be important if you already have a certain style, logo, or symbol that you would like to include in the new art design.

The Creation Tool and the Final Product

In regards to the creation tool itself, I found it quite easy to use and understand. Unlike PhotoShop where you need to switch layers before being able to manipulate that layer, the Online Logo Maker lets you click on the object itself and make changes as needed.

I used the free logo making tool to mock up a new logo for Dot Com Pho, just to see what was possible. So, in this case, I stacked one symbol (the one with the three people) on top of another symbol (the bowl of rice… since I couldn’t find a bowl of noodles). I then changed the colors for some of the individual segments by simply clicking on that area then selecting the color from the selector in the lower-right. Finally, I added the text, changed the font, and put on a texture as the color.

This was all very easy to use and, when you consider importing some of your own custom art, you can see how it can be very easy to make a unique logo. Even changing the font size didn’t mean choosing a specific font pitch; you simply dragged the anchors that appeared around the text box. One caveat is that the file can only be saved as a PNG at the moment and this isn’t immediately obvious from the “save” screen.

The Accompanying Free Tool for Making Icons

Going along with the logo creation tool is a free icon maker that works in much the same way.

This utility is much more limited, though, as you only select the colors, the text, the font, and the shadow. It does the job, but it doesn’t allow nearly as much for customization.

PhotoShop and Illustrator for Dummies?

Both the Online Logo Maker and the Online Icon Maker are fairly simple to use and the price is certainly right. You will need to take some time to fiddle around with the available options, but this much more novice-friendly than a fuller program suite like Illustrator and Photoshop. At the same time, this is much more purpose-built than a program like MS Paint. You don’t want to make your logo in Paint.
